A new trailer for Grey's Anatomy season 20 teases the triumphant return of Meredith Grey. The titular doctor, played by Ellen Pompeo, was one of the main characrters of the long-running medical drama, which is set in and around the fictional Seattle Grace Hospital. However, after more than 400 episodes as one of the show's primary stars, Pompeo departed midway through season 19 in episode 7, titled "I'll Follow the Sun."

ABC has unveiled a new teaser for Grey's Anatomy season 20 showcasing Meredith's return to Seattle Grace. Check it out below:

The trailer opens with a clip of Meredith asking "how long do I have to wait?" alongside other characters speaking similar lines teasing the upcoming March 14 premiere date. This montage is followed by a barrage of clips showcasing the dramatic happenings of the season, including the possible firing of one of the new staff members and a medical emergency for Dr. Teddy Altman (Kim Raver).

It is currently unknown exactly how Meredith's life will be going at the time she returns to visit Seattle Grace when the show resumes following the Grey's Anatomy season 19 finale. However, her exit from the show was largely couched in positive change. The character finally decided to move away from Seattle so her precocious daughter Zola (Aniela Gumbs) could get a proper education at a school for gifted children in Boston.

Although Meredith has not been seen onscreen for some time, her exit from the Grey's Anatomy cast was never entirely permanent. She has already returned in a voice-only capacity, continuing her character's habit of narrating the show. Behind the scenes, Pompeo has also remained on board as an executive producer for the show which has defined nearly two decades of her career.

It is currently unknown exactly how many episodes of the upcoming season of Grey's Anatomy will feature Pompeo onscreen, though it has been confirmed she will be appearing in the premiere and at least one additional episode. The shortened post-strike season only features 10 episodes, so it seems somewhat unlikely she will stay for more. However, this quick return to the show reveals that Pompeo isn't averse to stopping by Seattle Grace time and again, meaning future seasons could potentially see further reappearances.
