School of Molecular Sciences students reflect on their first semester in the middle of the pandemic – ASU Now

The 2020 pandemic changed many things including the college experience for first-year students.

The excitement to attend the first football game as a new addition to the Sun Devil family and step foot into their first-ever college lecture, for the most part, did not happen traditionally. Though it was challenging and uncertain how the future would look, many of the freshmen from Arizona State University's School of Molecular Sciences did not let the pandemic get in the way of achieving their academic goals. Here, several first-year students from the school talk about their first semester at ASU in the middle of the pandemic.

Sydney Pickett is in the BS biochemistry program; she is one of the many students who excelled in her first semester at the School of Molecular Sciences. Her drive to attain her goals comes from her dream of attending medical school.

Overwhelming was the word she used to describe her first semester of college. Her biggest challenge was being an out-of-state student: Not knowing anyone from Arizona and also trying to adjust to a new city and a completely new environment made her nervous.

She felt homesick often but was able to overcome it with the help of her support system back at home. With her family and friends' encouragement she achieved her goals of meeting new people by stepping outside of her comfort zone, on top of attaining straight As for the semester.

Her new goals for the year are to get a shadowing position and maintain her 4.0 GPA.

One thing I learned is that it is OK to make mistakes and to mess up sometimes. Just be resilient and do not give up, she said.

Eric Do, a BS medicinal biochemistry major, on the other hand, was frustrated when he realized that his first semester of college would be during the pandemic. He didnt get to meet new people or explore the ASU campus as much as he wanted to.

For him the online learning environment was challenging due to it being difficult to focus in a setting outside of a physical classroom. One of his most difficult courses of the semester was CHM 117: General Chemistry for Majors I. Though it was challenging, a perk he received was attending the in-person lab with fewer students, which allowed him to ask the lab instructor more questions if he had any.

His motivation to succeed this semester came from his goals, friends who were in the same situation and his aspirations to become a future pharmacist, which helped him attain straight As. His goals for the upcoming semester are to improve his work-life balance.

I would like to thank my instructor Tim Lamb for being my guide through my first semester, he said.

Jessica Wang is a medicinal biochemistry BS major who has looked forward to her first year in college since she was a child. She wanted to explore her independence, and she knew traveling across the country was the best way to achieve it.

But due to the pandemic, she was initially disappointed with the way her experience turned out.

I felt as though I was taking a step backwards towards my self growth rather than it being an opportunity for new experiences, she said.

What kept her motivated through the semester was her goal of self growth and sense of independence. She found herself doing something different every week, and while it felt overwhelming at times, she never wanted it to stop.She has made the most of her time at ASU by taking advantage of great opportunities that came her way.

She also made good friends during the first semester.

I got very lucky this semester. Having made such a strong friendship with my roommate, we spend most of our time together, she said.

Although it was not ideal, Gabriella Cerna, who is majoring in biochemistry and microbiology, was very grateful that she had the opportunity to attend college in a safe environment.

Transformative is the word she used to describe her semester, because she was able to discover herself and her beliefs through being exposed to many different ideas and viewpoints. Her biggest motivation was her drive to continue learning.

Instead of focusing on external factors like grades, I concerned myself with truly enjoying and understanding the content in my classes, she said.

During her first year she gained a valuable growth mindset that has allowed her to become a more resilient individual and create attainable goals.

Even though this year was not picture perfect for these students, they found ways to make it work for them. They were able to overcome many hurdles that were passed their way through the pandemic, and instead of giving up, they excelled and pushed forward toward their goals of success.

Obituary: Luis Glaser, former head of biological chemistry department, 88 – Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis

Luis Glaser, PhD, a beloved mentor and former head of the then-Department of Biological Chemistry at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, died Dec. 23, 2020, in Miami after a long illness. He was 88.

Also a director of the universitys Division of Biology & Biomedical Sciences, Glaser spent the latter years of his career, from 1986 to 2005, as executive vice president and provost at the University of Miami.

At Washington University, where he earned his PhD in biochemistry, Glaser studied in the laboratory of Nobel laureates Carl and Gerty Cori. He joined the faculty as an instructor in 1956 and rose to head of the biological chemistry department, precursor to the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biophysics; he held that position from 1975 to 1986. He also became director of the Division of Biology & Biomedical Sciences, in 1980. He retired from Washington University in 1986 but remained affiliated with the School of Medicine as an adjunct professor through 1989.

I feel privileged to have known Luis over many years as he moved from graduate student to faculty member to department chair and to director of DBBS, said Carl Frieden, PhD, a professor of biochemistry and molecular biophysics. His knowledge and understanding of science were remarkable. A speed reader, he was always available to discuss any problem with faculty or students as he wandered down the hall, coffee in hand.We frequently had lunch together, which not only revolved around science but also the Medical Science Training Program (MSTP), in which we were both involved in its early days and, indeed, about any topic of the day.

Glaser was born in Vienna. According to an obituary published by the University of Miami, after Austria was annexed by Nazi Germany in 1939, Glasers father, a physician, was told he could no longer practice medicine in the country. Glasers family then moved to Antwerp, Belgium, for a year, and then to Mexico City, where the future scientist grew up.

Glaser earned his bachelors degree from the University of Toronto before pursuing his doctorate and launching his career in St. Louis. He also met his wife, Ruth, at Washington University. They were married for 59 years.

He is survived by his wife; his daughters Miriam Lipsky and Nicole Glaser, and five granddaughters.

Private funeral services were held in December.

Memorial contributions may be made in Glasers memory to the charitable organization of ones choice.

Collaboration with Homeland Security focuses on detecting biothreats – Iowa State University News Service

AMES, Iowa In situations where humans are exposed to biothreats such as a virus, fast detection and response can make all the difference in mitigating harm. But the ability to detect biothreats often relies on expertise and equipment thats difficult to transport and takes time to carry out.

Researchers at Iowa State University hope to change that through a collaborative agreement with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security worth as much as $2.5 million over five years. The effort aims to develop a portable sensor platform capable of detecting numerous biothreats, such as the coronavirus and other toxic agents. Such sensors could be kept in government buildings, airports, or anywhere else at risk for biothreat exposure and could help to quickly detect and mitigate dangers, said Marit Nilsen-Hamilton, a professor in the Roy J. Carver Department of Biophysics, Biochemistry and Molecular Biology and principal investigator of the project.

Up to now weve been looking at detecting infectious viruses in people who are infected, Nilsen-Hamilton said. This is an opportunity to develop a means of detecting viruses and other biothreats in the air. In other words, wed be able to quickly identify when there is a biothreat in the surrounding environment and protect people from exposure.

The team proposes to create a device roughly the size of a shoebox that can sample the air for a range of biothreats, including Ebola virus, SARS-CoV-2 and various toxins. The technology would include a microfluidic collection device that gathers air samples and a suite of sensors to detect and identify biothreats. The device will transfer particles extracted from air samples into a liquid stream to concentrate the particles. The stream passes through an aluminum oxide membrane that contains aptamers, or nucleic acids that behave similarly to antibodies in the human immune system. The biothreat particles bind to the aptamers, which sets off an electrical signal that the sensors detect.

Researchers in Nilsen-Hamiltons laboratory will select aptamers capable of binding to the proteins of the various biothreats included in the scope of the project. Her lab has isolated and characterized eight aptamers from millions of aptamer candidates selected for previous research projects, and she said one of the challenges for this project will be finding optimal aptamers for each threat.

Todd Kingston, an assistant professor of mechanical engineering and research team member, said part of the challenge for the project comes from the wide range of biothreats the device aims to detect. The device must reliably capture and identify various particles that have dimensions ranging from a few nanometers to micrometers, a unit of measurement thats a thousand times larger.

The difference between a micrometer and a nanometer might seem insignificant under most circumstances, but, at the microscopic level where the researchers work, thats a lot of variability for one technology to handle. Kingston said the scientists are considering ways to capture a wide range of aerosolized biothreats.

The research team also includes Monica Lamm, an associate professor of chemical and biological engineering; Pranav Shrotriya, a professor of mechanical engineering; and Wendy Maury, a virologist at the University of Iowa. Shrotriya said the team intends to have a functional device by the conclusion of the collaborative agreement.

We hope to have a working device that acts as a proof of concept at the end of five years, Shrotriya said We want to make sure the device can trap different size particles as well as sense them.

NAU chemistry professor discusses her work on vaccines for HPV, HIV, opioid addiction (VIDEO) – NAU News

Is it possible to have a vaccine to prevent HIV or treat opioid addiction? Naomi Lee, an assistant professor of chemistry and biochemistry at NAU, believes it is, and her research is focused on that goal.

At a time when talk of vaccines is focused on the speed of the development and distribution of the COVID-19 vaccine, Lees work is different; her team is building a foundation of these long-standing conditions that have plagued people for decades. She has focused particularly on diseases that disproportionately affect Native Americans.

The vaccines were developing are in the very early stages among a small research group vs. the COVID-19 vaccines being developed at large pharmaceutical companies with many researchers across the world, Lee said. In addition, the COVID-19 vaccines were developed quickly due to the advancements made over the years towards other coronaviruses and mRNA vaccine technology.

Biochemists Switch DNA Functions on and Off Using Light – SciTechDaily

Biochemists use protein engineering to transfer photocaging groups to DNA.

DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) is the basis of life on earth. The function of DNA is to store all the genetic information, which an organism needs to develop, function and reproduce. It is essentially a biological instruction manual found in every cell.

Biochemists at the University of Mnster have now developed a strategy for controlling the biological functions of DNA with the aid of light. This enables researchers to better understand and control the different processes which take place in the cell for example epigenetics, the key chemical change and regulatory lever in DNA.

The results have been published in the journal Angewandte Chemie.

The cells functions depend on special molecules, the enzymes. Enzymes are proteins, which carry out chemical reactions in the cell. They help to synthesize metabolic products, make copies of the DNA molecules, convert energy for the cells activities, change DNA epigenetically and break down certain molecules.

A team of researchers headed by Prof. Andrea Rentmeister from the Institute of Biochemistry at the University of Mnster used a so-called enzymatic cascade reaction in order to understand and track these functions better. This sequence of successive reaction steps involving different enzymes makes it possible to transfer so-called photocaging groups chemical groups, which can be removed by means of irradiation with light to DNA. Previously, studies had shown that only small residues (small modifications such as methyl groups) could be transferred very selectively to DNA, RNA (ribonucleic acid) or proteins.

As a result of our work, it is now possible to transfer larger residues or modifications such as the photocaging groups just mentioned, explains Nils Klcker, one of the lead authors of the study and a PhD student at the Institute of Biochemistry. Working together with structural biologist Prof. Daniel Kmmel, who also works at the Institute of Biochemistry, it was also possible to explain the basis for the changed activity at a molecular level.

Using so-called protein engineering a method for which a Nobel prize was awarded in 2018 the Mnster researchers engineered one enzyme in the cascade, making it possible to switch DNA functions on and off by means of light. With the aid of protein design, it was possible to expand the substrate spectrum of enzymes in this case, methionine adenosyltransferases (MATs). In their work, the researchers examined two MATs. The modifications carried out offer a starting point for developing other MATs with an expanded substrate spectrum.

Combining these MATs with other enzymes has potential for future cellular applications. This is an important step for implementing in-situ generated, non-natural substances for other enzymes in epigenetic studies, says Andrea Rentmeister.
