Majorly indecisive? Welcome to Program II – The Chronicle – Duke Chronicle

Some students come to Duke knowing their major from their first day of classes. Others take years to figure out their path.

And others find that Dukes existing majors dont quite meet their passions, ending up in Program II, Dukes program that lets undergraduates design their own courses of study.

Senior Autumn Blamovilles Program II grew from two passions that seemed too distinct to combine: music and science.

After attending a performing arts high school in New York City before Duke, Blamoville wasnt ready to give up her love of music, but finding time for another major was proving a difficult task.

I knew a lot about music and its effects on the brain with neuroscience, but I had never explored other art forms and how they can work in collaboration with medicine and health care to yield positive health outcomes in older adults, Blamoville said.

While she originally planned to focus her studies on music, her Program II grew to include dance, theater and other forms of art and their intersection with healthcare.

In designing her Program II, Blamoville established a partnership with Sarah Wilber, assistant professor of the practice of dance, who introduced Blamoville to an entire world of working artists in the healthcare system.

Her interests led to her work with TimeSlips, a Milwaukee-based organization that uses creative storytelling to engage with persons living with dementia. Blamoville also worked with Dance for Parkinsons Disease to become a facilitator this past summer.

Blamoville is the vice president of the Program II Majors Union and is working to build community within Program II students despite the wide variety of interests.

Our common interest is that we are all so passionate about what we are doing even though it might not be the exact same thing, she said.

Because of the work required by each Program II student for approval of their topic, Blamoville has observed the deep investment of every student in their project. We are all very determined and want to look past what is in the normal constraints of a major, she said.

One question stuck out among the rest and led junior Rishi Dasgupta to dedicate his academic career at Duke to answering it: What makes us who we are?

To tackle such a big question on the human experience, Dasgupta knew he had to go beyond just one area of study or a traditional major. His Program II curriculum approaches the topic of human consciousness from three angles: biological, philosophical and evolutionary.

If I wanted to ask these kinds of really big questions, I cant just look at one of these things, Dasgupta said.

It was during his sophomore year that Dasgupta designed a course schedule with classes that ranged from neuroscience to philosophy. Under the mentorship of Christine Drea, Earl D. McLean professor of evolutionary anthropology, Dasgupta was able to refine his question into a concrete path of study.

For Dasgupta, Program II allows him to pursue areas of study that he may never get the opportunity to experience after he graduates from Duke. While he hopes to eventually attend medical school and become a physician, Dasgupta wants to take advantage of every minute he has at Duke to pursue his passions.

He also sees his research on human consciousness as being particularly pertinent to one day become a medical provider.

When I think about neurosurgery, youre connecting with another person in the most visceral way possible, he said.

After a summer spent researching at a child abuse evaluation center, junior Carly Jones came back to Duke inspired to design a Program II that addressed the questions she didnt have time to answer in only a few weeks.

She designed a major that analyzes the psychosocial, neurological and genetic bases of childhood trauma and how that trauma is reproduced in communities through victim-offender overlap and increased participation in health risk behavior.

After that summer, I was left with the conclusion that maybe goodness and productivity in society isnt something that is indicative of personal characteristics but gained by privilege: whether you are born into an environment that is loving and nurturing or not, Jones said.

While she initially planned to major in African & African American studies or gender, sexuality and feminist studies, Jones has found an increased freedom through Program II to branch out into other departments like neuroscience and ethics. Jones is mentored by Patrice Douglass, assistant professor of gender, sexuality, and feminist studies, with whom she connected over their shared interests of the intergenerational mobility of harm and trauma.

Jones also took advantage of Dukes interinstitutional agreement with the University of North Carolina at Greensboro last semester. While she has no concrete plans for her senior project yet, Jones is looking forward to returning to a similar environment that began her Program II to apply the knowledge she has gained in the years since.

It took me almost the entire summer to realize the trauma didnt just start with the kids, it started generations before that, Jones said. It helped make me a more empathetic individual, and I want to carry that same empathy and understanding to my future work.

When senior Mac Gagne came to Duke, she knew she wanted to design her own Program II. But as she took classes throughout her first few semesters at Duke, she fell in love with math and declared it as her major her sophomore year.

While she loved the department and working with her professors, Gagne quickly realized her interests fell outside of the major curriculum.

Together, we came up with Program II as a way that I could study the exact area of applied mathematics I had been hoping to study all along: modeling human choice, she said.

With only one semester left at Duke, Gagne said shes excited to tackle her senior project, which focuses on mathematical modeling to improve the efficiency of triage practices in medicine.

By looking at a case study from Hurricane Katrina, Gagne is using math to see if more lives can be saved in emergencies while also taking into account moral and ethical implications, which she feels are too often left out of logic studies.

Understanding decisions, how they should be made, and how they will impact the world around you is like hacking into human potential, Gagne said. A good strategy is everything, and the decision really does make the human.

Without Program II, Gagne feels she could have never tackled her interdisciplinary project.

While her interests have led her to research and internships at places form the National Weather Service to the Duke Lemur Center, Gagne hopes to break down the stereotype that Program II students cant settle on one thing. According to Gagne, Program II students are both generalists and specialists who bridge together a variety of fields to specialize on one particular topic.

Program II students often have a very specific goal of what they want to scholastically contribute to the world around them but must move interdisciplinary mountains to get there, she said.

Anatomy of a game-clinching TD: Aaron Rodgers to Allen Lazard – Packers Wire

The Green Bay Packers had been setting up the knockout blow all game.

With the same calls in the inside zone run game working consistently, and the offenses best blocking receiver executing the same blocking assignment on nearly every run play, the Packers felt they had successfully lulled the Los Angeles Rams No. 1 defense to sleep.

The eventual knockout blow just took two swings.

Roughly a quarter after Allen Lazard dropped what could have been a long touchdown off a play-action pass, Packers coach Matt LaFleur went back to the same concept at exactly the right time. The 58-yard touchdown from Aaron Rodgers to Allen Lazard gave the Packers a 14-point lead midway through the fourth quarter and helped clinched a spot in the NFC Championship Game.

Rodgers said the Packers were running repeated inside zone run calls all game. LaFleur confirmed the Packers thought all along that theyd eventually get a chance at a deep shot from the same look. When the play was called again, Rodgers first thought was touchdown.

We were running the same play over and over from that same formation and we felt like we were going to have a chance at a play-action pass off of it, LaFleur said.

The first opportunity ended in a drop. Rodgers sold the run fake, Lazard feigned a block before cutting quickly outside and then down the field, and Rodgers found him over the top for what could have been a 60-yard touchdown. The ball clanked off Lazards hands, and the Packers eventually punted.

Rodgers was happy that LaFleur went back to the call with the Packers protecting a 25-18 lead in the fourth quarter.

It was the same play that we ran earlier in the game, and he went outside of the guy and I threw it a little bit flat and he couldnt bring it down. Kudos to Matt for coming back to it. Great situation, Rodgers said.

On 2nd-and-6 from the Packers 42-yard line following a 4-yard run on first down, LaFleur dialed it up. Play-action pass off an inside zone run fake.

Rodgers once again sold the fake hard. Lazard faked the crack block on the safety before exploding up the field. When cornerback Troy Hill and safety Jordan Fuller both took the cheese, Lazard flashed wide open deep and the Packers had their game-clinching touchdown.

Big-time play in a big-time moment, LaFleur said.

LaFleur has turned the Packers into an offensive juggernaut by making different plays look identical pre- and post-snap. This was just the latest example.

It was also another example of the playcaller and quarterback being on the same page.

We talked about repeating that call. Because it really didnt look like what we were trying to run (the first time). The guy jumped so hard that Allen kind of went around him. So we talked about going back to it, Rodgers said.

Lazard had been cracking down on the safety all game. Deemed the enforcer of the offense by LaFleur earlier in the year, Lazard has earned a reputation for being an elite run-blocking receiver. All second-level defenders have to account for where he is in the run game or risk getting eliminated from the play. Run the crack block enough, and the muscle memory of the defenders can be manipulated against them.

When LaFleur called the play again, Rodgers was confident the Packers had the potential for a score.

Wed been running duo or inside zone effectively most of the night, and its just a hard action off of that. So when the play was called I was thinking touchdown, for sure. Came off the fake, really tried to sell it, came off the fake and saw Allen digging, so I knew both guys had jumped it. I did throw it a little more inside than I wanted to, and he made a really nice catch, kept his feet, put that thing away. That was pretty special.

When Can 401(k) Fiduciaries Get Excessive Fee Suits Dismissed? Anatomy of Two Recent Wins – JD Supra

ERISA fee litigation seems out of control. In fact, the number of lawsuits filed in 2020 was double the number filed in 2018. While some of the fiduciaries who were sued didnt take their fiduciary responsibilities seriously, many others who tried to do a good job were caught in the sights of aggressive class action attorneys.

There have been fewer decisions on the merits than you might expect in these cases, relative to the number filed. Many are settled without a final decision. This may leave fiduciaries wondering if it is ever possible to avoid a trial or extensive discovery if they are sued. Sometimes it is, as two recent federal district court decisions have shown. One was dismissed with prejudice, which means that the plaintiffs cant refile and bring the claims again. These decisions may provide a template for further dismissals of cases filed based on conclusory allegations and speculation rather than the actual conduct of the defendants.

The Vail Decision.

In Kurtz v. the Vail Corporation, a federal district court judge in Colorado dismissed the suit with prejudice without the need for fact-finding or a trial. Plaintiff had sought to bring a class action based on a number of conclusory allegations about the plans investments. These were that:

Plan fees of .63% were excessive because they were 90% higher than fees paid by comparable plans.

The plan fiduciaries didnt select the share class with the lowest fees.

The plan fiduciaries should have selected passive rather than actively managed funds.

Both the duty of prudence and the duty of loyalty had been violated.

Defendants also argued that the plaintiff was entitled to challenge only the funds in which she actually invested.

The Legal Analysis.

The court rejected the argument, based on the recent U.S. Supreme Court decision in Thole, [(140 S.Ct. 1615 (2020)] that plaintiff couldnt challenge funds in which she had not invested. The Supreme Court had found no constitutional standing, and no injury in fact, when defined benefit plan participants sought to sue for fiduciary breach based on allegedly imprudent investments because they would get the same benefit regardless of whether they prevailed. Here, plaintiffs retirement benefit would reflect the performance of the plans investments, so the Supreme Court decision didnt apply.

The court also found that fiduciary breach claims cannot be based on hindsight or solely on the performance of the investments chosen, but must be based on conduct. More than conclusory allegations must be made to prevent the lawsuit from being dismissed. Specifically, these standards apply in reviewing fiduciary breach claims

Conclusory allegations are not entitled to be presumed true. Just stating that the fiduciaries should have picked the share class with the lowest fees or should have offered all passive investments arent enough.

If there is a prudent fiduciary process, there is no duty to take a particular course of action.

Plaintiffs must show that a prudent fiduciary would not have made the decision as part of a prudent investment strategy that considered the whole portfolio.

The complaint was defective in failing to allege that defendants process was imprudent or to include statements about the information available to defendants when they made their decisions.

The court even cited favorably a decision that found that fees were excessive only if there was no reasonable relationship to the services provided or they were not arms length.

An allegation of breach of the duty of loyalty must contain allegations that the purpose of the activity was to benefit the fiduciaries. Receiving an incidental benefit is not enough.

Davis v. Salesforce.com

This decision by a judge in federal district court in California dismissed claims against both the plan committee and the Board based on the Boards alleged failure to monitor the committee. The plaintiff alleged fiduciary breaches based on:

Failure to select the share class with the lowest expense ratio

Excessive investment fees, based on a comparison of fees for actively managed funds with fees for passive funds

Failure to investigate collective trusts and insurance company separate accounts as potentially lower cost investments

Breach of the duty of loyalty by selecting a recordkeeper and fund managers related to investors in the company

Using language consistent with the Vail decision, this court also rejected allegations based on mere conclusions. The court found that:

Passive investment fund fees were not an appropriate benchmark for evaluating fees for actively managed funds. The two types of funds have different risks and management approaches.

Allegations based on 5 year investment returns dont look at a long enough period to justify plausible claims of imprudence

Fiduciaries are under no duty to offer alternatives to mutual funds

Merely stating that the share class with the lowest fees was not selected without more wont support a fiduciary breach claim. In this case, the share class selected paid revenue sharing, which was offset against fees and provided a benefit.

The mere existence of ownership relationships, such as the fact that the Fidelity Contrafund owned shares of the company, does not support a claim of breach of the duty of loyalty. There must be allegations that the fiduciaries intended to benefit themselves or parties other than the participants in making decisions.

Take Aways for Fiduciaries.

While these two decisions dont constitute a trend, they represent a common sense rejection of the assumption that there is only one right way to invest. Different choices are not presumptively wrong or imprudent. The decisions also confirm that prudence is determined based on process and the information available at the time, not by reviewing decisions with 20/20 hindsight. If fiduciaries raising the arguments that were successful in these cases dont succeed in getting the cases dismissed, they will still have an opportunity to demonstrate that they followed a prudent process and could prevail on summary judgment or after trial. Therefore, it remains crucial to have and follow a good investment policy statement and to carefully document the reasons for all decisions.

As his health continued to decline, Teddy began to turn to him for support after she went out on bad dates. Then she realized she was in love with Henry, and the pair shared one of the few healthy relationships on the show.

Tragically, this romance was not meant to last. Henry was diagnosed with a tumor near his heart. Dr Webber (James Pickens, Jr.) refused to let Teddy do surgery on him, so the task was turned over to Christina Yang.

Fans were hopeful that Henry would come through this, but the damage to his heart was too great. When Christina and Dr Webber opened him up, they discovered there was nothing they could do. Henry died on the table, and Christina was left to inform Teddy. She didnt know it was Henry she was operating on until after the fact, which just added to the pain of the moment.

It was one of the most heart-wrenching moments on the show. Teddy broke down, and Christina had to comfort her mentor. When Teddy left, Christina began to cry, which was something she rarely did on the show.

Even though a lot has happened since this scene, fans still grieve for Henry, and the only healthy relationship Teddy has probably ever been in. A Reddit user posted, Such greatness! And Cristina holds back any tears while Teddy is there and as soon as she leaves she looks up and cries, that was amazing too. Teddy & Cristina were really good in scenes together.

Another Reddit user posted, I liked Teddy and Henry so much. The scene where Christina finds out about how it was Henry she did surgery on stuck with me.

Even though Teddy has moved on to Owen, fans still mourn when she was with Henry. She may have moved on, but fans have not.

With the multitude of stories in Grey's Anatomy, it's no wonder the ABC medical drama eventually dropped these 10 storylines.

When a show has too much to offer, it's hard to notice what has been abandoned. Such is the case with the long-running medical drama Grey's Anatomy. Plenty of storylines have been introduced in the show's 17 seasons.Given the bulk, it's understandable that some of the subplots were left hanging.

Perhaps the showrunners forgot about them. Maybe the storylines were deemed not convincing enough to pursue further. Whatever was the case, the show's staunchest fans would have loved to know what occurred. Sadly, that might never happen.

For a brief moment, it looked like Alex and Izzie's relationship was going to work. Sadly,Grey's Anatomy's ghost of breakups attacked them too. When fled fled their hearts, Izzie decided to send Alex divorce papers.

Apart from the divorce, Alex had bigger problems to worry about. He was so much in debt and had no idea how to pay. The debt was brought about by Izzie's medical bills while she was being treated for cancer. Alex got into depression and briefly isolated himself from his friends. Interestingly, the debt issue was never brought up again. Alex appeared fine a few episodes later and moved on with life.

Mark's daughter Sloan Riley came looking for him after her mother kicked her out of the house. She hid her pregnancy from Mark and Lexie at first but she was soon forced to tell them.

She had minor complications during her pregnancy but luckily for her, she was under the watch of capable individuals. Riley also opted not to keep the baby, so she and her father discussed adoption as option. After that, Riley disappeared. It's unclear what happened to her or her baby. Even when Mark died, she didn't show up to mourn him.

George and Izzie had one of the shortest relationships in the medical drama series. In Season 3, the two were paired up afterGeorge cheated on Callie. He had also failed as an intern and Izzie was a shoulder to lean on.

Geroge divorced Callie to be with Izzie. However, in the following episodes, the relationship was ignored. The two were rarely seen together. What had happened? No one knows for sure. Izzie and George were portrayed as friends in the future. How they moved from lovers to casual friends is a mystery.

Some would argue that Sadie is a character that should never have been introduced. She first appeared in Season 5 only for her to disappear after a few episodes. None of the storylines she was accorded led anywhere.

At first, she became too close toMeredith, something Cristina appeared to be jealous about. This storyline was dropped to focus on a new storyline involving Sadie and Lexie's friendship. That storyline was dropped too for one where Sadie flirted with Callie. Nothing came out of that either and Sadie eventually quit her job.

During a night out,Erica and Callie bonded and developed feelings for each other. They got drunk, played darts, and discussed how they were both not popular among their colleagues. After that, they went out together a couple of times.

While the two werein an elevator, Erica kissed Callie. Things got complicated for them when Erica discovered that Izzie took a heart from one of her patients in order to give it to her patient-lover Denny.She was hell-bent on reporting Izzie, but Callie didn't want to. Angry, Erica quit. An accomplished cardiothoracic surgeon giving up her career for good over a minor disagreement seemedodd.

After Izzie's cancer scan came out clean, she made the decision to leave Seattle. Meredith begged her to stay because by leaving, she would be abandoned all the people that cared about her. Surprisingly, Izzie argued that Seattle was just where she worked. She didn't consider anyone there as family.

Izzie then left and for a long time, it was never clear what happened to her. Her story was recently revised again in Season 16's "Leave A Light On." Alex called her to check on her. It had been four years since she left. There was another unexpected turn as the two agreed to raise their children together. After all that time? She never addressed her controversial departure either.

For a long time, April was a conservative Christian who wasabstaining from sex untilmarriage. She constantly prayed and avoid engaging in any form ofacts her faith deemed sinful.

All of a sudden, April went full secular. She allowed Jackson to break her virginity before going on a one-night-stand spree. Why the change of heart? April stopped being a pure soul and decided to be like everyone else. There was no major event that influenced this particular decision. The show just dropped her holier-than-thou storyline.

Penny's Preminger Grant win came with a condition that she had to be in New York for a year. Callie made the unselfish decision of going with her even though she didn't ask her to. However, when Callie lost custody of Sofia, her relationship with Penny deteriorated, leading to a breakup.

When Arizona decided to bring Sofia to New York to be with Callie for a while, she got back together with Penny. However, in Season 14's "All Of Me,: Callie and Arizona revealed they were both single and looking forward to making each other happy. It's thus not clear why Callie and Penny broke up again.

Sydney was a surgical resident at Seattle Grace Hospital who Derek became attracted to. They went on a date but Sydney bluntly told Derek that she couldn't commit to him because she wasn't the kind of man she wanted. The two agreed to not let their unfilled romance interfere with their work.

Sydney's words were a relief to Derek because he wasn't sure about her either. Meredith had begged him to not date other women, even though they weren't together and it was good for Derek to honor her wishes. Interestingly, Sydney was never seen again after her date with Derek. Did she finally become a surgeon? Did she date other people?

Derek Shepherd's emotional death scene is still fresh on the minds of fans. No other event was as heartbreaking as that particular one. The show mostly focused on storylines involving who was to blame but left out other important parts.

It was revealed that right before the accident, Derek took a shorter route through a valley that had no cell phone signal. Despite this, his phone still rang. He also couldn't hear or see the giant semi-truck approaching as he spoke on the phone. His ID wasn't found either. So many questions were brought up regarding his death but no answers were given.

If you want to play linebacker in the modern NFL, youd better be versatile. The days of the Mike Singletary-style backer who stayed in the middle and just crashed forward to stop the run are over in an era when teams on average play base defense less than 20% of the time, and dime defense more than 20% of the time. Now, the best linebackers can do everything from blowing up run fits to playing the slot credibly to rushing the passer from multiple gaps. Anything less that, and youre a liability and that will show up in your snap counts.

That said, there are times when even the best linebackers should have their roles reduced from a variety perspective. Devin White, the second-year star for the Buccaneers, has the most sacks among off-the-ball backers with nine, the second-most total pressures with 31, the fifth-most stops with 56, and the ninth-most tackles with 95.

Thats the good side. The bad side? Per Pro Football Focus, White has the most targets in coverage among off-ball backers with 98, and hes allowed the most catches (86) for the most receiving yards (761), the second-most yards after catch (410), the second-most touchdowns allowed (four, tied with several other linebackers), and an opponent passer rating of 112.6. If White has an absolute dominant trait to his game, its his knack for creating quarterback pressure. If theres an obvious liability, its Whites ability to hold up in coverage. That may change over time given Whites eagerness to improve, game intelligence, and physical gifts, but we are where we are with this.

Devin White: Forward, not backward.

It matters very specifically when it comes to the Buccaneers' opportunities to beat the Saints in the divisional round. New Orleans swept the regular-season series, and in those games, White allowed 15 catches on 17 targets for 108 yards, 65 yards after the catch, two touchdowns, and no interceptions. Conversely, White had no quarterback pressures of any kind in either game -- no sacks, no quarterback hits, no quarterback hurries. Zip, nada, bupkis. This is as antithetical to a player's skill set as you'll see, and if the Bucs want to get off the schneid, this had better change. In those two games, Drew Brees was pressured on just 20 of his 65 dropbacks. He was sacked twice, but he also completed nine of 17 passes for 79 yards, two touchdowns, no interceptions, and a passer rating of 104.8. Part of the reason for this is the Saints' quick game. Brees has averaged 2.47 seconds per attempt from snap to throw this season, which is eighth-quickest among quarterbacks who have taken at least 50% of their teams' snaps. Brees also has 18 touchdowns and one interception on throws he gets off in less than 2.5 seconds, per PFF, as opposed to eight touchdowns and five interceptions on throws that take more than 2.5 seconds. If you let Brees control the time, you're dead. If you force him to prolong plays with pressure and coverage, you've got a shot. It's as simple as that. White could (and should) be the key to forcing Brees to make bad decisions under pressure, as opposed to making Brees' eyes light up when he's in coverage.

The best game plan against Drew Brees? It's obvious.

White missed the regular-season finale and the Bucs' wild-card win over Washington after he was placed on the Reserve/COVID list, but he's back just in time for this game, and head coach Bruce Arians is rather excited about that. "First, let me say how [well] Kevin Minter played in those two ballgames," Arians said this week. "He was outstanding [and] did a great job. But he's not Devin. Bringing Devin's passion, his energy [and] his speed hopefully, he can get after the quarterback some like he's been doing so well. You're bringing back one of the top players in the league." Arians was also asked about how White can affect New Orleans' offense with pressure -- as he most certainly did not in Week 1 and Week 9. "You would hope so. But again, the ball comes out of [Drew Brees'] hand so quickly it's hard. You can get your hands up and maybe bat some balls around, but I thought the Bears did a really good job [in the wild-card round] of containing him other than that first drive where they played all that zone. They've got so many weapons and he knows where that ball is going by the time that back foot hits, so if you're going to get to him, you better get in there free." This quote tells you a couple things -- you're probably going to see one of those Todd Bowles game plans in which the Bucs marry multiple fronts and aggressive coverages as opposed to a bunch of static fronts and spot-drop nonsense, and we've already discussed that. https://touchdownwire.usatoday.com/2021/01/07/anatomy-of-a-wild-card-win-buccaneers-defense-must-return-to-the-aaron-rodgers-plan/ The second thing Arians' quote tells you is that the Bucs are rightly concerned about Brees' ability to get the ball out quickly and thus negate the pass rush. That doesn't mean you have to take White out of the pass-rush plan and sentence him to a three-hour purgatory of bad coverage. On the contrary -- White is uniquely suited among players at his position to provide quick-game pressure in the pocket, and to track down mobile quarterbacks when they're forced to move. Brees obviously fits both categories.

White's multiplicity as a pass-rusher can change any game. Anything else is a mistake.

White had three sacks in two different games this season -- in Week 7 against the Raiders, and in Week 15 against the Falcons. Those games also reveal a lot about how versatile White is as a pass-rusher, and why this should be his primary responsibility against the Saints. Worried about Brees and the quick game? How about having White cheat up pre-snap and then delaying a blitz to stop a pass from a short drop, as he did here against Matt Ryan? And here, White becomes a gap-spinner from the second level, finding the open gap as a running back would, much to Mr. Ryan's consternation. And if Brees wants to get frisky outside the pocket -- or if Taysom Hill is running to the outside -- White has the diagnostic ability and catchup speed to make that a problem. Its a bear front concept with White and Lavonte David as the edge defenders, and Shaquil Barrett, whos normally an edge-rusher, working in the middle linebacker spot. At the snap, both White and David take off for the quarterback. Left tackle David Bakhtiari and left guard Elgton Jenkins double right defensive end Ndamukong Suh, running back Jamaal Williams whiffs on the cross-block of David, and David gets to Rodgers just before Barrett can. After the play, Rodgers can be seen yelling at everyone unfortunate enough to be in his general vicinity. So, White has demonstrated the ability to get after the quarterback from just about anywhere. It's time for the Buccaneers to let him unleash it against the Saints. We always knew he was a great blitzer, Arians said after the Raiders game, per Luke Easterling of Bucs Wire. They [White and Lavonte David] both are. Thats the beauty of it, when he comes up the middle, he is a force. If we can get him on the back or they run twists so well together too. So, I mean hes a dynamic player. Both of them with such speed that has made them ridiculous in the pass rush game. White, for his part, is more than ready to take on whatever role he's given. "I think we've got to let our guys just be [themselves]," he said on Wednesday, when asked how the Bucs can limit Brees' ability to extend plays. "We can't overdo anything and we can't get out of our means. We've got [edge-rushers] Jason Pierre-Paul and we've got Shaq [Barrett], so we've got to let those guys get after him because that's what they do [and] that's what we pay them to do. We need to let them do it. "We've got to stay sound in the front with our two tackles without letting them push the pocket and let the outside guys do what they've got to do. I think the thing that [can] throw Drew Brees of is we've just got to be physical with the receivers, tight ends and the running backs. Don't let them play pitch and catch I think that will be the biggest 'it factor' for us. If we come out physical and we get our hands on those guys, I think we'll do a great job." Well, yes, but if the Buccaneers fail to avail themselves of the NFL's best pass-rushing off-ball linebacker doing what he does best, it may be the last game plan they get to draw up this season.

Anatomy of a blackmailer – The News International

The 10 Hazara coal miners have finally been laid to rest. Their bodies carried many burdens, surely overwhelmed by the baggage of history, economic vulnerability, neglect and ostracisation. In their last moments above ground as they lay in the cold winter of Machh, collectively mourned by the Hazara community, they carried their last burden of being called pawns.

In response to the plea of the families of the slain victims, Prime Minister Imran Khan asserted that he will not be blackmailed into visiting the site unless and he demanded they bury their dead. And who better than Imran Khan would know that when the odds are against the opposing party, and you possess the power to deprive them of an option and coerce a decision based on your desires, youre the one calling the shots.

So did the Hazaras blackmail the prime minister?

The act of blackmail is rooted in a power relationship where the balance is tipped in favour of the perpetrator. The perpetrator influences the victims behaviour in a manner that clashes with the latters rationality, expectations and preferences. The victims inability to make their own decisions interferes with their autonomy and freedom of action. The threat of punishment in the absence of compliance deprives the victim of a choice and adds to the abuse of power. The most important test of blackmail, however, is to decipher whether the perpetrator engenders a relationship of dominance and subordination through the act of blackmailing.

Hazaras have historically been victims of persecution and sectarian violence. Unlike other Shia communities, they are easily identifiable due to their distinct facial features that make them susceptible to attacks. Before the 19th century, they were the largest ethnic group in Afghanistan, constituting around 67 percent of the total population.

During the reign of Abdur Rahman Khan in 1893, more than half were massacred and fled from Hazarajat to the Jowzjan and Badghis provinces, while others were displaced and shipped to Khorasan in Iran, and Balochistan in British India. However, this did not put an end to their suffering. Hazaras have since sought refuge from militant groups in many countries with great risks to their lives. Many have drowned over the years on their way to faraway Australia, inching towards the possibility of a better life.

Most Hazaras in Pakistan live in Quetta, many of whom reside in two highly guarded neighbourhoods on either end of the city, Alamdar Road and Hazara Town. There are two main routes in and out of Hazara Town, one of which Kirani Road is considered dangerous for Hazaras to travel on. On the other hand, Spini road, which has seen over 12 targeted attacks against the Hazara community, is considered a safe route by the government.

Hazaras have restricted access to healthcare and educational facilities as they are situated outside these enclaves. Perpetual dread and the looming security situation restrict Hazara public life to these barracks where they are reminded of their eviction and the precariousness of life with security checkpoints, paramilitary troops and high walls on full display.

Restricted mobility, anticipation of danger, social isolation and limited opportunities are at the centre of the Hazara experience. Insufficient education and employment opportunities in tandem with generational poverty, as a consequence of Hazara communities migrating and fleeing persecution, has set the seal on their economic depravity. These factors have pushed Hazaras to opt for dangerous jobs like coal mining and other menial labour jobs like road construction. Their involvement in unskilled labour has further propelled their stigmatisation.

Disapproving the Hazara plea as blackmail is akin to disregarding their generational pain and persecution, and accusing them of power they do not possess. Even as they sat powerless next to their dead, their dehumanisation was cemented as their only bargaining chip was their dead and their bargain was life in return. The communitys subordinate position in Pakistans national makeup is evident from the fact that where most leaders would offer grace and dignity to a community having witnessed such tragedy, the Hazaras stood accused and had to succumb to the demands and ego of the representatives of the people of Pakistan.

The act of blackmail produces a relationship where power, coercion and autonomy rest with the perpetrator, while the victim is deprived of their freedom of action. Let us not mistake the plea of the Hazaras for an act they dont have the social, economic and political capital to orchestrate. Let us be kind and considerate with our words, and be mindful of the burden they carry.
