Servoss and Thallapuranam to Jointly Serve as Co-Directors of Undergraduate Research – University of Arkansas Newswire

Shannon Servoss, associate professor of chemical engineering, and Suresh Thallapuranam, professor of biochemistry, will serve as co-directors of undergraduate research.

During the summer months, theOffice of Research and Innovation conducted an internal search to fill the position of an undergraduate research director. Out of the candidate pool, two U of A professors impressed the panel with their career experience and passion for working with undergraduate students.

Shannon Servoss, associate professor of chemical engineering, and Suresh Thallapuranam, professor of biochemistry, were offered appointments as co-directors of undergraduate research and both agreed to share the title and responsibilities thereof.

The duties of this position entail supporting undergraduate research and creative activities across academic disciplines. The two professors will report to Wesley Stites, associate vice chancellor for research and innovation. They will coordinate withHonors College and the Office of Research and Innovation to fulfill their mission. Tasks vary from year to year.

For the 2020-2021 academic school year, duties will include relaunching the undergraduate research journal, Inquiry, engaging in conversations with colleges and departments to encourage research activity among non-Honors students, and gathering regular feedback from undergraduate participants and faculty mentors about how to maintain and improve programs.

We are thrilled to have Professors Servoss and Thallapuranam to take the leadership role for UAs Undergraduate Research Office, Vice Chancellor Daniel Sui said. As research increasingly becomes an integral part of the experiential learning experience for undergraduates worldwide, I am confident Professors Servoss and Thallapuranam will work with the rest of the faculty on campus to bring UAs undergraduate research to a new level of excellence in the coming years.

Servoss and Thallapuranam will also oversee the implementation of improvements in student programs and routinely assess their effectiveness. They will also frequently communicate with theOffice for Student Success and offices of undergraduate research at peer institutions. Another item in their interest is to develop zero credit hour courses related to research methods and ethics for students not enrolled in the Honors College. The co-directors will also work with research administration staff in the tracking and tracing of funding and expenditures which support research activities at the undergraduate level.

"Even cooked carrots can trigger allergic reactions" – hortidaily.com

The consumption of raw carrots triggers allergic reactions in many people. Contrary to popular belief, cooked carrots can also have this effect. This was recently discovered by a research team at the University of Bayreuth. The carrot's allergen, Dau c 1, assumes a structure that is harmless to allergy sufferers when highly heated. However, as soon as the temperature drops, it largely regains its natural structure. The researchers present their study in the journal "Molecular Nutrition & Food Research".

"The results of our research clearly suggest that sufferers who are sensitive to the carrot allergen should generally avoid eating carrots. Heating carrots does not destroy or only incompletely destroys the protein structures that can cause allergic reactions ", says Prof. Dr. Birgitta Whrl from the Biochemistry IV research group at the University of Bayreuth. "The risk of allergy patients developing an allergic reaction arises not only when eating freshly cooked carrots or canned carrots. It also arises when carrot extract is added to food," adds Thessa Jacob M.Sc., first author of the study and PhD student at the Biochemistry IV research group.

The natural carrot allergen Dau c 1 is actually a mixture of several, structurally very similar proteins. These so-called isoallergens were produced individually in the laboratory in bacteria. Both the protein mixture of the natural Dau c 1 and the individual isoallergens were examined at temperatures up to 95 degrees Celsius to see how their structures change upon increasing and decreasing the temperature. This analysis showed that the natural mixture and almost all isoallergens are still capable of causing allergies after cooling down to 25 degrees Celsius. Despite the previous heating, antibodies present in the organism of allergy patients will still trigger allergic reactions. Although in some cases this effect is less pronounced than before heating, it is generally maintained.

"This is the first time that the Dau c 1 isoallergens have been subjected to such an extensive series of tests. The separate examination of the structurally similar molecules was particularly important to us in order to determine which of the isoallergens trigger immune reactions under the tested conditions," says Thessa Jacob M.Sc.

The tests clearly showed that the structural stability of the carrot allergen does not depend on temperature alone. Acidity, as expressed by the pH value, is also important. Of particular interest is pH value 3, which typically prevails in the stomach after food intake. At this level of acidity and at normal room temperature, at least some epitopes can continue to exist despite previous heating. Epitopes are those molecular substructures by which the immune system of allergy sufferers recognises the respective allergen, allowing an allergic reaction to occur.

In their structural investigations of the Dau c 1 isoallergens, the researchers mainly used magnetic resonance spectroscopy (NMR) and CD spectroscopy in laboratories on the Bayreuth campus. For other analytical procedures, they received support from the Paul Ehrlich Institute in Langen and from Nano Temper Technologies in Munich.

CLEMSON, S.C. When a beautiful pup has a dental problem, its time to call a veterinarian. But when it runs in the family, researchers take the case.

Clemson University researcher Leigh Anne Clark and her graduate student, Sydney Abrams, study inherited diseases in canines. They have worked previously on conditions that affect Shetland Sheepdogs, those fluffy Sheltie herding dogs that closely resemble a miniature version of Lassie. The pair collaborated on a paper titled Variants in FtsJ RNA 2-O-Methyltransferase 3 and Growth Hormone 1 are associated with small body size and a dental anomaly in dogs, which was published Sept. 21 in PNAS, the official journal of the National Academy of Sciences (NAS).

After Sheltie breeders sought answers about maxillary canine-tooth mesioversion, Clark and Abrams subsequent research led to a groundbreaking discovery.

We wanted to find the genetic basis for lance canines and ended up discovering that its related to the dogs body size, said Abrams, who is lead author on the paper. This is one of the first times a trait in dogs has been attributed directly to genes influencing growth.

The condition is known among Sheltie breeders as lance canine, added Clark, an associate professor in the College of Sciences Department of Genetics and Biochemistry. Thats because that canine tooth points forward, like a lance or spear, instead of pointing down like it should.

The tooth can be extracted or fixed with orthodontics, but that doesnt address its cause. If left untreated, it can cause ulcerations on the lip or prevent the dog from closing its mouth. It can also lead to periodontal disease.

It was having an impact on the breed because when you compete in conformation trials, the teeth are one of the things they look at, Clark said. You must have your canine tooth and it has to be pointing down otherwise, its a fault.

Dogs with lance canine can become pets, of course, but they are not shown.

If youre not shown, you are less likely to be bred, Clark said. These dogs are getting pulled from the breeding pool and youre losing genetic diversity over a crooked tooth.

Because the condition is rarely seen outside the Sheltie breed, Clark said she was sure it was heritable. Getting to its source would help breeders work toward eliminating it.

We took a genome-wide approach looking at genetic markers that span the entire genome hoping to find one or more of these markers associated with lance canine, she said.

This was no small task. Abrams began this study while she was still an undergraduate.

I started working on dental abnormalities in Shelties in 2017 as an undergraduate and received funding from the Clemson University Honors College, Abrams said. This enabled me to continue my research at a high level.

It took years to collect these samples, Clark added. Its slow and tedious to get enough samples to do these kinds of studies.

The dogs whose samples were used could not share common grandparents, so Abrams collected more than 200 samples and ultimately used 78 of those in genome-wide research.

I contacted owners from all over the world to collect the samples, said Abrams, who received her Bachelor of Science in genetics in 2019 before joining Clarks laboratory as a graduate student. I even got to present a portion of this work at a canine and feline genetics conference in Bern (Switzerland) in May 2019.

Abrams and Clarks efforts paid off in a surprising way.

We did find an association on chromosome 9, Clark said. In this region of the chromosome, there were about 30 genes. We generated sequence from a Sheltie with both canine teeth affected. We looked at those 30 genes for a variation that might have an effect. We found two variations in two different genes that looked like they could be problematic. One of the genes was growth hormone.

Because that gene is necessary for normal growth, Clark and Abrams went back to the study population and asked the owners to submit their dogs height and weight.

What we discovered is that dogs with lance canine are, on average, one inch shorter and six pounds lighter than unaffected Shetland Sheepdogs, Clark said.

And in a small breed that averages about 20 pounds and is 13 to 16 inches at the shoulder, this variation is significant.

Nobody had noticed before, Clark said.

But owners quickly had an aha moment as they made the connection.

Next, we looked at these two variations in the genomes of 224 other breeds and wild canids, Clark said. But they were only in toy breeds. They are all tiny dogs. The consequence of the growth hormone gene mutation is a mutant protein that is exactly the same as the one found in humans with pituitary dwarfism.

There is more work to be done, including exploration of why some canines are prone to missing teeth and what connection that might have to other health issues.

Missing teeth is interesting because it is in all breeds, but is more common in small breeds, Clark said. Dogs with two lance canines are significantly more likely to have missing teeth than a dog that has one lance canine. Theres some relationship there.

In addition to Abrams and Clark, other authors include Alexandra Hawks, Jacquelyn Evans and Jennifer Mason from the Clemson Universitys Department of Genetics and Biochemistry; Thomas Famula from the University of California, Davis; Mary Mahaffey from the University of Georgia; and Gary S. Johnson from the University of Missouri.

Abrams is supported by the Collie Health Foundation, and one of her latest projects is to study the genetics of epilepsy.

Anita Qualls and Aditya Wood: Feeding the Frontlines – University of Georgia

Anita Qualls and Aditya Sood dont remember when they met.

Maybe it was during a group gathering in Myers Hall, where they both lived freshman year. It could have been in one of the many biology classes they shared. Regardless of the starting point, Qualls BS 19 and Sood BS 19 both agree that they became close friends while taking an evolutionary biology course their senior year.

So in the spring, when Qualls was looking for a way to support those fighting the COVID-19 pandemic, Sood was one the first people she contacted. The nonprofit they formed has helped ease the burden of thousands of frontline workers across the state. And at a time when collaboration is more important than ever, they are helping bring the UGA community closer together.

When the pandemic hit, Sood was in his second semester of medical school at Emory. Qualls was in Cambridge, England, as UGAs first-ever Churchill Scholar. The prestigious scholarship gave her the opportunity to study immunology before entering medical school at the University of California, San Francisco this fall.

After Qualls was forced to return to the States in mid-March, she actively sought ways to contribute to the fight against COVID-19. One of the friends she reached out to was Cali Callaway BS 17, MS 17, a third-year medical student at Cornell. She was involved in an effort to deliver restaurant-made meals to health care workers around New York, called NYP Healthcare Heroes.

The concept created a partnership between the organization and local restaurants who made and then delivered fresh meals to health care workers in hospitals and medical clinics around the state. To minimize touchpoints, Feed the Frontlines volunteers arent directly involved with food preparation or delivery. Instead, they handle the logistics of connecting with health care providers and providing funding to restaurant partners.

When Qualls, who was quarantining in Hiawassee but lives in Johns Creek, learned about Feed the Frontlines, she set up a similar effort in Athens. But she didnt want to stop there, so she contacted Sood, who lives in Alpharetta.

We realized there was a need, not just with healthcare workers who were struggling but also with local restaurants that had no source of income but massive rents to pay. We realized we could join these two together, not just in Athens but across all of Georgia, Sood says.

What followed was a masterclass in networking and coordination. Qualls and Sood cast a wide net and reeled in dozens of friends and acquaintances from across Georgia who, like them, were trying to figure out a way to make an impact.

Feed the Frontlines Georgia grew from four people to 80 in just two and a half weeks, and it now serves more than 40 hospitals and clinics across the state. More than 1,000 meals are delivered statewide every week. Qualls estimates that 90% of the volunteers are current UGA students or alumni.

Weve never worked on something that has been so fast paced and growing like this, she continues. Weve both run organizations before, and weve both been in leadership. But this was really unique because of the timeline and because of the eagerness of every person in our organization.

Feed the Frontlines Georgia serves not only cities like Athens, Atlanta, and Columbus, but it also provides crucial support to rural areas like Berrien County (east of Tifton) and Lanier County (near Valdosta).

To date, they have raised more than $75,000, which has kept dozens of restaurants afloat. Qualls and Sood say Feed the Frontlines Georgia will continue as long as there is a need, even after they return to school in the fall if necessary.

When it comes to immunologists, Prof Luke O'Neill is something of a rock star.

irstly, he is the lead singer of a band called The Metabolix, which has performed for colleagues and students at the Trinity Ball.

He already had a high profile before Covid-19 hit, but now he is a household name.

O'Neill is one of a number of medical professionals who have become regulars on our TV screens and airwaves since the advent of Covid-19. Broadcasters are increasingly calling on medical experts to discuss and advise as Ireland, like other countries, tries to navigate the global pandemic.

Prof O'Neill told the Irish Independent he had been talking to the public about immunology for years "but nobody was listening".

"Covid-19 has been an opportunity to tell people about science, and I think it's a great privilege.

"Some of us [the medical professionals] have tried to be a reassuring presence. The more science you have out there, the better," he said.

He believes scientists, who are often paid by the taxpayer through State funding or grants, have a responsibility to talk to people through the media. - particularly when they have expertise that can benefit or help inform public health measures.

He has been steadily building a media profile as an accessible and entertaining science commentator for almost a decade.

The professor is a popular choice for broadcasters who want to present science in a plain-speaking or even humorous way.

He has had a regular slot answering questions about science on the Pat Kenny show on Newstalk for seven years. Kenny has described O'Neill as "as rare a creature and exotic a discovery as the Galapagos Islands". He regularly writes for the Sunday Independent, and Virgin Media's Six O'Clock Show has Prof O'Neill on regularly enough to describe him as the "resident boffin".

His ability for simply and effectively explaining science has also led to him regularly appearing on RT Junior to help talk about Covid-19 to children.

In 2016, he appeared on Eureka! The Big Bang Query - a comedy science quiz for RT.

Prof O'Neill was raised in Bray, Co Wicklow, and earned a degree in biochemistry at Trinity College in 1985, followed by a PhD in pharmacology from the University of London in 1988.

He now lives in Dublin with his wife Margaret Worrall, who is also a scientist. He has two children.

In 2007, Prof O'Neill was appointed chair of biochemistry at Trinity College Dublin. In 2011, he became the founder director at the Trinity Biomedical Sciences Institute.

Prof O'Neill has been listed among the top 1pc of most-cited researchers in his field, and is recognised as a top immunologist internationally.

In 2016, he was made a Fellow of the prestigious Royal Society for his immunology research. He helped found Inflazome in 2016, and the company's research into a drug that could stop a gene called NLRP3 - which is very active in inflammatory brain diseases - has attracted international attention.

He is also listed as a co-founder of Sitryx - a bio-pharmaceutical company that was set up in 2018 following Trinity College research into disease therapy.

His third book, Never Mind the B#ll*cks, Here's the Science, will be published next month.

It follows the publication of his first book Humanology in 2018 and a children's book, The Great Irish Science Book, in 2019.
