Patrick Dempsey says his ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ return honors frontline workers ‘who are out there taking care of us’ amid COVID-19 – Yahoo Entertainment

In a time of uncertainty, its nice to see a familiar face, even if its when you turn on the TV and Patrick Dempsey has been just that to many.

The actors surprise guest return to Greys Anatomy was a spectacular treat for viewers who, during his original 11-season run, felt a sense of calm looking in Dr. Derek Shepherds reassuring eyes. And that is just one of many projects he has going on during this unpredictable time.

First things first, yes, there will be more McGhost to come when the ABC medical drama returns March 4 with Dempsey telling Yahoo Entertainment, Theres definitely more to air, with two of his four episodes airing so far, but Im done with my part of the shooting, the production side.

Asked if hes happy with how it turned out, he says he accomplished what he set out to do when he agreed to return, which has reunited his late character, who had been killed off in 2015, with his COVID-19 stricken wife Dr. Meredith Grey (played by Ellen Pompeo).

You know what Im really happy about, and we have to constantly remember, is all of the men and women who are in the hospitals and the responders are going through a hell of a journey right now, says Dempsey as the countrys COVID-19 cases soar, especially in California and its Los Angeles County, where Greys shoots. We need to remember their sacrifice and their commitment and keep that in mind. I think that was the intention moving forward. How can we honor the people who are out there taking care of us and our family members? That was the good intention that brought us back with that messaging. I think thats important. Wear your mask and be careful out there. Take care of each other.

Dempsey has been acting in Hollywood since he was a teen, but its an unprecedented time working with all the COVID protocols. When we talk, hes just arrived on the East Coast from California and is quarantining ahead of shooting the CBS political drama pilot Ways & Means.

Story continues

His 55th birthday was Jan. 13 and he had no plans, explaining, Im sort of in isolation for the next few days in order to be safe to go back to work. So I will use that time to reflect and to be grateful and assess all the things I have to be grateful for. Though he adds, I dont particularly like getting any older, with a laugh. It is what it is.

Ways & Means comes at an especially interesting time with Washington, D.C., and U.S. politics in chaos. He plays a disillusioned congressional leader who forms a secret alliance with a congresswoman from the opposing party, played by Pretty Little Liarss Troian Bellisario, in hopes of saving U.S. politics.

Yeah, theres a lot of volatility in the world and a great opportunity for us, he says of the role. Things are changing so quickly were having to adapt. So we are in pre-production at the moment and trying to stay ahead of all the events and well see what we come up with. Its exciting certainly and scary at the same time.

When hes done with the pilot, hes off to Rome in February to make Season 2 of Devils, an Italian drama about the finance world, which was acquired by The CW and aired in the fall. Theres also talk of possibly fitting Enchanted 2 in this year, he says of the Disney flick that paired him with Amy Adams in the original. He already has the script for the sequel, to be called Disenchanted, which is looking at shooting in the spring.

Theres a lot of work. Im very grateful for that, Dempsey says.

A side project amid all this is being the new face of Poland Springs Origin line. The longtime New England spring water brand, now going national with the line that boasts bottles made from 100 percent recycled plastic, is known for being born in Maine and so was Dempsey. He happily returned to his home state, where he owns a home and his Dempsey Center, the non-profit that assists in treating cancer patients, is based, to shoot the commercial in mid-November. It sees him in his natural element amid the green and gorgeous pines.

Dempsey says he goes back to the state once a month usually anyway for the work with the center. So I spend a lot of time [there] and I appreciate it. The older I get, the more and more I appreciate the great state of Maine. So making the commercial there was a treat, even though it wasnt necessarily easy due to COVID.

They shot in Northern Maine and despite a wind chill factor of 17 degrees and it starting to snow, It was nice to be outside, he says. A lot of people had been cooped up in the city and they got a chance to be outside to work. For them, it was really quite inspiring. At the same time, its been very challenging because you are having to commit to the procedures. So having a mask on, a face screen. Its incredibly challenging for the crew and the actors are vulnerable without a mask or any of that on. It takes a lot longer to do things. Its a lot harder to do things. But at the same time were finding ways to move forward in a safe way for the crew and for the actors.

As for how his own family he and his makeup artist wife Jillian Dempsey are parents to daughter Talula, 18, and twin sons Darby and Sullivan, 13 has been navigating this time, he says not that different than everyone else.

Like every family, I think people are struggling with Zoom school and dealing with that, he says. Its [supposed to be] a social period for teenagers and thats part of their development. Its my daughters first year in college. Everyone is struggling and trying to do the best they can and hopefully going into this new year well have better leadership going forward.

In Vitro Assessment of Right Ventricular Outflow Tract Anatomy and Valve Orientation Effects on Bioprosthetic Pulmonary Valve Hemodynamics – DocWire…

This article was originally published here

Cardiovasc Eng Technol. 2021 Jan 15. doi: 10.1007/s13239-020-00507-6. Online ahead of print.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: The congenital heart defect Tetralogy of Fallot (ToF) affects 1 in 2500 newborns annually in the US and typically requires surgical repair of the right ventricular outflow tract (RVOT) early in life, with variations in surgical technique leading to large disparities in RVOT anatomy among patients. Subsequently, often in adolescence or early adulthood, patients usually require surgical placement of a xenograft or allograft pulmonary valve prosthesis. Valve longevity is highly variable for reasons that remain poorly understood.

METHODS: This work aims to assess the performance of bioprosthetic pulmonary valves in vitro using two 3D printed geometries: an idealized case based on healthy subjects aged 11 to 13 years and a diseased case with a 150% dilation in vessel diameter downstream of the valve. Each geometry was studied with two valve orientations: one with a valve leaflet opening posterior, which is the native pulmonary valve position, and one with a valve leaflet opening anterior.

RESULTS: Full three-dimensional, three-component, phase-averaged velocity fields were obtained in the physiological models using 4D flow MRI. Flow features, particularly vortex formation and reversed flow regions, differed significantly between the RVOT geometries and valve orientations. Pronounced asymmetry in streamwise velocity was present in all cases, while the diseased geometry produced additional asymmetry in radial flows. Quantitative integral metrics demonstrated increased secondary flow strength and recirculation in the rotated orientation for the diseased geometry.

CONCLUSIONS: The compound effects of geometry and orientation on bioprosthetic valve hemodynamics illustrated in this study could have a crucial impact on long-term valve performance.

‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Season 17: Are Owen and Teddy Still Together? Kevin McKidd and Kim Raver Still Have Hope for the Relationship – Showbiz Cheat Sheet

Greys Anatomy Season 17 just went on winter hiatus, and fans cant stop thinking about Owen Hunt (Kevin McKidd) and Teddy Altmans (Kim Raver) rollercoaster romance. After Owen found out about the affair with Tom Koracick (Greg Germann), Teddy revealed why she really named their daughter Allison. Now, it looks like Owen has had enough. But even so, both McKidd and Raver still think theres hope for the relationship heres why.

RELATED: Greys Anatomy Season 17: Patrick Dempsey Promises Derek Shepherd Will Return in 2021

In the Greys Anatomy Season 16 finale, Owen caught Teddy sleeping with Tom ahead of their wedding. The cheating couple accidentally left Owen a voicemail of their hookup. Nevertheless, Teddy made it clear to Tom she was still choosing Owen.

Finally, Owen confronted Teddy about the affair in Greys Anatomy Season 17. Then in the last episode of the year, Richard Webber (James Picken Jr.) told Teddy what she needed to hear so she wouldnt continue making the same mistakes. So she opened up to Owen about her relationship with Allison Robin Brown (Sherri Saum), revealing she was in love with her best friend.

While Teddy delved into her past, she was unable to understand why Allison was connected to her relationship with Owen. So the conversation left Owen and viewers a little confused and frustrated.

Ever since our wedding day, I tried to piece it together. Our history, searching for when you changed and became someone that was capable of doing things that I couldnt understand, Owen told Teddy. It turns out that you didnt change. Turns out I just never really knew you.

While Owen stormed out of his conversation with Teddy in Greys Anatomy Season 17 Episode 6, McKidd still believes the relationship can be mended. When speaking with Seth Rudetsky and James Wesley on the Jan. 14 episode of Stars In The House, the hosts asked whether he still had hope for the couple moving forward. Then McKidd responded, Yeah, I do.

Teddy and Owen have been through so much, the actor continued. And listen, Owen has not been a saint lets be honest over the years. Look at his track record for a minute. But yeah, Owens really hurt.

That said, McKidd acknowledged that Teddy and Owen will need to work on a few things before moving on. But ultimately, he thinks the two surgeons can make it through this rough patch, considering everything theyve been through in the past.

I think theyre gonna be fine, McKidd said. I mean, I think theres going to be some healing going on, and theres going to be some conversation. But I think Owen and Teddy have been through war together, [so] they can get through this. I hope. But who knows?

For the most part, it seems Raver is on the same page as McKidd. Still speaking with Rudetsky and Wesley on Stars In The House, Raver admitted shes just as upset with Teddy as most Greys Anatomy fans. But she hopes to see her character heal when the Shondaland series returns after the break.

I know she is really messing up right now! I agree. But were human, Raver said. Thats what [creator Shonda Rhimes] has always shown our dark side. And hopefully, we will show her healing!

The actor later added, [Teddys] really stepped into a bad cycle in her life. Whats going to be amazing is how she reaches out to the other people in the hospital for her healing.

No matter what Greys Anatomy Season 17 has in store for Teddy and Owen, at least McKidd and Raver think their characters will be just fine. But in an interview with Entertainment Tonight from December 2020, executive producer Meg Marinis hinted at whats to come and the couples journey will not be easy.

They still have a very messy road ahead of them, Marinis said.

Greys Anatomy Season 17 is expected to return on March 4, 2021.

‘Grey’s Anatomy’: Kim Raver Was So Embarrassed She Asked To ‘Get Under the Table’ During the Table Read in Season 17 – Showbiz Cheat Sheet

WhileGreys Anatomywas on winter break, Kim Raver and the rest of the cast got together for a live reunion onStars in the House. During the live question and answer session, the actor who portrays Teddy admitted she was so embarrassed by her lines in season 17 she asked to get under the table.

Ravers character, Teddy Altman, was cheating on Owen Hunt (Kevin McKidd) onGreys Anatomy. However, she still planned to marry Owen. On the day of her wedding, she had sex with Tom Koracick (Greg Germann) one last time but told him that things were over. Little did she know, her phone recorded the entire thing in a call to Owen, played in the operating room where he was working.

I know the fans are so upset about it, Raver toldStars in the House. Im upset about it too, but its peeling back the onion of who we are.

Although Raver is not happy about the storyline, she knows that healing will come from her mistakes.

I think this is the quintessentialGreys, showing the complexity of human beings, Raver added. Its not perfect people doing perfect things all the time. For me, its that we are flawed. She has stepped into a really bad cycle in her life and whats going to be amazing is how she reaches out to the other people in the hospital for her healing.

Before the actors filmGreys Anatomy, they get together for a table read of the episode. As a seasoned actor, Raver is accustomed to this part of the process. However, there was one moment in season 17 she did not want to read.

At the table read, I was like, can I get under the table? Raver told the outlet. I had to make those noises over and over again.

As if reading the lines, making sex sounds, wasnt mortifying enough, Raver described another moment that was worse.

They have speakers everywhere, she added. They do playback, and they didnt gauge the sound, and there were like 500 of me or of Teddy having that moment.

The actor described it as one of the most embarrassing moments of her career.

During the cast reunion, one fan asked whether or not Teddy and Owen will get back together.

Teddy and Owen have been through so so much, McKidd responded. Owen has not been a saint, so people in glass houses, ya know. Owen is really hurt, and I think they are going to be fine. I think there is going to be some healing going on.

Greys Anatomyfans have followed Teddy and Owens story since season 5, and they know how much the best friends have been through.

They have been through war together, so they can get through this, McKidd added.

‘Grey’s Anatomy’: Arizona Robbins Had a Prosthetic Leg for 141 Episodes, but Jessica Capshaw Only Wore It 1 Time – Showbiz Cheat Sheet

Greys Anatomyfans never forget the horrific plane crash in season 8 that resulted in Lexie Grey (Chyler Leigh) and Mark Sloans (Eric Dane) deaths. Although it didnt happen immediately, Arizona Robbins (Jessica Capshaw) lost her leg because of the accident.

From season 9 through season 14, when Capshaw left the series, Arizona had a prosthetic leg. Oddly enough, the actor only had to wear it one time in the 141 episodes that her character had it on.

After the plane crash in season 8,Arizonadeveloped a life-threatening infection in her leg. She was adamantly against the surgeons amputating her leg. However, when her condition worsened, Callie had to choose between saving Arizonas life or cutting off her leg. After surgery, it took Arizona a very long time to come to terms with the loss of her leg.

In season 9, episode 4, she finally agreed to go to the hospital to get fitted for a prosthetic leg. TheGreys Anatomyteam hiredA Step Ahead Prostheticsto create the realistic-looking, high-heeled transfemoral prosthesis for Arizona.

The medical lab designed and built a special prop leg with a harness for a non-amputee. It was built from a cast of Capshaws upper thigh, and the technicians used real prosthetic components to make it. The prop was covered with a silicone skin color matching Capshaws skin tones. Although the doctor fits Arizona for the leg in episode 4, she did not use the specialized prop until episode 18.

In a recentGreys Anatomyreunion on Stars in the House, Capshaw made a guest appearance. The hosts asked her the same question that many fans have asked, What was it like filming with a prosthetic leg? Her response was surprising.

So, this was a common question, Capshaw began. What was confusing was that I wasnt actually filming with a prosthetic. We only shot with a prosthetic when we shot Arizona without her pants on. I didnt film with a prosthetic very much.

RELATED: Greys Anatomy: A Calzona Reunion Is Now More Possible Than Ever BeforeWhat Is Callie (Sara Ramirez) up to Since Leaving?

Throughout the six seasons, there were only a handful of times where fans saw Capshaws prosthetic leg. Most of the time, she wasnt wearing it.

It was a green screen, she added. It was a lot of CGI. I filmed with a prosthetic once. I tied my leg behind my back and then tied a prosthetic leg on.

During the reunion show, Camilla Luddington discussed the future storyline of her character, Jo Wilson. The surgeon is thinking about switching fields into pediatrics.

Its already been teased, Luddington told the panel. But shes thinking about changing to being an OB. So thats going to be a pretty big storyline for her. Im ready for my pink scrubs. And maybe Capshaw can come back.

Youre never ready for the pink scrubs! Capshaw replied.

The actor didnt indicate whether she would come back to the show, but fans hoped she does. It would be the perfect storyline for her to make a guest appearance.

Greys AnatomySeason 17 returns on March 4, 2021, at 9 p.m. EST.

Breaking down anatomy of agitation in farmers’ protest – The New Indian Express

There is no issue in todays India more compelling and distressing than the ongoing farmers agitation in the national capital. Despite several round of talks, the issue remains unresolved. The Supreme Court has now intervened to stay the implementation of the farm laws and constituted a Committee of Experts in an attempt to end the stalemate. The well-intentioned intervention of the Apex Court has added a new dimension to the issue, which may or may not facilitate an acceptable resolution. Any agitation where Government is a party, always presents an unequal power equation.

More so, when the agitation gets prolonged. As days pass, it is human nature for both sides to sharpen their tools and harden their stands. Each side begins to work on relative strengths to browbeat the other. In the instant case, Government has all the instruments of the state to deal with the agitation, while the farmers too have their physical and psychological endurance. Both these will be tested with every passing day.

In any dispute, the primary emotion is that of fear on both sides. The farmers fear that the new farm laws will rob them of their assured support prices and the comfort of the tried and tested arrangement of mandis. Though not a perfect system, they prefer the known imperfections to unknown paradise. Government fears that if it concedes to the farmers and rescinds the laws as demanded, it will send a wrong message that Government could be kowtowed by street protests. Government naturally infers that heeding protests could jeopardise future legislations. As the issue remains unresolved beyond a normal period of a few weeks and now that it has acquired a new dimension created by the Supreme Court, these fears keep on mutating like the corona virus.

Consequently, the perception and strategy also keep changing. With every succeeding day, illusions get entrenched on both sides. Each party assumes that the other would run out of endurance and give up. The farmers rightly assume that the agitation will spread to other parts of the country and then Government will have to concede. Government calculates that the agitators cannot endure for long. Against this already murky background, the agitating farmers perceive the Supreme Court intervention as a favour done to the Government that would eventually reiterate the unacceptable laws, maybe with some cosmetic changes.

However, agitations do not follow any predetermined script. Any delayed agitation becomes a game of diminishing returns for both sides. All long drawn out agitations have been essentially zero sum games as in the case of the miners strike in the UK, or the Railway strike in India, or the prolonged Government employees strike in Kerala and Tamil Nadu. However, there is a stark difference in the present instance as the farmers are not on the payroll of the Government. Their demand is to ensure fair price for their produce and protection from corporate exploitation. The entrenched social cynicism towards salaried class is starkly absent in the case of farmers.

The biggest impediment for the Government to freely negotiate with the farmers, however, lies elsewhere. It is the Citizenship Amendment Act, 2019, and the widespread resistance to it (which, however, seems to have fizzled out with the onset of the pandemic) that is coming in the way of an open dialogue. Government naturally fears that yielding to farmers demands and revoking the three contentious laws will have its ramifications on the CAA agitation.

The two instances are entirely different. The controversial farm laws directly affect the farmers and their income and wellbeing. On the other hand, CAA that discriminates on religious identity evokes intellectual and moral issues. The vulnerabilities likely to be induced by the farm laws are a matter of daily occurrence. Unlike the CAA, these farm laws are supposed to be a welfare measure, arguably to expand farmers opportunities and enhance their income. However, the targeted beneficiary is not convinced; but Government wants to force feed.

There was no imminent economic or social breakdown warranting such laws. Its need and urgency are hard to explain. The more the Government insists on these laws, disowned by the target group, the more the perception of the Government as the promoter and protector of corporate interests get entrenched, which further impedes a convincing dialogue. The door towards a solution will open only when Government is able to mentally un-twin these two legislations.

This in fact is a great opportunity for the Government to enhance its pro-farmer image. Instead of harping on the perceived benefits of the legislation, which the farmers are unable to decode, Government may quietly bury the laws, which the Apex Court has in any case stalled. A democratic Government endears itself only when it demonstrates the capability to respect the genuine sentiments and address the apprehensions of its citizens. And no law is so infallible that it cannot be revisited. Even the Constitution was amended repeatedly.

Now that the Supreme Court has given a window of opportunity, Government should boldly declare that if the farmers are not convinced about these reforms and their benefits, false pride shall not come in the way to repeal these (unwanted) laws. The image managers may seize this opportunity to position Government as the champion of the farmers. At least, the PR potential of such a position should not be missed.

Behavioral convergence in humans and animals – Science Magazine

Over the 20th century, the social sciences developed without taking much notice of humans' nature as products of evolution. In the 1970s this attitude was challenged by behavioral biologists (1, 2) who asserted that general principles concerning the behavior of life forms must also be relevant to understanding human behavior. They argued that because human cognition and emotions had evolved by natural selection, these behavior-generating mechanisms should generally shape behavior so that it maximizes biological fitness. Not all social scientists agreed. Cultural anthropologists, in particular, were mostly aghast at the rigidly scientific and overtly biological nature of this perspective, viewing it as blatantly flawed (3). They claimed that differences between and within human societies were mainly due to variant cultural belief systems. On page 292 of this issue, Barsbai et al. (4) show that adaptation to local ecological conditions is an important determinant of variation in human behavior in traditional societies.
