Biochemistry is the study of the chemical processes occurring in living matter. As a field, biochemistry is rapidly expanding and highly interdisciplinary. Biochemical concepts and techniques have become the basis for research in physiology, nutrition, environmental and health sciences, and many other disciplines.

The program prepares students for excellence in graduate or medical school, employment in the chemical, biotechnological, or pharmaceutical industries. The degree is a terrific stepping stone for graduate programs in Biochemistry, Bioengineering, Biotechnology, Cell Biology, and many other related fields.

The program consists of basic courses in calculus, biology, chemistry and physics. Advanced courses in both Biology and Chemistry are included, along with specialty Biochemistry courses offered jointly in the Biology and Chemistry departments. Laboratory courses form an important component of the curriculum and include such diverse techniques as PCR, protein purification, gel electrophoresis, computational chemistry, and spectroscopy. This "hands-on" experience is essential to provide the appropriate context for knowledge obtained in the lecture courses.

Based on the emerging national consensus that science is best taught and learned in an interdisciplinary context, Augustana has created a biochemistry major as a collaboration across several departments.

The major is composed of classes from Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics, and Physics. The nature of how science is currently studied and implemented in the workplace heavily favors those who are readily able to integrate across these disciplines.

Students will achieve a broad background in the natural sciences that prepares them for a variety of post-graduation options, including research positions, graduate studies, professional health disciplines, biotechnology, chemical industry, and other professions.

Students graduating with a biochemistry major will have the ability to communicate in a variety of scientific languages and position themselves at the forefront of integrative scientific discovery.

Previously, students desiring to attain a degree in both biology and chemistry needed to double major, or obtain minors, in these fields. Biochemistry offers an alternative to the demanding class load required by a biology-chemistry double major. While still a large major, biochemistry offers an interdisciplinary degree for those students hoping to pursue studies across both fields.

In addition, a biochemistry major allows students greater freedom to explore a wide array of courses and areas within the liberal arts curriculum, as well as providing opportunity to further explore additional courses of interest within the sciences.

The biochemistry department will prepare you to enter employment with many skills, the most important of those being how to go about answering a question you dont know the answer to.

One of the first courses biochemistry majors are required to take is designed to introduce you to careers, professional organizations, ethical issues and the requirements for advanced studies. In the first two years, youll take various courses in the sciences such as general, organic, quantitative and physical chemistry as well as physics and biology. Each of these courses builds a foundation for you to be successful in the upper-level course work in biochemistry, metabolism, cell biology and bioinformatics.
