EGBA joins opposition to Swedish casino restrictions – iGaming Business

The European Gaming and Betting Association (EGBA) has criticised the online casino restrictions set to come into force in Sweden next month as not evidence-led and warned they may do more harm than good for Swedish player protection.

Proposed by Minister for Health and Social Affairs Ardalan Shekarabi, the restrictions would set an SEK5,000 (401/459/$495) mandatory weekly deposit limit and a SEK100 cap on bonuses from 1 June to the end of 2020.

Maarten Haijer, secretary general of EGBA, said the restrictions could end up doing more harm than good.

We understand that politicians seek to reassure and protect their citizens during these difficult times, but the proposed gambling restrictions could actually harm more customers than they protect, Haijer said. Many Swedes are already gambling on unlicensed websites and these restrictions will make unlicensed websites which dont apply any limits even more attractive to them.

EGBA said that the regulations were not evidence-led and the more effective way of preventing problem gambling during lockdown would be to focus specifically on at-risk customers. The Association cited data from Belgium, Denmark and Great Britain as well as H2s global gambling forecasts, all of which it said proved online gambling has decreased substantially.

Rather than one-size-fits-all restrictions, which will have no effect on the majority of customers and jeopardise consumer protection for those they seek to protect, EGBA supports targeted measures, including tailored interventions, to protect those at risk of problem gambling at this time, it said.

EGBA echoed the Swedish Gaming Authoritys (Spelinspektionen) sentiments towards the rules, which the regulator said could have a negative effect on channelisation towards the licenced market in Sweden

The deposit limit could, as Spelinspektionen rightly warn, drive high-spending players towards unlicensed websites which undermine their consumer protection these websites are readily available, easy to access and do not apply any limits or responsible gambling measures, including the countrys Spelpaus self-exclusion scheme, EGBA added.

Haijer concluded by saying that top-down regulation is rarely the most effective way to solve problem gambling issues.

We must remember gambling is human behavior, consumers will always make their own choices and top-down regulation rarely works. In this case, it could have detrimental or counterproductive effects by pushing more gambling onto unregulated websites.

Many businesses active in the Swedish market have also criticised the controls. Cherry warned that the controls could make it harder to track changes in customer habits and spending as players would move between operators more frequently.

AB Trav och Galopp (ATG) said it supported efforts to improve safeguards, though also noted that it has seen no increase in unhealthy play among its customer base.

Henrik Tjrnstrm, chief executive of Unibet operator Kindred, called the proposals an open invitation to illegal gambling sites, while Svenska Spel chief executive Patrik Hofbauer argued existing regulations set out each operator's responsibilties to customers, meaning that additional controls were unnecessary.

Researchers are developing a diagnostic test that predicts the advanced stages of COVID-19 patients – News-Medical.Net

A research team from the University of Valencia, led by Professor Juan Saus from the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, is developing a project to provide the healthcare system with a diagnostic test that anticipates the entry into advanced stages of patients with COVID-19 and a scalable oral treatment for the disease.

The proposal has the support of the Valencian Government, within the call "Capacities of the Valencian System of Innovation in the fight against COVID-19", which finances actions that provide innovative solutions to the new coronavirus.

Goodpasture syndrome has been the subject of study by the research group led by Juan Saus at the University of Valencia since 1988. It is a pulmonary haemorrhage with kidney failure that currently manifests itself very sporadically and that, thanks to new discoveries made by Saus' team, has given way to a therapeutic proposal for COVID-19.

GPBP (Goodpasture antigen binding protein), when overexpressed and accumulates outside the cell, causes a destructuring of the microenvironment and transforms thin membranous structures into thick fibrous walls that make it difficult for oxygenation and blood purification in the lung and kidney."

Juan Saus, Professor, Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, University of Valencia

"This established the basis for the development of EMTEST, a prototype to measure GPBP in blood and T12, a compound specifically designed to inhibit it", explains Juan Saus.

The research team observed that GPBP accumulates in the lungs of patients with a condition of severe respiratory distress called adult respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), caused by infections or sepsis.

"There are increasing amounts of evidence that a sepsis with a predominance of lung involvement is the cause of fatality in COVID-19", explains Saus.

"With sepsis, antibacterial or antiviral treatments are not effective enough in stopping the process. Once ARDS has been triggered in COVID-19 patients, a treatment that eliminates the coronavirus is not expected to significantly modify the fatal course of the disease", concludes the expert.

For this reason, the project wants to use EMTEST to measure GPBP in the blood of COVID-19 patients and anticipate the appearance of ARDS. Then, with controlled GPBP levels, administer T12 to COVID-19 patients at risk of respiratory distress to avoid the onset of this disease.

"With this proposal we want to develop a diagnosis of the imminence of ARDS and a specific treatment to improve the survival of people with COVID-19 and avoid collapses in the Health System", says Juan Saus.

Fish might have to trade brains for brawn – Pet Business World News

Climate change could leave freshwater fish with bigger brains but a reduced ability to effectively explore their surroundings, scientists have found.

In order to survive, the worlds aquatic life will need to adapt to the warmer waters that global warming will produce in the coming decades.

New research by University of Glasgow biologists suggests that the physiological changes fish will undergo in warmer rivers might require them to trade brains for brawn, with potentially challenging consequences.

In order to test how living in warmer waters might affect cold-blooded freshwater fish, researchers from the Universitys Institute of Biodiversity Animal Health & Comparative Medicine fished minnows from the river Kelvin, close to the university, and split them into two groups.

One group of minnows was raised in tanks filled with water kept at the rivers usual temperature of 14C. The other spent their time in tanks heated to 20C, at the higher end of the temperature range climate scientists expect the river could reach by the end of the 21st century.

BEHAVIOUR

Over the course of eight months, the researchers paid close attention to each minnows physiology and behaviour, and watched how they interacted with their environment.

Measuring the minnows oxygen consumption at rest and during exercise showed that the fish in the warmer tanks used more energy in both states, suggesting their metabolisms had ratcheted up as they adapted to the heat.

The researchers also observed that the minnows from the 20C tanks developed bigger brains than their cooler counterparts. However, despite their bigger brains, they performed significantly worse in a test designed to measure their ability to navigate and find food.

They struggled to navigate a maze to reach a mealworm and, even though they had four attempts to learn the layout of the puzzle, their performance did not improve with repetition.

Dr Libor Zavorka, the papers lead author, said: While the minnows we studied were able to adapt to live in the warmer water, their reduced ability to find their way around in order to catch food does raise some questions. Although we found their brains were larger, they seemed less able to accomplish the simple tasks that minnows carry out every day.

BRAIN

Its likely that the expansion of brain tissue isnt accompanied by an expansion of neural density, so their brains dont provide any additional benefits for being larger. Brain tissue requires a lot of energy to maintain, so its likely that the minnows bigger brains act solely as a drain on their resources.

As their metabolisms increase to cope with the larger brains and the increased temperature of the water, they will need to eat more to fuel their bodies but if they are less able to find food efficiently, they will need to spend more energy looking for it.

Professor Shaun Killen, head of the research group which produced the study, said: We chose minnows for this study because theyre a useful model species, found in many places across the northern hemisphere across a broad range of temperatures.

Surprisingly, this research is the first real study of how fish physiology, brain structure and behaviours might be affected by the warming of their habitats.

Our findings suggest that disrupting the delicate balance between the minnows physiology and their environment causes some unexpected side-effects. Were keen to extend our research further to explore the potential outcomes for freshwater fish in the increasingly challenging environments they will face in the future.

Nobel Prize for Medicine: Recipients awarded for discoveries of vaccines and treatments – Newsum

While the world is still looking for a vaccine to combat the coronavirus, there have been many eminent scientists in the past that have advanced the life expectancy of the human race because of their pioneering work into treatments for diseases and medical conditions.

Several such scientists and researchers have received the Nobel Prize in Medicine for their groundbreaking work on vaccines and treatments for several diseases. In this article, we discuss the life and works of a few such scientists.

Emil Adolf von Behring 1901

The Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine 1901 was awarded to Emil Adolf von Behring for his work on serum therapy, especially its application against diphtheria, by which he has opened a new road in the domain of medical science and thereby placed in the hands of the physician a victorious weapon against illness and deaths.

Born in 15th March 1854 in current day Poland, Emil von Behring was a physiologist and was the first ever to be awarded the Nobel Prize in Medicine. He demonstrated by his experiments that antibodies could be transferred from one person or animal to another by means of blood plasma or serum. This process caused the recipient also to become immune to a particular disease.

To cure diptheria a bacterial infection, Behring introduced serum from horses into humans and he was awarded the first Nobel Prize in Medicine for this innovative discovery.

Ronald Ross 1902

The Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine 1902 was awarded to Ronald Ross for his work on malaria, by which he has shown how it enters the organism and thereby has laid the foundation for successful research on this disease and methods of combating it.

Born on 13th May, 1857 in India, Ronald Ross was instrumental in bringing about an understanding of insect-borne diseases. He also proved the role of the Anopheles mosquito in the transmission of the malaria parasite in human beings. This knowledge laid the foundation for developing an effective method of combating the disease. Throughout his life, he worked on the ways to prevent the occurrence of malaria across the world.

He also held the position of Director in Chief of the Ross Institute and Hospital of Tropical Diseases and Hygiene, an organization established to honour his works, till his death.

However, Ross was also a polymath, who wrote poems, composed songs, and published novels. Apart from this, he was also a painter and a mathematician.

Sir Alexander Fleming, Ernst Boris Chain and Sir Howard Walter Florey 1945

The Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine 1945 was awarded jointly to Sir Alexander Fleming, Ernst Boris Chain and Sir Howard Walter Florey for the discovery of penicillin and its curative effect in various infectious diseases.

Born on 6th August 1881 in Scotland, Sir Alexander Fleming was instrumental in the discovery of penicillin, an antibiotic that is a mainstay in treating bacterial infections. The discovery process of penicillin is also worth reading! Fleming would often leave bowls with bacteria cultures around his worktable. Once, he noticed that apart from bacteria, a fungus mold also began growing, which hampered the growth of the bacteria. This discovery helped him infer that the mold contained a substance that could effective stop bacterial growth. And he called this substance penicillin.

After Sir Fleming discovered penicillin, the next step was to use it effectively in the pharmaceutical industry. However, creating penicillin in its pure form was not an easy task because of its instability.

Researchers Ernst Chain and Howard Florey successfully produced penicillin in its pure form, which subsequently led to the production of this antibiotic in large quantities for use in the pharmaceutical industry.

Max Theiler 1951

The Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine 1951 was awarded to Max Theiler for his discoveries concerning yellow fever and how to combat it.

Born on 30th January 1899 in South Africa, Theiler was awarded the Nobel Prize for developing a vaccine for yellow fever, which was known to be a deadly disease in the tropics. Yellow fever is caused by a virus and Theiler was successful in transmitting the virus to mice. When this virus was successfully transmitted between mice, Theiler discovered a weakened form of the virus that could make apes immune. Subsequently, a much weaker form of the virus called 17D was discovered, which could be used as a human vaccine.

Selman Abraham Waksman 1952

The Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine 1952 was awarded to Selman Abraham Waksman for his discovery of streptomycin, the first antibiotic effective against tuberculosis.

Born on 22nd July 1888, Selman Waksman was an inventor, biochemist, and microbiologist. His path breaking research into the decomposition of organisms that live in soil was instrumental in the discovery of streptomycin, an antibiotic used to treat a wide range of bacterial infections. He was also successful in isolating numerous new antibiotics that include actinomycin (1940), clavacin, streptothricin (1942), streptomycin (1943), grisein (1946), neomycin (1948), fradicin, candicidin, candidin, and others.

$10 million gift accelerates research to improve cancer therapies, extend benefits to more patients – Newswise

Newswise Researchers at the University of Chicago Medicine will come together to develop personalized therapies for hard-to-treat cancers, thanks to a $10 million gift from the Jonas family.

The gift establishes the David and Etta Jonas Center for Cellular Therapy at UChicago Medicine, named for David Jonas and his late wife, Etta.

The center unites a team of experts dedicated to improving cellular therapy, especially T-cell treatments like CAR (chimeric antigen receptor) T-cell therapy, an emerging form of cancer treatment. CAR T-cell therapy works by supercharging patients white blood cells to seek out and destroy cancer cells. Although this therapy has, in some cases, led to complete remission, it is not always successful and is currently limited to treating certain blood cancers.

Through the David and Etta Jonas Center for Cellular Therapy, researchers at UChicago Medicine will work to overcome these challenges and realize the full potential of cellular therapy. This includes efforts to improve the therapys overall effectiveness and extend its benefits to a much broader group of patients, including those with cancers that are currently difficult to treat.

I was impressed by UChicago Medicines multidisciplinary research program and commitment to attaining tangible outcomes that will really serve cancer patients, Jonas said. They have all the key elements for a successful research program: experience in clinical trials, access to the most leading-edge technology, a tremendous track record in attracting scientific talent, and a strong team to lead the program.

Developing truly personalized therapies T-cells patrol our bodies, searching for signs of infection and disease. When T-cells detect an abnormal protein on the surface of a cell, called an antigen, they latch onto it with a matching receptor. Like puzzle pieces, the antigen and T-cell receptor bind together, triggering an immune response that destroys the cell.

Some cancers, however, develop ways to trick the immune system, such as by disguising themselves as healthy cells or by shutting down the immune response altogether. CAR-T cell therapy helps to resolve this by modifying patients T-cells in the lab, so they can better recognize and target cancer-specific antigens.

However, there isnt a one-size-fits-all approach to targeting antigens since they are unique to each patient and his or her tumor; nor is there a reliable method for predicting which antigens a given tumor will express. To address these challenges, Hans Schreiber, MD, PhD, professor of pathology at the University of Chicago, has developed a new method for personalized T-cell therapy. By characterizing a patients T-cell receptors, he is able to engineer a customized therapy that accurately targets the tumors unique antigens.

This highly personalized approach to T-cell therapy can safely target cancer cells, without damaging healthy tissue. It also has the potential to treat other cancer typesbeyond blood cancersincluding hard-to-treat solid tumors, like pancreatic and ovarian cancers. With new investments in infrastructure and expertise, the Jonas Center will accelerate this research effort and develop this therapy for clinical trials for patients with metastatic solid tumors, through a collaboration with Michael Bishop, MD, professor of medicine and director of the Cellular Therapy Program, and Amittha Wickrema, PhD, professor of medicine.

This gift will allow us to translate these groundbreaking discoveries made in the laboratory into novel cancer therapies, which have the potential to treat not just blood cancers, but also solid tumors, said Kenneth Polonsky, MD, dean and executive vice president for medical affairs at the University of Chicago. If we can accomplish even part of that, it will be a major transformation in cancer therapy that will change the lives of many patients here in the United States and around the world.

Improving response ratesWhile some patients have an excellent response to CAR T-cell therapy, others do not respond or relapse shortly after undergoing treatment.

Bishop is leading an effort to identify factors that contribute to the therapys success, which is showing response rates greater than 90% for patients with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL).

Bishop suspects that the fitness of patients T cells may determine if, and how well, they respond to therapy. Like a soccer team, it is important that patients T cells are not only fit enough to successfully take on their opponent (the cancer), but they must also be able to sustain their energy long enough to defeat their opponent and win the game.

By identifying the qualities that make T cells fit, Bishop and his colleagues seek to predict how a patient will respond to the therapy in advance. This way, a patients T cells could be sequenced prior to undergoing treatmentallowing physicians to gauge if their immune system will be able to wage a successful attack against the cancer. In cases where the patients T cells are deemed unfit, the researchers aim to develop interventions to improve their fitness.

This is the most exciting time in my entire career, Bishop said. We finally have hope for patients who previously didnt have hope. And now we are working to improve upon these results. Within the next 10 years, I think these treatments are going to become more effective, less toxic, and most importantly, will give new options to a broader scope of patients.

Building an infrastructure for success The Jonas familys gift will provide essential funding to advance research initiatives, while also putting in place the necessary infrastructure to sustain a successful research enterprise in the years to come. To this end, the Jonas Center will allow for: Recruitment of leading experts in T-cell biology and cell engineering Expansion of research and clinical trials infrastructure Acquisition of specialized technology and equipment necessary to translate discoveries made in the laboratory to the clinic An annual lecture that brings together leaders in cellular therapy and fosters dissemination of the latest innovations in the field

We feel extremely proud and appreciative to have the opportunity to partner with the University of Chicago in this effort, Jonas said. We see our contribution as the seed for building a robust program that will lead to the next breakthrough in cancer therapy.

This gift represents the single largest donation to UChicago Medicine for cellular therapy research.###

More than 70 percent of coronavirus cases in Israel came from US: study | TheHill – The Hill

More than 70 percent of coronavirus cases in Israel came from the U.S., according to a study released Monday by Tel Aviv University.

Researchers mapped the spread of the virus by decoding genomic sequences of virus strains in determining thatthe majority of Israels cases originated in the U.S., Adi Stern of the School of Molecular Cell Biology and Biotechnology at the university told The Jerusalem Post.

The researchersused about 4,700 sequences taken globally to compare local patient sequences.

The study, published on medRxiv.org, found the remaining infections in Israel came from Europe and elsewhere, including 8 percent from Belgium, 6 percent from France, 5 percent from England and 3 percent from Spain. The researchers concluded that all infections came from abroad.

Israel did not shut down travel from the U.S. and most visitors from abroad until March 9, while flights from Europe and other areas of the world shut down between Feb. 26 and March 4.

There was this gap in policy, and this gap allowed people to return from the US who thought that they could go wherever they wanted, so they probably spread the virus that way, Stern told the Post.

Some infections originating from Europe and Southeast Asia also entered the country, but those patients were quarantined early, limiting the coronaviruss spread, the Post reported.

The researchers determined that between 1 percent and 10 percent of patients spread about 80 percent of cases at super-spreading events, such as large parties or other social gatherings. But the study determined that social distancing efforts did reduce the amount of spread.

Before the study, health officials depended on patient feedback in order to track the spread.

Tel Aviv University was assisted by 11 other health institutes or universities, including Emory University, in the study.

Israel has confirmed 16,643 cases in the country, leading to at least 276 deaths, according to data from Johns Hopkins University.
