Four Principles of Human Behavior

As you well know, a large portion of the SubSkills Online Training Course was dedicated to classroom management strategies as it is the number one concern of substitute teachers. Before we begin reviewing those strategies, four principles of human behavior need to be understood.

Principles are truths not limited by age, time, location, or situation. Once you become familiar with behavior principles, you will see them illustrated all around youbetween parents and children, in stores, on playgrounds, at family events, etc. It is impossible to write a book that covers every classroom scenario you may encounter as a teacher. However, when you know and understand these principles, your actions can change, increasing the likelihood that the students in your class will behave appropriately.

Principle One: Behavior is largely a product of its immediate environment.

The classroom environment teachers create through the expectations they set will influence students more than outside factors do. This allows teachers to take control and influence the students behavior in their classrooms. If a student is acting out, the teacher should pay special attention to altering the classroom (immediate environment). If the teacher changes the classroom, the behavior of the students will change.

Principle Two: Behavior is strengthened or weakened by its consequences.

When disruptive behavior becomes a pattern, it is important to take a look at what is happening immediately after the behavior. Attention from a teacher is a powerful motivator for most students. If you pay more attention to students who are behaving appropriately than to students who are not, you will be encouraging appropriate behavior.

Principle Three: Behavior ultimately responds better to positive than to negative consequences.

People respond better to positive encouragement than to negative processes. Think of the tasks you do every day; if someone thanks you or compliments you on how well you did, you feel much more likely to continue the task. As a teacher, you can help stop undesirable behavior and increase appropriate behavior by genuinely reinforcing the latter.

Principle Four: Whether a behavior has been punished or reinforced is known only by the course of that behavior in the future.

If an appropriate behavior is repeated, it has been reinforced. If an undesirable behavior is repeated, it too has been reinforced. If an undesirable behavior has discontinued, it has been properly disciplined.

The only way to tell if a response to a behavior is punishing or reinforcing is to watch what happens to the behavior in the future. What is considered a punishment to one person may reinforce and perpetuate a behavior in another.

Understanding these four principles of human behavior is a key to your success in the classroom. As you work to fully apply and practice each one, you will feel confident when approaching the classroom because you can make correct decisions about managing behavior. The most important thing to remember about each of these principles is that they are a call to action on your partyou can manage student behavior properly only by first managing your own.

The Immunology Training Area is a unique joint effort between several departments at UC San Diego and LJI: the Department of Medicine, Pathology, Biological Sciences, and the La Jolla Institute for Allergy and Immunology. The overall goal of this training area is to provide students with exceptional and rigorous training in molecular and cellular immunology. The study of the immune system uses molecular, genetic, biochemical, and developmental approaches to understand the biomedically important issues of immunity, autoimmunity, allergy, immunodeficiency, transplantation, and cancer. Moreover, studies focusing on human disease pathogenesis often lead to insight into the fundamental mechanisms by which the immune response is regulated. Many faculty research programs now bridge the disciplines of Microbiology and Immunology to probe the specific interactions between microbial virulence factors and host innate and adaptive immune defenses. In this fashion, we gain a better understanding of the fundamental pathogenesis of infectious diseases and further development of vaccines and other immunotherapies.

Immunology faculty associated with the training area study a diverse range of topics, from fundamental mechanisms of B and T lymphocyte development and differentiation; basic mechanisms of innate immune defense involving dendritic cells, macrophages, and neutrophils; immunity against microbial pathogens as well as tumors; mucosal immunity; autoimmune disease, including diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, and the inflammatory bowel disease; and hematopoietic stem cell and organ transplantation. A guiding principle throughout their research is the use of cutting-edge technology and multi-disciplinary approaches to fundamentally address major human health issues.

The training area is tightly integrated with several other training initiatives on campus. The multidisciplinary qBio Ph.D. specializationis open to all graduate students in the BMS program. The UC San Diego Center for Microbiome Innovation promotes training at the cutting-edge of microbiome research, biomedical engineering, and quantitative measurements and modeling.

Bovine Pregnancy Test

The Immunology Section of the Diagnostic Laboratory Service is now a NPIP certified provider of the AGID Avian Influenza Test. As part of the Colleges effort to support animal health efforts of the State of Tennessee, the lab has completed the training and proficiency requirements to perform the test. Questions regarding sample submission for testing can be addressed to the Laboratory staff at (865) 974-5643.

Biochemistry | Smith College

Because biochemistry builds on the fundamentals of both biology and chemistry, students who major in biochemistry begin by taking introductory courses in both of these fields. Biochemistry follows in either your second or third year, along with additional courses in cell biology, physiology, molecular biology and physical chemistry. More specialized courses can be selected according to students' individual interests.

*Exemption from BIO 132/133 may be obtained if you received advanced placement on your Smith College transcript for biology (e.g. AP, International Baccalaureate, A levels).

To this day, Biochemistry provides the interface between the living and non-living worlds.The goals of the Biochemistry research faculty in the Department of Biological Sciences are to understand the molecular mechanisms underlying biological processes, and o examine the relationships between structure and function in biological macromolecules. Our interests include the mechanisms of action of both protein and RNA catalysts, and our studies require state-of-the-art methods ranging from X-ray crystallography, steady-state and single turnover kinetics, protein and nucleic acid purification and analysis, and mathematical modeling.
