Movie review: Lush horror-thriller Sputnik imagines what happens when an alien makes its way to Earth – Daytona Beach News-Journal

The DNA of Alien is all over Egor Abramenkos directorial debut, the Russian Soviet-era horror/sci-fi film Sputnik. Fortunately, this offspring of Ridley Scotts classic is very much its own slick, engaging psychological horror-thriller, anchored by a strong lead performance by Oksana Akinshina.

Based on Abramenkos short film The Passenger, the film, written by Oleg Malovichko and Andrei Zolotarev, imagines what happens after most sci-fi films end. In the Alien franchise, Ripley spends most of her energy making sure aliens dont make their way to Earth. But what happens if one does? How would the Soviet superpower embroiled in a space race handle the situation if they sent two into space and came back with three?

This mystery unfolds from the perspective of Tatiana (Akinshina), a brilliant doctor interested in the field of neuropsychiatry, who has been disciplined for her extreme methods to produce results in her patients. This catches the attention of Semiradov (Fedor Bondarchuk), a mysterious military man who needs her help with a recently returned amnesiac cosmonaut, Konstantin (Pyotr Fyodorov), being held at a research facility in Kazakhstan. What Tatiana finds when she arrives at the facility is a charming cosmonaut, irritated at being held for tests, whose gory secret, buried under layers of bureaucracy, only comes out at night.

With her steely exterior and empathetic superpowers, Tatiana falls into the canon of sci-fi heroines like Ripley, of course, but also Lindsey Brigman in The Abyss, Louise Banks in Arrival, even with shades of Clarice Starling in Silence of the Lambs. Although these are all beloved cinematic heroines, and Akinshina is fantastic carrying and grounding the film as the brave Tatiana, the trope is a bit overdone at this point, and the script does not stray from this rather stereotypical characterization.

However, there is so much to admire about Sputnik, with its immersive, eye-catching production design by Marina Slavina and stylish cinematography by Maxim Zhukov (the film was shot on location at the Institute of Biochemistry of the Russian Academy of Sciences in Moscow). Its the kind of film you cant look away from, thanks to the lush look and performances, particularly by Akinshina and Fyodorov. The creature design and execution is also particularly impressive.

Everything is so perfectly placed that its jarring when Abramenko loses control over the tone, particularly in transitions where tightly wound lab scenes stumble into soaring drone shots soundtracked to an intense yet generic-sounding score, which feels like different films mashed together. The genre swerves from sci-fi to horror to psychological thriller to melodrama, but in a way, it works. Its clear Abramenko wants to serve a whole full meal of movie, and in stretching the dynamic range of emotion he does hit on moments that are at times operatic or somewhat soapy. But in doing so, brings a new layer of story that makes Sputnik feel epic.

That play with genre is what makes this film so compelling. It starts out paying homage to its classical science fiction roots, but goes its own way, layering on melodrama and social and political commentary unique to its Russian setting and history. Yet its open-ended enough to be the kind of choose-you-own metaphor that that the best kind of sci-fi always is. Give Sputnik a whirl, and it just might take over.

New NSF Grant Awarded to Hendrix Biology Professor Duina – Hendrix College Events and News

CONWAY, Ark. (August13, 2020) Dr. Andrea Duina, a professor of biology and chair of the biochemistry-molecularbiology program at Hendrix College, has received a three-year, $480,000 grantfrom the National Science Foundation (NSF) that will help undergraduatestudents gain new insights into some of the fundamental mechanisms thatregulate how genes are utilized by cells. This grant is the latest in a seriesof NSF grants awarded to Duina for research that increases the scientificcommunitys understanding of life beginning at the cellular level.

Since propergene regulation is essential for most cellular and organismal functions, thesestudies address questions with far-ranging implications, Duina said. For ourstudies, we use the budding yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae as the modelsystem, and given the high degree of functional conservation across all life forms,findings from these studies will shed new light into processes relevant to allorganisms, including humans.

This grant, oneof five received by Duina from the NSF for undergraduate research in his lab at Hendrix,will provide more opportunities for Hendrix students to carry out cutting-edgeresearch.

Students willfurther develop their skills in various aspects of the scientific process,including experimental design and execution, data interpretation andevaluation, science communication to other scientists and to the generalpublic, and critical evaluation of current research literature, Duina said.

In addition tothe grants direct benefit to students who conduct research in Duinaslaboratory, it will have an expanded impact at Hendrix through the elements ofthis project that Duina plans to incorporate into some of the courses he teaches.

This NSF grantalso stands as a testament to Hendrixs strong commitment in promotingstate-of-the art STEM undergraduate research on campus, he said. Hendrix canbe proud of its role in developing well-rounded and well-prepared scientists.

UM Sophomore and Her Steeds Stealing Shows – Ole Miss News – Ole Miss News

OXFORD, Miss. Since she was 7, Suzanne Crull has loved horses and horseback riding. As a young adult, the University of Mississippi sophomore and her steeds have become prize-winning regulars in regional and national Arabian Horse Association competitions.

The Arabian horse is a breed that originated on the Arabian Peninsula. With a distinctive head shape and high tail carriage, the Arabian is one of the most recognizable and oldest horse breeds in the world.

A biochemistry major from Magnolia, Texas, Crull owns three purebred Arabians. Ready Aim Afire J, whose barn name is Red, is her show horse. Her other steeds names are Valmont and OH Arise.

I find being able to just ride and show my horse to be the most enjoyable part (of competing), Crull said. It is very fulfilling and gratifying to have a class where there are no major mistakes and have it be a clean ride in general.

Getting a ribbon is always fun, but just the ability to go into a class and show off my horse is what makes it worth it to me, even if I dont necessarily win.

Crull is a third-generation Ole Miss student. Both her grandparents and her father graduated from the university and her older sister, Allison, is a junior linguistics major.

My connection to the school was one of the main reasons I chose it, Crull said. And I knew I would have my sister close by.

The AHA offers more than 500 competitions for Arabian purebreds; Half-Arabians, which must have at least 50 percent Arabian blood and one purebred Arabian parent; and Anglo-Arabian horses, which require a minimum of 25 percent and no more than 75 percent blood from each breed.

The competitions range from grassroots schooling shows local achievement events that qualify riders for regional and national contests to national championships which include Youth Nationals, Canadian Nationals, Sport Horse Nationals, Distance Nationals and U.S. Nationals and distance rides, multiday events that test a horses condition and stamina, rider intelligence and horsemanship under veterinary supervision on a cross-country trail.

I have gone to Arabian Youth Nationals in Oklahoma City for the past three years and Region 9 in Fort Worth, Texas, for the past two years, Crull said. I enjoy spending time at them and competing with my horses. My love of horses and the sport has been what keeps pushing me to be better.

When shes on campus, Crull cant ride, but her horses continue training in Texas. When home, Crull rides two to four times a week. She has been able to increase her riding time during the COVID-19 pandemic.

While home, Ive been able to manage both my schoolwork and going to the barn by dedicating a certain amount of time each day to those activities, she said. This year, I most likely will have to pick and choose which qualifying and regional shows I go to in order to not have a conflict with school.

Because Crull holds an amateur card, she has competed only in the Junior to Ride, for all riders ages 14-18; Junior Owner to Ride, for owners 18 and under; Amateur to Ride, all ages 18 holding an amateur card; and the Arabian, Half-Arabian and Anglo-Arabian horse categories. Crull and her steeds have swept several divisions, including:

At Youth Nationals, Crull placed in the Top 10 Arabian Mounted Native Costume in 2019 and Top 10 in Arabian English Ladies Side Saddle in 2020.

In this years Region 9 competition, Crull won Reserve Champion in Arabian Show Hack, among several other categories in which she placed in the Top 5.

Casey Goslin, Crulls trainer, said she has greatly improved over the past two years of training with him.

When Suzanne came to me, she was a fair rider and very shy, Goslin said. Over the years, she has become an excellent rider who is much more outgoing and confident. She didnt know how to ride side saddle very well when she started, but shes really good at it now.

As Crull ages out of the youth category and enters adult competitions, she plans to bring at least two horses to next years nationals.

I just bought OH Arise in order to compete next year in either English Pleasure or Country English Pleasure at the 2021 youth national, Crull said. I hope that my education from Ole Miss will allow me to continue to support my participation with horses and in the Arabian show world.

Crull is the type of student who is a pleasure to have in a class, said Gerald Rowland, instructional associate professor of chemistry and biochemistry.

Suzanne is intelligent, motivated and hard-working, Rowland said. She would always take the time to help her classmates during in-class assignments. She is a very caring person that is a pleasure to be around.

Gene yields insights into the causes of neurodegeneration | Cornell Chronicle – Cornell Chronicle

Across the globe, approximately 50 million people are living with dementia. The two most common forms are Alzheimers disease and frontotemporal lobar degeneration (FTLD), which develop when neurons in specific parts of the brain stop functioning triggering memory loss and other behavioral or personality changes.

Without a cure, the World Health Organization predicts that number could rise by as many as 10 million cases per year. However, predicting the onset of these diseases is tricky because neurodegeneration can start years before people present any outward symptoms.

An electron microscope shows the myelin sheath in a healthy mouse brain. The myelins fatty tissue insulates neurons and protects them from damage.

Cornell researchers including Fenghua Hu, associate professor in the Department of Molecular Biology and Genetics and member of the Weill Institute for Cell and Molecular Biology, are taking a closer look at the factors that cause Alzheimers, FTLD and similar diseases. Hus latest study, A role of the frontotemporal lobar degeneration risk factor TMEM106B in myelination, was published June 23 in the journal Brain.

I want to have a better understanding of the molecular and cellular mechanisms of neurodegeneration, Hu said. I hope that our research can facilitate therapeutic development of treatment options for patients suffering from neurodegenerative diseases and other brain disorders.

Her team started by investigating a specific gene, called TMEM106B, which had been previously identified as a risk factor for several neurodegenerative diseases, including Alzheimers and FTLD. Researchers also knew that a particular mutation in that gene caused a neurological defect known as hypomyelinating leukodystrophy, which creates a myelin deficit in the brain, leading to the deterioration of both motor skills and mental acuity.

Myelin is the fatty tissue that wraps around nerve fibers, or axons, in the nervous system. Like insulation, this tissue forms a sheath that surrounds the nerve fibers, protecting them from damage and allowing electrical impulses to be quickly transmitted along the nerve.

Hu wanted to see exactly how that one mutation in TMEM106B could cause so much damage. She also wanted to learn more about how the gene regulates the formation and maintenance of the myelin sheath under normal conditions.

We found that the mutation associated with the disease is a loss-of-function mutation, Hu said.

This distinction is critical since the Hu lab saw that TMEM106B is expressed in the cells that are responsible for forming the protective myelin tissue. Those cells are called oligodendrocytes, and within them, TMEM106B resides in the lysosome a tiny organelle that acts as a cellular recycling center.

Like the stomach, the lysosome must maintain a specific pH to keep its enzymes active. As oligodendrocytes build the myelin sheath, lysosomes remove any extraneous materials. They can also store myelins main membrane protein and deposit it in areas surrounding the nerve fibers.

Hus team discovered that the TMEM106B mutation prevented the gene from regulating both the pH inside the lysosome and the movement of the lysosome itself inhibiting the oligodendrocytes ability to build compact myelin layers.

Using a mouse model, Hu also noticed that an overall TMEM106B deficiency led to abnormal lysosome movement within the oligodendrocytes. This created defects in the myelin sheath, and the team observed behavioral changes, including poor motor coordination.

Additional research will examine the exact mechanism by which TMEM106B regulates lysosome function and will demonstrate how the mutation leads to the known neurological defects.

We want to explore whether the genes regulation of myelination contributes to its association with neurodegenerative diseases, including Alzheimers, FTLD and other age-related dementia, Hu said.

First author on the paper is postdoctoral associate Tuancheng Feng, and co-authors include other members of the Hu lab: Rory Sheng 19, Mohammed Ullah 21, Christina Mendoza 19, Isabel Iscol Katz 21, Daniel Paushter, Ph.D. 18, Peter Sullivan, Ph.D. 17, lab technician Xiaochun Wu, and former students Xiaolai Zhou and Laura Camila Martinez Enriquez.

Collaborators also include Fred Maxfield, professor in the Department of Biochemistry at Weill Cornell Medicine, and his research associate Santiago Domenech.

Hu received funding from the Bluefield project to cure frontotemporal dementia, National Institute on Aging, and National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke.

To the Editor:In February, I had a private meeting with City Councillor Michelle Wu in her office along with my former principal and current staff member at Roxbury Prep High School. We were there to ask that my school, Roxbury Prep, be treated fairly. For 400 days, my school has waited to be placed on the Boston Planning & Development Agency (BPDA) agenda for a vote on a project for a new high school at 361 Belgrade Ave. in Roslindale, a site that is already zoned for a school.

For the past several years, my peers in 11thand 12thgrade have been separated from 9thand 10thgraders. We didnt have a cafeteria or updated science labs. We ate lunch at our desks and walked a mile to theYfor gym. Meanwhile, 361 Belgrade continues to stand as an unused automotive service center instead of a beautiful public high school for beautiful Black and Latinx children.

I am grateful that many elected officials of color have already taken a position of support for our cause. I wanted Councillor Wu to do so as well. She lives in Roslindale, where our proposed school would be. We appealed to her for help. I was surprised by what she told me in that meeting in February.

She told us: You have been mistreated. You have been made to go on a wild goose chase. The reason you have not been placed on the agenda stems from racism. And then she told us that she would remain silent on this injustice.

She doesnt want to see a school at that site, even though it is zoned for a school. This is fine. Everyone is entitled to theiropinion. What is disheartening is that the councillor declined to call out the injustice in her own community, in her own back yard.

I just graduated from high school. Im headed to Brown University on a full scholarship to study biochemistry, despite the fact that our inadequate school building didnt have the type of lab that my new peers at Brown would have had. But my siblings are in middle school at Roxbury Prep. They deserve the new high school that my peers and I deserved and didnt get.

The world is different today than it was in February. Many people are recognizing that silence from good people is a tool of oppressors, allowing people to easily ignore the problem at hand. Councillor Wu wrote in her email to supporters recently: Black Lives Matter. And we must all use every platform and lever of power to confront racism in our lives, laws, and institutions.

She added: To move forward, the question for every elected official should not be whether we can point to some work to address racism, but whether we are taking all possible action within our power to implement anti-racist policies, from legislation to budgets and oversight. Hold us accountable to get it done.

I am hopeful in reading those words. Perhaps Councillor Wu now recognizes what that means to the students and families of Roxbury Prep and that she will finally make a public statement about 361 Belgrade.

New ICE rule leads to concerns about the future of Utahs international students – ABC 4

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah (ABC4 News) As the country continues to grapple with the COVID-19 pandemic, many college and university students are opting to take a full load of online classes next month. But for international students, that could mean disqualification to remain in the United States legally.

We are not sure what the rationale behind this is. But what I think as an immigration attorney is that President Trump is creating an invisible wall to keep our foreign nationals from coming or staying in the United States, said Kim Buhler-Thomas. I believe why were doing this is more of a political move so he can have a stronger backing from his constituents.

Laura Fonseca, a business major at Salt Lake Community College flew to her native country, Colombia to visit family for spring break. But due to the seriousness of the COVID-19 pandemic and travel restrictions, she hasnt been able to return to Utah.

The airports were closed and theyre still closed, she said.

Meanwhile, BYU biochemistry student Peter Liang has remained at home while taking online classes to keep his wife and baby safe.

The fear of getting COVID-19 and bringing it back to my family really weighs heavily on me on a mental level. My wife has some health concerns and if she got the virus, she could have very serious symptoms, he said.

On Monday, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) announced a new rule that requiresinternational students on an F-1 or M-1 visa to take no more than one class online at a college or university unless the course has an in-person component. Those who fail to comply could be forced to return to their native country.

The announcement left thousands of international students in Utah concerned about their health and safety during the pandemic.

I was shocked by this policy change because Ive always felt like the U.S. has been a country where humanity is one of its principal values. This policy is just so brutal towards international students. It feels like we have to choose between COVID-19 or leaving the U.S. I think its inhumane, said Liang.

Im really worried about the possibility that when school opens in the fall, were going to see a rise in cases which will force classes to move completely online again. If that happens in the middle of the semester, I would have to move back to Korea, said Jee Ha, a mechanical engineering student at the University of Utah.

The policy further complicated Mary Jantalerts situation, who explains that she already completed her Masters degree and was planning to leave the country to pursue her career before the COVID-19 pandemic hit and led to travel restrictions.

I reached out to Homeland Security and they said they were not extending their grace period so they told me to go back to school if I wanted to stay here legally, she said.

Jantalert enrolled for a software development program in the meantime at Salt Lake Community College to maintain her student status. But ICEs new rule, she says, puts her in limbo because her native country of Thailand currently has travel restrictions that would prevent her from re-entering their borders.

I feel so confused. I dont know what the benefit of this is for either side. We international students pay triple the amount of tuition that a resident student pays. So they would lose all that money if a bunch of us left, she said.

ButBuhler-Thomas said there is some hope. Harvard University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology filed a lawsuit Wednesday against the new rule.

If successful, it would institute a temporary restraining order and prevent the government from enforcing the directive. Therefore, buying time for international students who would have otherwise only have six weeks to take action.

They just have to show irreparable harm to their institution if this order is allowed to continue, she said. We would hope that this injunction would apply across the board for all schools.

Other potential barriers posed to international students may include lack of financial means to return to their native country, difficulty of transferring to another institution, lost opportunity to work in the U.S. after graduation, and emotional trauma.

I dont know how long it will be until I can return to the United States and what if I dont make it back before Fall semester to fulfill that in-person requirement? Im so stressed out and Im so sad because Im close to graduating, said Fonseca.

Buhler-Thomas said there are still many questions that remain about the new rule. Consequently, international students may have to transfer to another institution, request a visa from a third country, or risk deportation while staying in the U.S.

ABC4 News reached out to six of Utahs universities and two colleges to ask about online v. in-person class availability. Most will offer a mixture of both in the fall, but some have not made their decisions yet.

Time is not on our side because we only have a few weeks before we find out what our options are. Thats not a lot of time for someone if they have to pack up their life and move out of the country, said Jantalert.

Biochemistry delves into the chemical processes of living organisms. In other words, biochemists apply their knowledge of chemicals and perform different chemical techniques and experiments to decipher biological problems.

People who thrive on finding solutions to problems and are science-minded are a good fit for this profession. One of those people is Bruce Alberts, who grew up reading Sinclair Lewis' "Arrowsmith," a novel about a rags-to-riches American doctor who makes a great scientific discovery. "Everybody in my generation who became a scientist read 'Arrowsmith,'" Alberts laughs. "It provided an idealistic view of what our future could be like as a scientist." However, similar to the protagonist in the novel, Alberts first set out to be a doctor.

Alberts got into Harvard University and started down the premed track. He enjoyed his courses, especially physical chemistry, but he loathed the formulaic laboratory portions that accompanied them. He likened these labs more to cooking classes than to science. But one of those boring labs would forever change the course of his career.

The labs were "not even vaguely interesting," Alberts says, so during his junior year he petitioned the school to get out of all of the course labs. The school administrators rejected his petition, but they said Alberts could switch into a research lab instead. And there, among the doctoral students and post-docs who were performing experiments and completing exciting research, he found his true calling. The summer between his junior and senior year at Harvard, he worked 100-hour weeks in the research lab. And instead of applying to medical schools, he applied to Ph.D. programs.

Today, Alberts' resume could cover just about as many pages as the novel he read as a kid. Alberts' research has centered on "the functions of a set of proteins that form the protein machine that carries out chromosomal replication." He has also taught at Princeton and the University of California-San Francisco. He's co-written several iterations of well-regarded textbooks, including "Molecular Biology of the Cell" and "Essential Cell Biology." He has served as the editor-in-chief of "Science" magazine and as the president of the National Academy of Sciences. He also served as a United States Science Envoy. In 2014, President Obama awarded him the National Medal of Science.

But after all these years of important positions and accolades, his favorite part of his career is finding solutions to problems.

"Like all scientists, I get pleasure out of solving problems," Alberts says. But these days, he's concentrating on getting kids to understand and develop an interest in science. "The chemistry of life is incredibly complex. A living cell is the most amazing thing in the universe," he says. And he hopes that by creating a new curriculum, built on inquiry-based learning, which is basically getting children to ask questions of the world and answer them on their own, kids too will see the wonder and magic of science.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics projects 6.3 percent employment growth for biochemists between 2018 and 2028. In that period, an estimated 1,900 jobs should open up.
