Weekend events to mark 90th birthday of Nobel laureate William C Campbell – The Irish Times

For Prof William C Campbell, Irelands only winner of the Nobel Prize in physiology or medicine, Sunday will mark another significant milestone in his remarkable life of scientific endeavour.

His 90th birthday will be celebrated at a small family gathering in Boston, but it will also coincide with publication by the Royal Irish Academy (RIA) of his memoir Catching the Worm a story of the discovery of the drug ivermectin for veterinary use in livestock to eliminate parasites, and then its subsequent adaptation for use in humans.

In 1987, nine years after the latter discovery, his employer Merck Research Laboratories decided to distribute the drug free of charge, saving millions of lives in the developing world in the process. As a result, the World Health Organisation moved from treatment to elimination of River Blindness which afflicted much of Sub-Saharan Africa.

Prof Campbell, who is from Ramelton, Co Donegal, won Nobel Prize with others in 2015 when aged 85 and well into an enjoyable retirement.

His early education was in the converted attic of his home. His father, a local shopkeeper, employed a live-in tutor. He later attended Campbell College near Belfast and studied natural sciences at Trinity College.

The town had planned to unveil a life-size bronze statue of him by sculptor Paul Ferriter this weekend but this had to be postponed due to Covid-19. A local committee has decided instead to send him a virtual birthday present, according to Jean Winston who is helping to compile the digital gift.

It will include music and song; a poem by Denise Blake, a birthday card created by artist Laura Buchanan and a message from Minister for Education Joe McHugh, a fellow Donegal manwho has described the parasitologist as one of the most inspirational people on the planet, who has arguably done more for humanity than any other Irish person.

On Sunday evening, the RIA and the RDS will present Catching the Worm a filmed podcast William C Campbell in conversation with Prof Luke ONeill of Trinity College and Dr Claire OConnell who wrote the book with the Nobel laureate at 8pm via ria.ie/catchingtheworm

Prof Campbell said he was sorry he could not be in Ireland as planned but that he would be having a wonderful time of togetherness with his family.

In the podcast, he makes a strong plea for risk-taking and empirical research, especially in the search for new drugs, rather than the current scenario of using molecular biology to design medications.

There should be a place for chance discovery, he added, and advised young scientists to retain curiosity, exploration and a sense of adventure during their careers. Being first to do something, that is perfectly valid, he added.

WHOOP Goes The PGA Tour – SCOREGolf

The five-time PGA Tour winner negative upon his arrival at the golf course tested positive following his opening round 74 at Hilton Head. He withdrew, then immediately went into quarantine as mandated by the tours coronavirus health and safety protocol.

Watney will do so until next week. Once out of isolation he requires two negative tests to return to the golf course.

Ive been wearing a Whoop strap for more than a year now and Ive learned to read and understand the data, Watney said. On Friday morning of the RBC Heritage I saw my respiratory rate had spiked on Thursday night. This was consistent with information shared by the Whoop community, that is could be an early indication of Covid-19. This alerted me to ask the PGA Tour for a test even though I didnt have any other symptoms, and I unfortunately tested positive. Im very grateful to have identified these signs early enough and I am now following PGA Tour protocol.

Misery, as they say, tends to love company. It comes as no surprise that Watney no longer is a single on the quarantine sidelines. Cameron Champ and tour caddies Ken Comboy and Ricky Elliott, regular loopers for Graeme McDowell and Brooks Koepka respectively, tested positive this week. Both players withdrew from the Travelers as a precaution, as did Webb Simpson. The RBC Heritage champion WDd upon learning of a positive test within his family.

And Friday the hits kept coming. Denny McCarthy became the latest casualty. The 2018 Web.com Tour Championship winner tested positive prior to his second round at Travelers. One of his playing partners, Bud Cauley, withdrew out of precaution, while the other, Matt Wallace, played as a single Friday.

Before leaving Wednesday on a 17-hour sojourn home to Orlando by car (to avoid air travel), McDowells assessment of the virus at the Travelers was short but telling.

The snowball is getting a little bit bigger, he told the Associated Press.

Something similar could be said about Whoop. An unintended beneficiary of circumstance, exposure of the brand during the past week has grown to an unprecedented level.

Multiple positive tests, coupled with validation by endorsers/users like Rory McIlroy, Justin Thomas and Scott Stallings, prompted the PGA Tour to align with Whoop. An order for 1,000 of the fitness bands was placed with the Boston, Mass.-headquartered company and delivered Wednesday at the Travelers.Korn Ferry Tour and PGA Tour Champions players, plus caddies and essential staff on those circuits, will also be sent the Whoop strap. No details of the arrangement were announced. Whoop users must pay a monthly membership fee to utilize the bands technology.

We are rapidly onboarding everyone in the PGA Tour universe as of yesterday and respect the measures that they are taking to keep the tour safe, Will Ahmed, company founder and chief executive, posted on Twitter Wednesday.

Waiting in prospect is the possibility of an extended reach into other professional sports. Watneys positive test is certainly quite a sales pitch. And with the NBA, NHL, MLB and other major professional sports organizations continuing to monitor the PGA Tours return to work as they prepare to do the same next month Whoop technology applications are bound to be considered.

We believe that the data were collecting on athletes is unprecedented, both in its sophistication and scale, said Ahmed in a company generated release. No physiological studies have ever occurred on this magnitude. Whoop benefits from the fact athletes also have tangible performance data (wins/losses, batting average, time trials, etc.) across sports. We want to share this data. There is an unbelievable correlation between physiology and performance; the approach to health monitoring and the different ways to interpret or action your bodys feedback.

Stallings brought Whoop to my attention during a conversation at last years RBC Canadian Open at Hamilton G&CC.

I was complimenting the three-time tour winner on his weight loss turns out it was 50 pounds when the longtime Titleist brand ambassador explained the devices role in helping him in his quest for better health.

The technology, man, its crazy, he said. It keeps me on track. But it also has all kinds of health and fitness data on how Im sleeping, training, recovering from workouts, my peak performance efficiencies. Its made me accountable. I love it.

Not in the field at the Travelers, Adam Hadwin has yet to receive his band. The 2017 Valspar champion is still getting up to speed on the Whoop technology and its capabilities but he was quick to credit the tour for the initiative.

If there is even a chance it could help, it makes sense that the tour has stepped up and is trying to protect its players, he said in a note. I cant speak to the legitimacy of the claims, but with us travelling constantly, city-to-city, its worth using anything that may help show exposure.

Hadwin is right. Having Whoop on board the PGA Tours road show wont stop positive tests for coronavirus from happening. What the health and wellness fitness band can do is help keep it from spreading.

2020 Naughton awardees announced // Naughton Fellowships // University of Notre Dame – ND Newswire

Twenty-three students and faculty have been announced as awardees of the Naughton Fellowships for 2020.

The mission of the fellowships, which were founded in 2008 with a gift from the Naughton family, is to facilitate broad cross-cultural training for exceptional students with leadership potential in STEM fields, stimulate collaborative research among the engineers and scientists who train these students, and forge deeper and stronger ties between Ireland and the U.S.

Unfortunately, due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, many of this years awardees have been impacted by travel restrictions. Speaking about this unprecedented year and its impact on the fellows, Brian Baker, Rev. John A. Zahm Professor of Structural Biology and director of the Naughton Fellowships, said, Although this years fellowships look quite different than in the past, we are proud of our students and scholars and the work they are doing to advance STEM discoveries in their respective fields. We are so very thankful to the Naughton family for their continued support of this program, especially during these challenging days.

The 2020 Naughton Fellowship awardees are as follows:

Faculty

For the first time, faculty have been awarded Naughton Fellowships through the Faculty Research Accelerator program. The mission of the program is to catalyze and support collaborations at the leading research universities of Ireland and the University of Notre Dame in order to foster deeper and stronger ties between both the institutions and the two countries.

The five inaugural awardees are:

Kyle Bibby and Matt Champion of the University of Notre Dame, together with Colin Hill of University College Cork (UCC), for a project entitled, Capillary zone electrophoresis (CZE) to improve virome resolution.

Laoise McNamara of the National University of Ireland, Galway (NUIG), together with Glen Nieber of Notre Dame, for a project aiming to identify biomechanical cues in bone, which affect metastatic tumor growth for the identification of potential biological or mechanical means to prevent or reverse metastatic bone disease.

Due to the ongoing challenges of the coronavirus pandemic and related travel restrictions, it is anticipated that in-person, collaborative research will be delayed for the immediate future.

Masters

Aisling Cahill, who has an electronic and computer engineering degree from NUIG, will complete the Engineering, Science, and Technology Entrepreneurship Excellence Masters (ESTEEM) program at Notre Dame.

Harry Crowley, who holds both bachelors and masters degrees from Trinity College Dublin (TCD) in mechanical engineering, will complete the ESTEEM program at Notre Dame.

Cara Fitzpatrick, a Notre Dame pre-professional studies and psychology major, will complete a masters degree in biomedical sciences in neuroscience at NUIG.

Mary Glass, a neuroscience and behavior major at Notre Dame, will complete a masters degree in clinical neuroscience at NUIG.

Alannah Hill, a UCC graduate in process and chemical engineering, will complete the ESTEEM program at Notre Dame.

Shay OMalley, a biomedical engineering graduate from NUIG will complete the ESTEEM program at Notre Dame.

Gemma Stanton, a Notre Dame civil engineering major, will complete a master of engineering and science in water, waste, and environment at University College Dublin (UCD).

Vy Sanders, a neuroscience and behavior major at Notre Dame, will complete a master of science in cognitive science at UCD.

While the coronavirus pandemic continues, it is anticipated that all selected students will attend their individual programs either in person or remotely depending on what their relevant universities require.

Undergraduate

This year, 10 undergraduate students were awarded summer fellowships to complete a Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) program, either in Ireland or at Notre Dame. Unfortunately, due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, these programs were unable to proceed.

However, the names of the students who were awarded these fellowships are as follows:

From Notre Dame

Joseph Dragonjac

Claire King

Christina Minetos

Nora Nelson

Margaret Roccato

John Sayut

John Swift

Jack Walsh

From Ireland

Tadhg Crowley

Oran McElligott

Speaking about the cancellations of the REU Program, Baker said, For those students who had their research experiences abroad cancelled, we commend them for the grace with which they handled this disappointment. We hope that this is not the end of the road for their Naughton Fellowship experiences and we encourage them to consider the program again in the future.

The Naughton Fellowship Program allows students with a background in, or aptitude for, STEM fields to experience international research and educational opportunities through a funded exchange program involving the University of Notre Dame and some of Irelands leading research universities. Irish undergraduates, Masters students, and Ph.D. candidates can come to Notre Dame on the fellowship, while Notre Dame undergraduates, masters students, and Ph.D. candidates can travel to Ireland to study and complete research.

Princeton to remove Woodrow Wilson’s name from school, citing his ‘racist thinking and policies’ – NBC News

Princeton University's board has voted to remove the name of former U.S. President Woodrow Wilson from the university's prestigious School of Public and International Affairs due to his "racist thinking and policies."

Friday's statement by the board of trustees was shared with the Princeton community by Princeton President Christopher L. Eisgruber.

"On my recommendation, the board voted to change the names of both the School of Public and International Affairs and Wilson College," Eisgruber wrote. "As you will see from the boards statement, the trustees concluded that Woodrow Wilsons racist thinking and policies make him an inappropriate namesake for a school or college whose scholars, students, and alumni must stand firmly against racism in all its forms."

The board had previously considered removing Wilson's name in 2016 after a group of student activists occupied the university president's office months earlier, Eisgruber noted.

But a review committee chose to keep the name, recommending instead a "number of reforms to make this University more inclusive and more honest about its history," the president said in his email Saturday.

The decision to reconsider came in the wake of deaths of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery and Rayshard Brooks, which have sparked nationwide protests.

The Morning Rundown

Get a head start on the morning's top stories.

What was Wilson College will now be called First College, while the public affairs school will be known as The Princeton School of Public and International Affairs.

"Wilsons racism was significant and consequential even by the standards of his own time. He segregated the federal civil service after it had been racially integrated for decades, thereby taking America backward in its pursuit of justice. He not only acquiesced in but added to the persistent practice of racism in this country, a practice that continues to do harm today," the president wrote.

The university had already planned to close Wilson College and retire the name as it builds two new residential colleges but decided the course of action would be to accelerate the retirement of the name.

Presidential historian Michael Beschloss wrote on Twitter that "Princeton is doing the right thing by firmly separating itself from the Woodrow Wilson legacy."

In a second tweet, he posted a screenshot of a quote from the racist film, "Birth of a Nation," in which Wilson praised the Ku Klux Klan.

Sam Wang, a professor of neuroscience at the university, also praised the decision as did several students.

"He was a consequential figure in our nation's history and in building Princeton University. But his racism, unacceptable even during his lifetime, was too much," Wang tweeted.

Chaya Crowder, a doctoral candidate at the university, wrote on Twitter that the renaming is "a product of years of dedicated organizing by students activists."

"It took too long and is absolutely the [bare] minimum, but the removal of the woodrow wilson name is a direct result of the work of the BJL," student Josiah Gouker posted, referring to the student activist organization the Black Justice League.

"We need to continue that work," Gouker tweeted.

Insights & Outcomes: Exosomes, a drug-coated balloon, and new info on AMOC – Yale News

This month, Insights & Outcomes gets into the flow of Yale research from the movement of RNA within the human body to the circulation of water in the Atlantic Ocean.

As always, you can find more science and medicine research news on theScience & TechnologyandHealth & Medicinepages on YaleNews.

Scientists have emphasized that engineering artificial nanoparticles is the best way to deliver potential therapeutic genetic information into cells. However, in a recently published essay, Yale immunologistDr. Philip Askenaseargues that a better therapeutic vehicle has existedsince the dawn of evolution. Exosomes are natural, tiny lipid sacs that act like couriers, ferrying tiny sequences of RNA called microRNA to and from cells throughout the body. They are secreted by all cells in all animals. Once they enter the recipient cell, they are able to alter the behavior of genes that carry out lifes functions. Exosomes have many advantages over artificial nanoparticles as potential therapeutics, Askenase said. They are naturally able to pass through the blood-brain barrier, are not targeted by the immune system, and are extremely hardy, with a long evolutionary heritage. Exosomes have great value in developing targeted gene therapies to treat a host of diseases, Askenase said. The essay appears June 18 in the journal Nature Outlook.

Climate scientists are drawing ever closer to understanding the effects of a warming climate on the Atlantic meridional overturning circulation (AMOC) the Atlantic Oceans main water circulation system. AMOC operates like a conveyor belt, bringing warm water to the North Atlantic via an upper limb and sending colder water south via a deeper limb. Over the past 15 years, there have been signs that AMOC is slowing down, and an area of cooler, non-warming water has developed in the North Atlantic. A new study suggests that this hole of non-warming water may be linked to climate change and a slowing AMOC. We have developed a new method to isolate the climatic impacts of the weakening AMOC, said Yale professor of geology and geophysicsAlexey Fedorov, co-author of the new study. We compare our global warming simulations of a constant AMOC with simulations that have a declining AMOC. Fedorov said when there is an active AMOC system in place, the non-warming hole in the North Atlantic disappears. The first author of the study is former Yale postdoctoral associateWei Liu, who is now at the University of California-Riverside. The study appears in Science Advances.

The brain is a particularly difficult and complex organ to study, but it has become more accessible thanks to a new technique developed by Yale neuroscientists. Researchers often use recombinant viruses to replace or alter genes in animals in order to study the genes effects on the development of diseases. However, it is quite expensive, and it often takes years to develop strains of genetically modified animals. The introduction of recombinant viruses into the brains of animals has also proven to be difficult and inefficient, making it unsuitable to study early genetic origins of autism, epilepsy, and schizophrenia, for instance. A Yale team led byAli Hamodi, a postdoctoral fellow in neuroscience, developed a new method that eliminates these obstacles. When injected into a newborn rodents brain blood vessel known as the transverse sinus, the recombinant virus immediately allows researchers to study the effects of genes throughout the entire brain. It enables you to create genetically modified animals, without the time, effort, and cost spent breeding genetically modified animals, Hamodi said. The study appears in the journal eLife.

The Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) has awarded a $2.5 million, five-year grant to expand Yales Addiction Medicine and Addiction Psychiatry Fellowship Programs. The grant will allow Yale School of Medicine to increase the number of board-eligible Addiction Medicine and Addiction Psychiatry fellows who graduate from Yales addiction-training programs each year, expand relationships with community treatment facilities, and further develop and recruit faculty clinician educators. There are still shortages of physicians trained to treat addictive disorders, saidDr. Ismene Petrakis, professor of psychiatry at Yale and chief of psychiatry at the VA Connecticut Healthcare system. Those shortages particularly affect underserved populations. This grant will allow us to increase the number of trainees, prioritize placements in community programs, and encourage physicians to pursue careers in addiction treatment within community settings.Dr. Jeanette Tetrault, associate professor of medicine (generalmedicine) and associate director for training and education for the Program in Addiction Medicine, directs the Addiction Medicine Fellowship. With resources from HRSA, we can markedly expand our reach, she said. Additionally, by training fellows in community settings, we will prepare fellows to work where treatment is needed most. The grant builds on collaborative efforts of Yale Medicine and Yale Psychiatry to treat addiction holistically, working closely with community partners such as Connecticut Mental Health Center, the APT Foundation, and federally qualified health centers. Special emphasis will be placed on training in telehealth services.

Although health care reform in China has pumped additional money into that countrys primary health care system and led to improvements in health care policies, medical researchers say wide gaps in the quality of primary health care still exist. YalesDr. Harlan Krumholz, the Harold H. Hines Jr. Professor of Medicine (cardiology) and Public Health, and director of the Center for Outcomes Research and Evaluation, is co-lead author of a new review that offers sweeping recommendations to raise the quality of primary health care in China. Among the recommendations are better training and education of medical workers, integration of clinical care and public health services, the establishment of performance standards and accountability, and more active use of digital platforms for quality control and training. The article appears in The Lancet.

Peripheral artery disease (PAD), the progressive narrowing of blood vessels away from the heart or brain that reduces blood flow to the limbs, affects more than 8.5 million Americans. The femoropopliteal artery, located in the leg, is a common site for PAD and doctors currently have several endovascular options for treatment. A new, Yale-led review of those treatment options suggests that one is most preferable: a drug-coated balloon that is inserted in the leg, advanced to the narrowed area, and inflated. The authors, led by associate professor of medicine (cardiology)Dr. Carlos Mana-Hurtado, noted the safety profile, ease of use, and clinical efficacy of the drug-coated balloon procedure. The study appears in Expert Review of Medical Devices.
