Major depressive disorder (also known as clinical depression, major depression, unipolar depression, or unipolar disorder) is a mental disorder typically characterized by a pervasive low mood, low self-esteem, and loss of interest or pleasure in usual activities. The term was selected by the American Psychiatric Association for the 1980 version of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-III) classification for the symptom cluster, and has become widely used since. The general term depression is often used to describe the disorder, but since it is also used to describe temporary sadness or a depressed mood, more precise terminology is preferred in clinical use and research. Major depression is an often disabling condition which adversely affects a person's family, work or school life, sleeping and eating habits, and general health. In the United States around 3.4% of people with major depression commit suicide, and up to 60% of all people who commit suicide have depression or another mood disorder.

The diagnosis of major depressive disorder is based on the patient's self-reported experiences, behavior reported by relatives or friends, and mental state. There is no laboratory test for major depression, although physicians generally request tests for physical conditions that may cause similar symptoms. The most common time of onset is between the ages of 30 and 40 years, with a later peak between 50 and 60 years. Major depression occurs about twice as frequently in women as in men, although men are at higher risk for suicide.

Most patients are treated in the community with antidepressant medication and supportive counseling, and some with psychotherapy. Admission to hospital may be necessary in cases associated with self-neglect or a significant risk of harm to self or others. A minority with severe illness may be treated with electroconvulsive therapy (ECT), under a short-acting general anaesthetic. The course of the disorder varies widely, from a once-only occurrence lasting months to a lifelong disorder with recurrent major depressive episodes. Depressed individuals have a shorter life expectancy than those without depression, being more susceptible to medical conditions such as heart disease. Sufferers and former patients may be stigmatized.

The understanding of the nature and causes of depression has evolved over the centuries; nevertheless, many aspects of depression are still not fully understood, and are the subject of debate and research. Psychological, psycho-social, evolutionary and biological causes have been proposed. Psychological treatments are based on theories about personality, interpersonal communication, and unduly negative thoughts. The monoamine chemicals serotonin, norepinephrine, and dopamine are naturally present in the brain and assist communication between nerve cells. Monoamines have been implicated in depression, and most antidepressants work to increase the active levels of at least one.

The neuroscience major at Drew is a multidisciplinary program of study that allows students to explore the brain from the perspectives of many different disciplines, including anthropology, biology, chemistry, computer science, mathematics, physics, philosophy and psychology. After building a firm background in biology, psychology and chemistry, majors study neuroscience topics at more advanced levels. In biology, students tease apart the function of genes and molecules in the brain, investigate how neurons connect with each other in physiological systems and networks that provide the physical substrate for both our conscious and subconscious experiences, and explore animal behavior from an evolutionary viewpoint. In psychology, students look at the anatomical basis of behavior, and examine the data and theory of learning, memory, sensation, perception, language, motivation, reasoning, and creativity.

Explore the pharmacology of drugs designed to treat mental illnesses. Examine how a machine can be programmed to be able to process language and engage in visual perception in a computer science course.

One area of strength in Drews neuroscience program is its employment of laboratory and research experiences. Drews technologically sophisticated neuroscience laboratories are designed to give students broad access to applied experiences in studying the brain. All majors take laboratory courses in which they image live neurons with fluorescent microscopy, measure brain chemicals in animals, and examine changes in brain morphology due to drug exposure, and use computers to study neuroanatomy and neurophysiology and for data collection, statistical analysis and graphic presentations.

All members of the Neuroscience Program have active research programs and work with students on research projects throughout the year.

Neuroscience – College of Arts and Sciences

Neuroscience is the study of the nervous system (i.e., brain, spinal cord and peripheral nerves), the mechanisms of behavior, and the nature of mind and consciousness. Neuroscience is an interdisciplinary field that draws from a number of scientific disciplines including medicine, biological sciences, psychology, physics, chemistry, mathematics and engineering, and beyond with the nervous system serving as the common focus. Neuroscience is one of the most rapidly advancing fields of research and training. At the University of Miami, over 50 faculty members from 13 departments on three campuses participate in undergraduate, graduate and postdoctoral training. They engage in neuroscience research that accounts for more than 20% of the Universitys federally sponsored research dollars. While the home of the major is in the College of Arts & Sciences, the teaching faculty and Steering Committee come from several schools, including the Miller School of Medicine. The College of Arts & Sciences Department of biology and psychology are home to many of our faculty as well.

The human brain is a new frontier we've only begun to chart. Students pursuing the Neuroscience major in the Biological Foundations of Behavior program at Franklin & Marshall have the opportunity to significantly contribute to our understanding of the nervous system and behavior.

In close collaboration with the faculty - dedicated teachers and active researchers - Neuroscience students study the nervous system across multiple levels of analysis, from molecules to the behavior of organisms.

Neuroscience majors collaborate in the design, execution, and presentation of research projects and advance to long-term student/faculty collaboration on projects that are funded by federal research grants. These experiences often result in students presenting their results at national meetings of professional societies in neuroscience and co-authorship in prestigious journal publications.
