Grey’s Anatomy season 21: Release date speculation, cast news, and latest information – RadioTimes

The recent shorter twentieth season may have had fewer episodes due to the recent WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes but that does not mean it was short on the drama!

Even with fewer appearances, Dr Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo) still had a major storyline as she did covert research into Alzheimer's disease, but she and her co-conspirators faced a huge stumbling block in the final episodes: Dr Catherine Fox (Debbie Allen).

So, with the new season in mind, what lies ahead for Grey's Anatomy season 21 and when can we expect it?

Grey's Anatomy season 21 will air in the US on ABC and Hulu in Fall 2024.

We can likely expect the episodes to premiere in September or October 2024 in line with the show's usual transmission pattern.

The series won't be impacted by industry strikes this time around so we should expect a full-length season.

The following Grey's Anatomy main cast members are expected to return next season.

The main cast will see two departures in the next season. Actor Jake Borelli will return for an exit storyline for long-running character Dr Levi Schmitt, while actress Midori Francis will also be leaving the show following an exit storyline for Dr Mika Yasuda, making her the first of the new generation of interns to leave the series. Both are expected to appear in multiple episodes before they leave next season.

Deadline has also reported that a cost-cutting move will likely see episodic appearances for series veterans reduced in a bid to lower costs, which appears to be the reason for Borelli's exit too.

Additionally, we can likely expect returns for recurring characters including Scott Speedman as Dr Nick Marsh, Debbie Allen as Dr Catherine Fox, Jaicy Elliot as Dr Taryn Helm, Natalie Morales as Dr Monica Beltran, and Jason George as Dr Ben Warren.

According to Deadline, it is expected that George will return to a more prominent role in the show as Ben following the end of the spin-off series Station 19 and Dr Warren's renewed interest in medicine. It remains to be seen if he will be a series regular or recurring character, but Ben is still very much Bailey's loving husband.

Well, there are a number of plot points to continue following the finale of season 20.

Dr Catherine Fox went on a firing spree following multiple clashes, cutting ties with Dr Meredith Grey over her secret Alzheimer's research and then with Meredith's accomplices Dr Amelia Shepherd and Dr Teddy Altman - the latter of whom was fired as Chief of Surgery. Dr Owen Hunt was also fired when he stood up for Teddy when Catherine tried to drop her from a trauma response team to a wildfire.

Meanwhile, the interns were also in a mutiny over the harsh decision made by Dr Fox against Dr Lucas Adams, which did not seem to bother Dr Fox until she faced the potential resignation of Dr Miranda Bailey!

Elsewhere, Dr Richard Webber had also been questioning his career after having a major shaky period following the near-breaking of his sobriety.

Dr Levi Schmitt also considered his career future as he aimed to get on a pediatric medicine fellowship and we know his exit is imminent...

Plus, Dr Jo Wilson discovered she was pregnant with Dr Atticus 'Link' Lincoln's baby - will the pair's family continue to run smoothly?

Finally, romance is in the air for divorc Dr Winston Ndugu and newcomer Dr Monica Beltran, while Dr Mika Yasuda and Dr Jules Millin shared a near-kiss. Where will things go next? Well, given Yasuda's coming exit, it can't be good...

Grey's Anatomy seasons 1 to 20 are available to stream on Disney Plus now sign up to Disney Plus for 7.99 a month or 79.90 a year now. Season 18 is also available on Sky and NOW with new episodes airing on Sky Witness in the UK.

Why Meredith and Cristina Beat Meredith and Derek on ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ – Vanity Fair

Did Meredith Grey and McDreamy share the greatest Shonda Rhimescreated romance of all time? Does any couple burn for each other more than Bridgertons Daphne and her Duke of Hastings? Or were Scandals Olivia Pope and President Fitzgerald Grant the ultimate couple goals? On a special episode of Still Watching, hosts Hillary Busis, Richard Lawson, and Chris Murphy discuss and debate which Shondaland romance represented the greatest love of all.

In the wake of #Polin on Bridgerton, Still Watching thought it was the perfect time to revisit the many romantic relationships that originated on Rhimes-produced programs like Greys Anatomy, Scandal, How to Get Away With Murder, and Bridgerton. Rhimes has a knack for drawing compelling and sometimes incredibly frustrating romantic relationships that have broken into the cultural zeitgeist.

While all three agree on Rhimess undeniable influence, finding consensus on which Shondaland couple most stands the test of time is a bit trickier. Busis opened the debate with a curveballchoosing Greys Anatomy BFFs Meredith Grey and Cristina Yang, played by Ellen Pompeo and Sandra Oh, as the greatest love story Rhimes ever told. Its not technically a romantic relationship, Busis admits. But I think it was the heart and soul of Greys Anatomy for its first 10 years. Murphy was quick to object on technical groundsthey were friends, not loversbut agreed with Busis that their relationship represented the heart of the show.

Lawson, meanwhile, went all in on How to Get Away With Murder, naming groundbreaking gay couple Connor (Jack Falahee) and Oliver (Conrad Ricamora) as the greatest and perhaps steamiest Rhimes romance of all. There was a lot of sex on that show, and they had the most sex, said Lawson. The fact that this network drama was giving that space to a gay couple, I really dont think had happened on television.

Still Watching listeners highlighted candidates from Private Practice and Bridgerton. Murphy, however, went for a classic: Scandals Vermont-loving Olivia and Fitz, played by Kerry Washington and Tony Goldwyn. Murphy defends his choice by mentioning their staying power in the public consciousness, noting that even six years after Scandals series finale, these two still regularly go viral just because theyre in a room together. Ever the contrarian, Busis maintains that Olivia and Jake (Scott Foley) were ultimately the better Scandal coupleeven though he was working for a spy agency run by Olivias father that attempted to overthrow the US government. Well, all is fair in love and war.

Did we forget an all-time Shondaland couple? Send an email to Still Watching at stillwatchingpod@gmail.com, and stay tuned as the podcast dives back into Bridgerton for part two next week.

Grey’s Anatomy Fan Favorite Eyed to Return Full-Time After End of Station 19 – CBR

Grey's Anatomy and Station 19 fans will be thrilled by the latest news surrounding Jason George, a veteran of both ABC TV shows. The actor who plays the doctor-turned-firefighter Ben Warren will reportedly return to Grey's Anatomy following the conclusion of its spinoff, Station 19.

According to Deadline, talks are currently ongoing between George and ABC. No deal is yet in place, and in what capacity he will return is still unclear, though George is expected to rejoin Grey's Anatomy as a series regular. The actor first appeared as Ben Warren in Season 6 and was a series regular from Season 12 on the long-running hit medical drama before leaving to headline the Station 19 spinoff series in 2018. Rumors of George's return first surfaced in January. Showrunner Meg Martinis teased in March that the way story arcs ended for Grey's Anatomy characters, including George's Ben, who had crossed over to Station 19, would influence a potential return.

Millie Bobby Brown is usually linked to the success of Stranger Things. But many fans don't know about her performance in a hit medical drama.

George recently discussed the possible return to Grey's Anatomy, implying Ben had unfinished business with his wife on the show, Chandra Wilson's Miranda Bailey. "I like to think that there's still a Ben-Bailey, or Benley, story to tell. I think that's a possibility. There may be conversations," he teased. The actor also revealed his sadness about the cancelation of Station 19 but was grateful its writers had proper notice, allowing them to craft a befitting finale.

"It's incredibly tough because it feels like we have so many more years in us," George said. "Knowing that this was our last season, the writers got to write an ending that landed that plane the way it was supposed to land. We got to write a beautiful ending, and we also got to schedule the whole thing and deal with each other knowing that this is going to be goodbye as a family every day."

Shane Ross made a strong impression as soon as he walked into Grey Sloane. But, why did this fan favourite character decide to call it quits?

The news of George's potential return comes after Grey'sAnatomy recently announced the imminent departure of two beloved cast members. Series regular Jake Borelli, who plays Levi Schmitt, will leave after being a part of the show for seven years. Midori Francis, who portrays Mika Yasuda, will also depart the series. Borelli and Francis will appear in Season 21 to wrap up the storylines of their respective characters.

Grey's Anatomy and Station 19 are available to stream on Hulu.

Grey’s Anatomy Season 20 Finale Review: No Shortage of Drama – CBR

The following contains major spoilers for Greys Anatomy Season 20, Episode 10, Burn It Down, which debuted Thursday, May 20 on ABC.

Greys Anatomy Season 20 is already at its end. The latest Greys saga only spanned ten episodes -- the second-shortest season in the show's long history, second only to Season 1. Yet even though it was brief, Season 20 both teased the ABC series' future and embraced its intensely beloved legacy. That's particularly felt in the Season 20 finale, "Burn It Down," which perfectly combines the two.

Season 20 proved the show could still work with star Ellen Pompeo appearing in a slightly limited capacity. Even after two decades, the core premise of Shondaland's first TV show remains the same: it blends aspects of medicine like surgery and medical research with aspects of human nature like love, loss, and trauma. Season 20s final episode, Burn It Down, brings the season full circle, playing on classic Greys tropes while keeping the door open wide for Season 21.

Here's why these fan-favorite Grey's Anatomy characters left the show and what they have been up to in the time since leaving Grey Sloan Memorial.

Season 20s finale Burn It Down unfolds against a backdrop of disaster; a raging wildfire creeps toward Seattles city limits. With the town covered in smoke, the staff at Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital prepare for a flood of patients, for not the first time. Theyre also reeling from a dramatic staff change: Catherine Fox has fired Teddy Altman, and Teddys husband and head of trauma Owen Hunt somewhat steps into the role of Interim Chief of Surgery despite managing a hectic Emergency Room. Catherine also gives Meredith and Amelia an ultimatum, demanding they hand over all their research and project findings to her right-hand man Dr. Tom Koracick, who left Grey's Anatomy at the end of Season 17. In exchange for their compliance, Catherine assures Meredith and Amelia that their jobs will remain safe, and Teddy will be reinstated as Chief. But she also makes it clear that their project is technically hers as the head of the Catherine Fox Foundation -- no surprise to fans, as Catherine has a history of throwing her power around when her authority is threatened.

Outside the conference room, Lucas Adams bonds with a patient suffering from intense memory loss before Blue recognizes the woman as his former fiance, who doesn't recall their relationship. Greys Anatomy is also no stranger to secret former partners, but this reveal is still surprising following the sexual and romantic tension between Blue and Jules throughout Seasons 19 and 20. Adams gets the highest score out of the intern class, but Catherine informs him that she wants to force him to restart his residency. Adams' fellow interns interrupt their meeting, with everyone threatening to quit if Catherine holds him back. Catherine isnt fazed by the camaraderie until Dr. Miranda Bailey threatens to leave along with them. All of these developments feel fairly familiar to anyone who's watched the show before.

Burn It Down further features the personal subplots that are a staple of Grey's Anatomy. Winston Ndugu and Monica Beltran have a surprising fling, having bonded over their recent divorces. Jules and Yasuda also nearly share a kiss in the episode, though they get interrupted by Simone. The most significant romantic scene in the episode lies with Meredith, who takes an important step with her boyfriend Nick Marsh. Meredith understandably shuts Nick's offer of marriage down as her last marriage made her a widow and a single mother, but she tells him about her new home in Boston, and he agrees to be her life partner. The romantic subplots are sweet, but theyre wildly overshadowed by the chaos unfolding at Grey Sloan, as Meredith, Teddy, Owen, Amelia and possibly more lose their jobs throughout the episode.

Almost immediately after Greys Anatomys first episode, fans were hooked on its non-stop drama and hospital action, including iconic cliffhangers.

By the end of the Grey's Anatomy Season 20 finale, a majority of the characters face job insecurity -- either having being fired, threatening to quit, or considering a career change. Several characters may get fired from the hospital in Season 21, with Midori Francis leaving as Yasuda and Jake Borelli also departing. Borelli's character Levi Schmitt gives Jo Wilson the surprising news that she's pregnant. This doesnt live up to the cliffhangers from many memorable Greys Anatomy finales, but there are still unresolved problems surrounding her pregnancy, notably Jo's ongoing conflict with her partner Link, whom Jo leaves in the dark in Burn It Down. The pregnancy could strengthen their relationship or tear it apart, especially given their experiences raising two small children.

Fans would definitely enjoy seeing Catherines downfall in Season 21, especially given her stance against Merediths Alzheimers project. It doesnt make sense that Catherines marriage to Webber would be secure if she damaged Meredith's work, given Richards father-like relationship with Meredith and Amelia, and his having lost two people he loves to the disease. Because of these plot points, "Burn It Down" is effective, even if it's not a mind-blowing finale like viewers have come to expect.

It doesnt feel like a Greys Anatomy finale episode, and a lot happens without proper execution. Some of the disjointed aspects could stem from the overall setup season, as ten episodes didnt properly pace the storylines. But Greys fans will likely tune in for Season 21 despite there being a relative lack of jaw-dropping moments compared to the conclusions of earlier seasons. The show needs to change if it's going to make it to Season 22, and this finale seems to be laying the seeds for that to happen -- even if it does so in a very predictable way.

It’s Time For Grey’s Anatomy To Move On From Meredith – Screen Rant

Warning! This article contains SPOILERS for Grey's Anatomy season 20, episode 9.

Ellen Pompeo stepped down from her series regular role in Greys Anatomy season 19, but Meredith has awkwardly hung around the series since, proving its time for them to part ways. Meredith had a disappointing exit in Greys Anatomy season 19 that left many viewers wanting more. Yet, even with the sendoff she received, she has played a major, inconsistent role in season 20. It has been confirmed that Pompeo will appear in the Greys Anatomy season 20 finale, meaning Meredith will have been in half of the 10-episode season by the time it ends.

When Meredith left in the Greys Anatomy season 19 mid-season premiere, viewers knew it wasnt her final episode. Meredith was already set to return at the end of Greys Anatomy season 19, giving her appearances in just under half of the 20-episode season. Even after leaving, Meredith was somehow more involved in Greys Anatomy season 20 than in season 19. With Greys Anatomy season 21 confirmed, it begs the question of how involved Meredith will be in the future. There have already been character cuts and reduced cast roles, and Meredith could and should be one of them.

Merediths Greys Anatomy season 20 storyline revolves around the controversial, potentially groundbreaking Alzheimers research shes been conducting behind Catherines back. In doing this, Meredith has dragged multiple characters into her lies, including Amelia, who shes doing the research with, and Teddy, who has helped fund it. This isnt the first time Meredith has made a bad decision in Greys Anatomy, but it should be the last. Meredith is no longer a young intern or resident rebelling against the system, shes a seasoned doctor playing games with her boss and leaving peoples jobs in the balance.

Though Meredith told Nick she isnt afraid of being fired as she can continue her research elsewhere, not everyone is in the same position. When Catherine found out about their secret research, she fired Teddy from her position as Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital Chief of Surgery. Teddy risked her job for Meredith, but all Meredith cares about is the research. Meredith even guilt-tripped Amelia into continuing their work by talking about honoring her dead mother when Amelia said she couldnt lose her job.

Grey's Anatomy season 20's final few episodes have set up the perfect way for two of Grey Sloan's longest-standing surgeons to exit the series.

Amelia and Teddy have young children, and while Meredith was able to uproot her life and bring her three children to Boston, Amelia and Teddy cant necessarily, and shouldn't have to, do the same. Merediths Greys Anatomy season 20 storyline is causing a disaster not just for herself, but those around her, and she doesnt seem to care. Merediths character has always had problems in Greys Anatomy, but season 20 has proved she hasnt learned from her mistakes, and its ruining what was left to enjoy about her character.

Many viewers, even the most loyal, have wondered when and how Greys Anatomy will finally end. With the revolving door of characters, and only three remaining from the first episode, many have felt like Greys Anatomy has needed to pull the plug for years. Yet, Greys Anatomy season 20 breathed new life into the show by introducing the first exciting intern group in seasons. Sadly, Yasuda is leaving Greys Anatomy in season 21, and season 20 has also teased Lucas leaving.

These exits feel premature, not just because theyve only been around for two seasons thus far, but because the show hasnt allowed viewers to spend enough time with them in said seasons. This is partially because Merediths Greys Anatomy season 20 comebacks take up valuable screen time from the interns and other characters. Since only a few characters know about her research, Merediths storyline feels too isolated, thus taking away from Greys Anatomy as an ensemble show. Merediths Greys Anatomy exit was supposed to be good for the interns, and her sticking around has only hurt them and others.

When Ellen Pompeo announced her reduced Greys Anatomy role, she said she wanted to make room for other projects after focusing almost solely on the medical drama for almost 20 years. This is great for her career, but it should've meant a complete departure from Greys Anatomy. Meredith comes and goes in her comeback episodes, likely because they have to be filmed around Pompeos schedule. Not knowing when shell show up makes her Greys Anatomy season 20 appearances feel random and shoehorned.

Greys Anatomy can survive without Meredith, and the seasons 19 and 20 episodes in which she was absent proved this. Yet, it seems like those behind the show dont believe this, causing them to force a Meredith storyline into Greys Anatomy season 20 when everyone else, including Meredith, was ready to move on. Though the Alzheimers research storyline could be seen as fitting by bringing Merediths storyline full circle, it also needs to be how her Greys Anatomy story finally ends.

The Grey’s Anatomy Boys Went Viral On TikTok For Recreating ‘I’m Just Ken,’ And They Really Brought The Kenergy To … – CinemaBlend

Greys Anatomy wrapped up its 20th season on Thursday with an emotional finale that included a natural disaster, some huge revelations about some of our favorite Seattle surgeons and one grand gesture involving Miranda Bailey and the interns to keep us in suspense until fall. Before all that, though, the cast showed off some major Kenergy, as the guys of Grey Sloan Memorial re-created Ryan Goslings viral Im Just Ken performance from the Academy Awards, going viral themselves for their impassioned take on the Barbie musical number.

Chris Carmack, who plays Atticus Lincoln on Greys Anatomy, led the way, looking very much the part of Barbies companion. This is one TikTok video you just have to see for yourself:

Just like Ryan Gosling started his Oscars number sitting behind Margot Robbie, Chris Carmack wearing a fuzzy white jacket over his pink scrubs and a rainbow-colored cowboy hat was seated behind Camilla Luddington, who plays Links on-screen love interest Jo Wilson. Luddington and Natalie Morales (who joined Season 20 as Monica Beltran) gave the same classic reactions as Robbie and Billie Eilish, as Carmack stood up and continued the number with the hospitals other Kens.

Kevin McKidd and Anthony Hill (aka Drs. Owen Hunt and Winston Ndugu) were chief amongst them, with Jake Borelli who will end his time as Levi Schmitt in Season 21 strumming his guitar. Niko Terho (McDreamys nephew, Lucas Adams) gave his signature smolder, Harry Shum Jr. (Blue Kwan) made a brief appearance, and even Richard Webber portrayer James Pickens Jr. got in on the fun.

Fans seemed to love the Barbie-inspired number, with comments including:

The boys were no doubt inspired by their co-stars, as Camilla Luddington and the Greys Anatomy women went full Barbie earlier this year in celebration of Jessica Capshaws return as Arizona Robbins.

Its wonderful to see the cast having so much fun and making viral videos especially ones that dont involve them scrubbing in on real surgeries but things may not be as beachy as they appear. Greys Anatomy will be in a new timeslot when Season 21 hits the 2024 TV schedule, and budget cuts could mean less screen time for cast members across the board. The longtime medical drama keeps losing cast members, too, with news of Midori Francis exit coming just days after Jake Borellis.

Your Daily Blend of Entertainment News

The head honchos at ABC dont seem too concerned, however, and the Greys Anatomy loyal will likely be more than willing to shift their Thursday viewing parties in order to keep watching all of the delicious Seattle drama. While we wait, all 20 seasons of the series are available to stream with a Hulu subscription, should you want to rewatch Greys Anatomy from the starting point of your favorite era.
