Inspiring and instructional: The Anatomy of MasterClass – Observatory of Educational Innovation

Serena Williams teaches tennis, Stephen Curry the right technique for getting a basketball through the net, Gordon Ramsey instructs cooking, Jodie Foster explains directing, Neil Gaiman, storytelling, and Neil deGrasse Tyson, scientific thinking. These are not just people who are leaders in their field. They are people whom we have admired for a long time. We have consistently consumed their content for years, in some cases, decades. We have an emotional connection with them that derives from the personal significance that we have attached to the ideal we have of these celebrities.

A large audience has followed Jodie Foster's career since her role in "The Silence of the Lambs," perhaps even before. Some people have chosen a career in science thanks to the outreach work of Neil deGrasse Tyson. Others became ardent fans of tennis or basketball after following the athletic trajectories of Serena Williams and Stephen Curry.

The objective of a MasterClass ad is not to sell the idea of learning a discipline or area of theoretical study; it is to bring you close to your heroes and convince you that they will share the secret of what makes them geniuses. However, is the promise fulfilled?

The MasterClass website offers an annual membership for USD 180 that allows access to all the courses in its catalog, nearly four times the price of Domestika's annual plan without a discount. What is the added value of paying this sum instead of just subscribing to a less expensive, similar platform?

First of all, the production values are surprisingly high for an instructional video or tutorial. All the elements, the technical part, the photography, the narrative, the lighting, the shooting angles, all the aspects of production are very well presented. The visual experience when accessing any of these courses is undoubtedly outstanding. It will make the same impression as seeing any of these instructors exercise the disciplines for which we admire them.

The reading materials are complete and useful supplements to the video lessons and provide a more in-depth perspective on what underlies the skills and trajectories of the instructors. The video lessons are presented in brief and agile formats so as not to overwhelm viewers and to be comfortable for audiences at different levels of mastery in diverse disciplines.

On the other hand, the platform does not provide direct access to experts who are instructing us. While the videos do have a question and answer section that can be helpful to clarify a couple of specific questions, they do not provide followup on learning any of the items that instructors teach.

There are also no efficient ways to create a community of apprentices who remain in communication and grow together. The essential elements for continuing education include the social aspects, feedback, and interactions with people who are learning the same thing. The contents of the MasterClass site are presented more as a unilateral experience, in which we only receive the experiences and knowledge of the instructors.

If we approach the courses as vignettes of entertainment, simple instruction, and inspiration, then these sessions work perfectly. As spectators, we may be glued to the screen watching Gordon Ramsey do wonders on a cutting board or Steve Martin explaining how he built a comedy career without considering himself funny in the first place. These are the components of a fascinating story, not necessarily a practical lesson, but isn't that what the MasterClass ad was selling us in the first place? In a situation of prolonged isolation, do we always need to be exposed to effective learning? There are more practical courses offered, perhaps less entertaining, with concrete lessons and efficient tracking tools. Whether a product like MasterClass works or not will depend entirely on what the learner or viewer is seeking.

If what you want is a specific program that helps you master an area of study or discipline, a MasterClass may not be the best option for you. However, if you want to have a one-on-one experience with an expert whom you admire and want to know more about how he or she exercises their crafts, then acquiring a course of this profile might serve this purpose perfectly.

Have you taken a MasterClass or any other course on a platform that advertises courses taught by experts who have become famous in their disciplines? Tell us how you felt about the experience in the comments.

Anatomy of Deceit: Team Trump Deploys Doctors with Dubious Qualifications to Push Fake Cure for Covid-19 – The Washington Spectator

On July 27, a dozen physicians posed in front of the Supreme Court in Washington, D.C., dressed in white lab coats with Americas Frontline Doctors stitched over the pocket. The groups chief spokesperson was Dr. Simone Gold, an emergency physician from Los Angeles. They were introduced by Jenny Beth Martin, the founding CEO of Tea Party Patriots, as participants in the White Coat Summit. The doctors made spirited arguments for the use of hydroxychloroquine as a cure for Covid-19 and against wearing masks and imposing lockdownsall running counter to the recommendations of Dr. Anthony Fauci and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.[1]

Although the event was billed as a press conference, few journalists attended. A video posted by a bystander showed only a handful of attendees, most of them dressed in tourists shorts and T-shirts. But the event was livestreamed by Breitbart News and quickly went (so to speak) viral.

There was a rapid backlash. Much of the media attention focused on Dr. Stella Immanuel, one of Golds cohort. Following the press conference, the Daily Beast posted a video of Immanuel, who is also a Pentecostal preacher, delivering a sermon claiming that various female ailments were caused by sexual visitations from demons.

Immanuel has since disappeared from the Americas Frontline Doctors online roster, but the group has continued to get traction. On August 10, Pat Robertsons show on the Christian Broadcasting Network carried an interview with Simone Gold and an endorsement of her hydroxychloroquine cure. On August 21, Alex Joness NewsWars carried an interview with another member of Americas Frontline Doctors, Mark McDonald. McDonalda child psychiatristmaintained, If all Americans had access to hydroxychloroquine, the pandemic would essentially end in about 30 days.

Science has shown otherwise. Despite early hopes last spring, there is mounting evidence that hydroxychloroquine is a problematicand even dangeroustreatment for Covid-19. One expert with firsthand knowledge is Nick Sawyer, an academic emergency physician in Sacramento, Calif. In July he wrote an article for Lifeline, the publication of the California chapter of the American College of Emergency Physicians, describing his harrowing two weeks of service in the Covid wards of Elmhurst Hospital in Queens. Sawyer was part of a team of California doctors dispatched by Governor Gavin Newsome to offer emergency assistance at the epicenter of the epidemic, at the height of the New York City outbreak.

Sawyer is now dealing with the spike in cases in California, this time with the benefit of four months of additional Covid research. The science on the effectiveness of hydroxychloroquine in treating Covid-19 is settledmultiple high-quality studies have shown that it shows no benefit, he notes. Far more concerning, Sawyer says, is its potential harm: Hydroxychloroquine can cause unstable cardiac arrhythmias, cardiac arrest and sudden cardiac death. Over recent months, the Food and Drug Administration, the American Medical Association, and other organizations have issued warnings that the drug should be withdrawn as a Covid-19 treatment. Its irresponsible for Americas Frontline Doctors to continue to push this medication on the unwitting American population, Sawyer states.

Why, then, would Golds band of physicians continue its campaign to pitch the treatment to the public? Simone Gold has repeatedly described her group as a grassroots organization acting in the service of its patients.[2] In fact, it has been a highly orchestrated effort, months in the making, assembled by conservative Washington insiders in direct consultation with the White House, with the goal of reopening the economy in time to benefit Trumps reelection prospectsregardless of the toll in human lives.

The first public mention of the initiative may have been a Washington Post story on April 13, as the virus raged across New York City and Covid-19 deaths passed the 20,000 mark.[3] The Post reported the creation of a new conservative coalition pushing for the White House and GOP lawmakers to push back against health professionals who have urged more caution. The leadership was listed as Stephen Moore of the Heritage Foundation, Adam Brandon of FreedomWorks, and Lisa Nelson of the American Legislative Exchange Council. A fourth individual, Jenny Beth Martin, is the founding director of the Tea Party Patriots. She would play a key role in organizing the events to come, including the doctors Washington summit in July.

Brandon, Nelson, and Martin are all prominent members of a secretive organization called the Council for National Policy, a shadowy coalition that coordinates initiatives among conservative megadonors, political operatives, and media owners, many of them Christian fundamentalists (see Holding Democracy Hostage).

The Post story quoted an interview with Richard Viguerie, a co-founder of the CNP, on the mission of the initiative: The sooner we get the economy going and back up, the better its going to be for conservatives and Republicans in this election year....Conservatives feel the government has overreacted, and its got to end.[4]

The new coalition, called Save Our Country, officially debuted on April 27, as U.S. Covid deaths approached 55,000.[5] Headed by economist Art Laffer, its maiden press release featured quotes from Brandon, Nelson, and Martin. The long-term consequences of a prolonged societal shutdown outweigh the damage done by the virus itself, Martin stated. We must immediately reopen the economy.[6] Earlier that week, The New York Times reported that the Save Our Country coalitions members were mobilizing their networks for state-level rallies, filing lawsuits, and commissioning polls, all to counter the lockdowns: Nonprofit groups including FreedomWorks and Tea Party Patriots have used their social media accounts and text and email lists to spread the word about protests across the country.[7]

But the state-level protests turned out to be of limited utility, and the group began to look for new avenues. In April, CNP Action, the lobbying arm of the CNP, began a series of weekly conference calls to discuss Covid strategy. On May 11as U.S. Covid deaths reached 74,270[8]one of the calls was intercepted and published by the Center for Media and Democracy and the Associated Press.

Among the participants were CNP President William Walton, CNP member Nancy Schulze,[9] and Mercedes Schlapp, a senior adviser to the Trump campaign. Schulze, the wife of former nine-term Pennsylvania Republican Congressman Dick Schulze, opened the call with a warning that two-thirds of the American people were wary of reopening the economy. But, she added, Doctors are seen by the American peoplethey have a 92 percent trust rate with the American people according to polling....There is a coalition of doctors, doctors coalition, who are extremely pro-Trump, that have been preparing and coming together for the war ahead in the campaign on health care, and these doctors could be activated for this conversation now for reopening.

The one thing the left does give credence to, in that they tend to be motivated by a secular worldview, the one thing that they do appreciate and listen to is science, and we have doctors that have the facts, that lived this themselves, that are in the trenches, that are saying its time to reopen, Schulze continued. Ive been working with them for three years. Theres a coalition of doctors ... including the most respected doctors in this country, that are ready to speak if somebody will just call on them.

Walton told her, We need to not just make the economic argument, we need to make the health argument, and we need doctors to make that argument, not us. And so that would be great if you, if we could tee that up.

Schulze said shed be happy to put him in touch with any and all of these doctors, and I have submitted 27 of these doctors names to the campaign for the doctors coalition that theyre in the process of building.

Mercedes Schlapp asked Schulze if she had spoken with Hannah Castillo, director of coalitions for the Trump campaign. I know theyve been working on building that coalition. I know theyre going through the vetting process right now. As long as you have the names, that would be helpful....Those are the type of guys we want to get out on TV and radio to help push out the message.

Schulze replied, Ive been working with Hannah for over six weeks now, so they already have been vetted. But they need to be put on the screen.[10]

Dr. Simone Gold, a 54-year-old emergency physician from Los Angeles, was ready for her close-up. On April 22, Gold had tweeted a stand-up of herself wearing a white Emergency Dept. coat, in front of Los Angeles Cedars-Sinai hospital emergency room, suggesting that concerns over the virus were inflated. She pointed out that the hospital parking lots are empty, the emergency department volume is down, the patient census is down, and thats really in most of the areas Ive been to.[11]

On May 7, she brought a more explicit anti-lockdown message to a program on the Whiskey Politics show on Salem Radio, part of the massive Salem Media conglomerate owned by two leading members of the Council for National Policy.[12] It was headlined DR. SIMONE GOLD GOES PUBLIC! What the Government WONT Tell Us About COVID-19.

Its not at all clear that overall, that social distancing is going to make a huge impact, Gold said.[13] Were all acting like as though theres a huge medical crisis. Theres a medical issue, we should handle it responsibly, but whats going on in our country now is a terrible legal crisis. Our constitutional rights are being trampled on right and left.[14] Gold later added, Theres always viruses...but Im not sure that its front-page news.[15]

The Guardian reported that over the same period, the Save Our Country coalition spent $50,000 on videos on social media platforms targeting independents and Republicans with the message that Covid-19 mostly hits the elderly to minimize risks for others.[16]

On May 19as U.S. Covid deaths reached 84,640[17]the CNPs doctors coalition (billed as A Doctor A Day) made its debut with an open letter to Donald Trump signed by 500+ doctors (a number that was later revised to over 800). In medical terms, the shutdown was a mass casualty incident, it stated. It is impossible to overstate the short, medium, and long-term harm to peoples health with a continued shutdown. The lead signatory was Dr. Simone Gold.

On June 16with U.S. Covid deaths approaching 110,000[18] and the U.S. economy in freefallthe Save Our Country coalition published an open letter to President Trump and Leader McConnell, urging that the multi-trillions of dollars of federal government debt spending in the wake of the Coronavirus come to a stop.[19]Twelve of the 20 signatories (among them Brandon, Nelson, and Martin) were members of the CNP, including CNP President William Walton and Executive Director Bob McEwen.

The push to reopen the schools became a full-court press. On July 7, Trump assembled a White House meeting on the subject. Jenny Beth Martin spoke as both the CEO of Tea Party Patriots and as a mom.

Mr. President, you were right, and I hope you will trust your instincts, she told Trump. America is not meant to be shut down. And we have to reopen schools this fall. Ive been in touch with almost a thousand doctors from around the country.I helped Dr. Simone Gold spearhead a letter to you signed by 800 physicians and surgeons who talked about the side effects of the lockdowns.Ive done a second letter with over 150 doctors, 240 nurses, 330 educators, 70 national groups, and thousands of parents and concerned Americans who want to see schools reopened.

A video of Martins statement appeared, billed as Mom Gives Unexpected Speech Directly to Trump without naming her or her affiliation. It was posted on various social media platforms, including Glenn Becks YouTube channel, The Blaze (where it clocked over 400,000 views as of August 4).[20]

Dr. Simone Gold was now preparing to join Jenny Beth Martin on center stage. On July 22, Gold warmed up for her appearance on The Charlie Kirk Show, with over 157,000 YouTube subscribers. Kirk, a member of the Council for National Policy, heads a group called Turning Point USA, which recruits right-wing campus activists. (Donald Trump addressed its Youth Action Summit last December, and Donald Trump Jr. is quoted on its website stating, Im convinced that the work by Turning Point USA and Charlie Kirk will win back the future of America.)[21]

The introduction for Kirks show summed up the case Gold and her colleagues would make over the coming weeks: Charlie is joined in studio by board-certified emergency physician Dr. Simon [sic] Gold, who says nearly everything weve been told about the Chinese Coronavirus is a lie. She and Charlie take a deep dive into the efficacy of hydroxychloroquine and why the U.S. government is barring physicians from prescribing the drugendangering potentially 100,000 lives, at least. Charlie also takes on Dr. Fauci and Dr. Birx, asking if Dr. Gold challenges the effectiveness of wearing masks. Dr. Gold makes a stunning and factual assertion about the death rates and who exactly is to blame for what she believes is one of the biggest lies ever perpetrated against the American people. [22]

Golds stunning assertion was the often-repeated claim that doctors were falsifying death certificates, speculating without foundation that they were inflating Covid-19 cases by 20 to 30 percent.[23] Gold also asserted, Masks are really foolish, they dont do anything....Theres zero scientific justification for the mask.[24]

Jenny Beth Martin emphasized a social media campaign from the start. Her Tea Party Patriots website posted the program of the White Coat Summit, offering the participating doctors a two-hour session devoted to expanding their social media reach: YouTube and other social media vastly exceed television news as the information source for most Americans. Interviews and Q/A with social media personalities with large followers is the best way to talk to Americans. Doctors who want to answer questions from these modern journalists will have the opportunity.

By the time Jenny Beth Martin hosted Golds White Coat Summit on July 27, U.S. Covid-19 deaths had skyrocketed to over 136,000.[25] The physicians presentation carried a lethal stew of misinformation. Dr. Bob Hamilton, a pediatrician from Santa Monica, assured viewers, Children are not passing [the virus] on to their parents or their teachers. (A few days later, the CDC released a report on a massive transmission event in June at a Georgia summer camp, with a median age of 12.[26])

Dr. Richard Ursoan ophthalmologistpraised hydroxychloroquine as a cure for the virus, but it was not clear that Urso had ever had any significant experience treating Covid-19 patients. Another speaker was Dr. Daniel Erickson, a Bakersfield physician who co-owns an urgent care facility. In April he had been censured by the American College of Emergency Physicians and the American Academy of Emergency Medicine for his reckless and untested musings opposing stay-at-home orders and promoting the conspiracy theory about doctors misattributing deaths to Covid-19.[27]

The social media strategy paid off. Gold and her colleagues video, livestreamed on Breitbart News, reportedly reached 185,000 concurrent users.[28] The New York Times Kevin Roose reported that over its six hours on Facebook, it was the second-most-engaged post on the platform, with 14 million views.[29] (The audiences for network news broadcasts, by comparison, range from 9 to 12 million.) A few hours after the presentation, President Trump tweeted the video to his 84.5 million followers. Donald Trump Jr. told his 5.3 million Twitter followers, This video is a much [sic] watch!!! So different from the narrative everyone is running with.[30] Trump redoubled his support at his press conference the following day, stating I think theyre very respected doctors.[31]

But major social media platforms reacted with relative speed. Facebook took the groups video down a few hours after it was posted, and Twitter and YouTube followed suit, all three on the grounds that the video violated their Covid-19 misinformation policies.[32] Twitter took the unusual step of suspending Trump Jr.s account for 12 hours.

Gold had built the original Americas Frontline Doctors website on a SquareSpace platform, but SquareSpace took it down. Gold rebuilt the website (omitting Stella Immanuel of demon sperm renown) and started raising money through PayPal and fundly.com. The doctors program also remained on the Tea Party Patriots site.

There was an additional reaction to the doctors frontline Covid credentials. MedPageToday, a peer-reviewed medical news site, was unable to find evidence that any of Americas Frontline Doctors in Washington had served in frontline emergency rooms during the Covid epidemic.[33] Simone Gold came under additional scrutiny. Her initial Whiskey Politics introduction described her as a frontline doctor in an inner-city emergency room that treated 150 patients a day, but neither her LinkedIn profile nor other available sources listed the emergency room in question. Her personal website (taken down amid the controversy but archived) described her as a Concierge Immediate Needs Physician working in C-Suite Medicine.[34]

On July 29, Cedars-Sinai, the backdrop for Golds Twitter video, issued a disavowal stating, Simone Gold, MD, has not worked with Cedars-Sinai Medical Center or any of its offices or affiliatessince 2015. For three weeks in late 2015, Dr. Gold was employedona per diem basis by Cedars-Sinai Medical Network, a component of Cedars-Sinai. She worked during this brief time in a network urgent careclinic.Dr. Gold is not authorized to represent or speak about any information on behalf of Cedars-Sinai.

The sharecare.com Find a Doctor site stated that Dr. Simone Gold, MD, is a[n] emergency medicine specialist in Los Angeles, CA. and is affiliated with Centinela Hospital Medical Center. But on July 31, Centinela Hospital posted a statement reading: Simone Gold, MD, is not credentialed as part of the Centinela Medical Staff, as she resigned her position here a number of years ago. Dr. Gold was never employed here as we dont employ our physicians.[35]

Also troubling was American Frontline Doctors repeated suggestion that patients should demand hydroxychloroquine from their doctors for Covid-19. The medication has been an important treatment for lupus and other autoimmune diseases, but the publicity around its application to Covid has created an ongoing shortage with devastating consequences.

Much of the mainstream coverage of Americas Frontline Doctors was devoted to Stella Immanuels demon sperm sermon, but alternative platforms were another story.

Simone Gold was reaching a vast new public and was now celebrated as a victim. On July 30, Fox Newss Tucker Carlson interviewed her on his nightly program. The crawl stated, Doctor Censored by Big Tech Has Now Lost Her Job (though that job was never specified)echoing Trumps executive order on Big Tech censorship released the previous day.[36] (Carlsons show is currently the highest-rated program on cable television, with an audience of over 4.3 million.[37])

Glenn Becks multi-platform media operation, The Blaze, covered the story on his radio program and posted the Tucker Carlson video on its website on July 31, with a companion piece repeating her case for hydroxychloroquine.[38] A similar report was posted the same day on CNS News, founded by Council for National Policy Executive Committee member L. Brent Bozell III.[39] (MediaPost recently named CNS News as the countrys fastest-growing conservative website, with more than 8.3 million unique visitors in June and over 1,000 percent gain in year-over-year unique visitors.[40]) Pat Robertsons CBN.com averages over four million unique visitors each month. Add these to Alex Joness August 21 coverageas well as legions of subsidiary platformsand you have a deadly misinformation campaign thats reaching tens of millions of voters, most of them off the radar of the national news media.

Emergency physician Nick Sawyer is disturbed by the implications for medical practitioners. The Americas Frontline Doctors campaign, he says, violates two of the primary principles of medical ethics. Medical ethics has four major principles: beneficence, non-maleficence, autonomy, and justice. As hydroxychloroquine offers no clinical benefit and may be harmful, it violates the first two tenets. Further, their statements place actual frontline physicians treating patients with Covid-19 in conflict with patients right to autonomy.

Patients have the right to make decisions regarding their medical care, but as more and more patients are askingif not outright demandingthat physicians prescribe hydroxychloroquine to them, it places these physicians in a position where they are faced with an ethical dilemma. We respect patients right to autonomy, but we are not willing to allow them to demand a treatment that is not helpful and may be harmful. In sum, Americas Frontline Doctors are introducing additional havoc into the already complex Covid-19 pandemic.

As of the publication deadlinefor this article, neitherJenny Beth Martin or Simone Gold had respondedto requests for comment.

The day after Golds Washington presentation, U.S. Covid-19 deaths stood at 140,309; they swelled to 147,653 only a week later.[41] Less than a month later, on August 21, Donald Trump addressed the Council for National Policy at the Ritz-Carlton in Pentagon City, his last major address before the Republican convention. In his opening remarks, he thanked several figures from the CNP, including Jenny Beth Martin, for your tremendous leadership of the CNP. Youve done a fantastic job.

As of that Friday, over 174,000 Americans had died of Covid-19. That number continues to climb.[42]

Anatomy of the People’s Manifesto: Out of box solutions to Ghana’s problem – GhanaWeb

Opinions of Tuesday, 8 September 2020

Columnist: Michael Sumaila Nlasia

The Peoples Manifest

Yesterday marked the launch of the much-awaited Peoples Manifesto of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

The leadership of the Party, the Manifesto Committee and all those who worked behind the scenes to bring to manifestation this extraordinary development policy, by way of the manifesto, deserve our congratulations and commendations.

The current disappointment of Ghanaians in the New Patriotic Party government: with the countless scoundrel of scandals such as Agyapa Royalty and PDS, the failure and collapse of businesses, the massive loss of jobs, the rapid depreciation of the cedi against the major foreign currencies and the crackdown of our national security presented the need to articulate a very comprehensive program to the Ghanaian electorates on how these problems will be solved.

This task caused the Party to set up the Manifesto Committee. The terms of reference of the Committee was structured on a bottom-up approach.

In other words, many of our Party supporters and sympathisers in the constituencies and branches and diverse sources of opinions of the Ghanaian population have some very interesting ideas to many of the issues coming out. They helped by harnessing their knowledge into furnishing the manifesto.

After all, a manifesto must speak to the aspirations of the people, and who better than the rank and file to articulate their ideas to the issues at hand? This is essential because when you go out to talk to the farmers, the fisher folks, nurses, doctors and all and sundry directly, you learn a lot.

And the suggestions they made were found tuned into the manifesto for the electorates to advance our center-left social democratic principle.More so, it shows the humility and the renewal of the leadership of the NDC.

The furore of Gabby Otchere Darko and the NPP that NDC lacks ideas or is not a better alternative has been rendered obsolete and superfluous; as it has rather sensed shivers to their spine knowing very well that the consultation led to clearer and a better understanding of the problems on the ground which the NPP does not want to appreciate as it is what has brought about this winning manifesto.

It is good that the NDC has shown that it is not an alternative by the mere fact that it is in opposition, but has demonstrated it has what it takes to manage and lead this country. It is rare to have a manifesto that reflects the will of the people.

That is why the NPP with its right-wing orientation latches heavily on center-left wing policies and uses semantics as social intervention programmes. But this only shows its bankruptcy in ideas, because it is infamous for its belief in unbridled capitalism and state capturing.

An example in the manifesto is the Youth Development Ministry to be established by the NDC.

This is a dream come true for the teeming Ghanaian youth who, for some reasons or the other, are having their talents frozen by populist ideas which have no potential for growth. A special honour goes to the youth leaders of the Party for spearheading such a remarkable social intervention policy.

The freak of power that made NPP win the 2016 general election has brought unto them contradictions demonstrating in the monumental failure of this government.

Overall this manifesto represents the felt needs of the people and the direction they ought to take for a better future. We must fully accept it to bring to birth a new and a prosperous Ghana.

Greys Anatomy has slowly begun production on season 17 after last season was cut short due to the unprecedented coronavirus pandemic.

And while fans had resigned themselves to the fact the final episodes wouldnt make it on the air as the show moves forward with a time jump, it turns out some of the previously filmed material will still make it into the new episodes after all.

Showrunner Kristva Vernoff explained to TVLine: In even the best of times, a television writers primary job is to know how to pivot.

We are not working to protect stories we had [planned] for the end of Season 16. That said, youwillget to see some of the immediate moments from where we left off.

She explained why she chose to incorporate some of the scenes from the unfinished episodes as she added: There was great material that we had already shot but did not get a chance to air [so] we found a way to build it into our premiere.

We already know the show is going to focus heavily on the effect Covid-19 had on frontline workers, but theres still going to be a whole lot of love as Ellen Pompeo revealed her favourite new couple in the upcoming season.

Can tell us something about todays table read? a fan tweeted the Meredith Grey actress testing their luck.

Ellen hit them back, writing: Yes I have a new favourite couple not sure what youll call them But they are adorable you guys can have fun guessing who!!

One fan quickly figured out the 50-year-olds clue, and wrote: Maggie and boyfriend?

Ding ding ding! the mum-of-three replied before adding: You guys You have no idea how adorable they are.

Maggie Pierce (Kelly McCreary) started making waves with Dr Winston Ndugu (Richard Hill) at the end of season 16 after meeting each other in a conference.

And by the looks of things, theyre about to fall hopelessly in love!

Whats Most Difficult About Playing A Doctor On Grey’s …

One of the things that medical shows, especially, have really tried to do is have an emphasis on how things actually work in a hospital and in surgery when such details are shown on camera. The goal, of course, is to have the procedures, equipment used, potential complications and everything else on Grey's Anatomy be as realistic as possible, so that viewers can really get into the stories without wondering too much about the authenticity of what they've seen. And, as Chandra Wilson said, one of the things the actors have to worry about is making sure that they respect the real professions they're portraying.

Grey’s Anatomy Is Losing A Star To Station 19, But Why …

While Grey's Anatomy and sister series Station 19 have been off the air for months and there is no news of when exactly they might be back on ABC with new episodes, there is some big news for both shows. Grey's is losing another star for the sake of the spinoff, and there are already questions about why exactly it is happening from a story perspective, and what it will entail. Stefania Spampinato, a.k.a. Dr. Carina DeLuca, is switching from a recurring actor on Grey's Anatomy to a series regular on Station 19.

Ellen Pompeo Reveals Her New Favorite Grey’s Anatomy …

Pompeo also responded to a fan who asked if season 17 would be about COVID-19, confirming what showrunner Krista Vernoff has previously said about the stories for the new season.

"Yes the biggest medical crisis the world has ever seen?" Pompeo tweeted. "Yes we are meeting the moment and telling some stories."

Vernoff has said that while she initially did not want to address the pandemic, the writers on her staff convinced her it would be "irresponsible" not to.

"[Doctors]were saying things like, kids, their first year out of medical school, are seeing more death in the first year than many doctors see in a decade, and it just felt like we had to tell this story," she said on THR's TV's Top 5 podcast. "We have to tell this story, and so the conversation became, how do we tell this very painful, brutal story that has hit our medical community so intenselyand as they keep saying, permanently changed medicine? How do we do that and provide some escapism? How do we do that and create romance and comedy and joy and fun?"

At the very least, it looks like the romance is still in the cards.

‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Season 17: Everything We Know So Far …

They were saying things like, kids, their first year out of medical school, are seeing more death in the first year than many doctors see in a decade, and it just felt like we had to tell this story, she continued. We have to tell this story, and so the conversation became, how do we tell this very painful, brutal story that has hit our medical community so intenselyand as they keep saying, permanently changed medicine? How do we do that and provide some escapism? How do we do that and create romance and comedy and joy and fun?

On September 4, Pompeo implied that covering COVID-19 was a no-brainer for the series after being asked about it by a fan. Yes, she replied. The biggest medical crisis the world has ever seen? Yes we are meeting the moment and telling some stories.

The new season begins one month and a half into pandemic. Actor Giacomo Gianniotti, who plays Dr. Andrew DeLuca, teased details of season 17's coronavirus storyline, telling Entertainment Tonight the series will start about a month and a half [into] full COVID,so it's going to take place a little beyond where we left off in the last season."

We might have some flashbacks, he continued. "We might have some things where we're referencing last season, just to havecontext leading up. But we are going to have a littleleap when we start this season in terms of time. We're not picking up right where we left off."

Sorry, there will be less kissing. Vernoff told THR its safe to say the kissing quotient will be down in season 17. Obviously, you cant have people making out, but theres been a lot of sex on Greys Anatomy that doesnt involve kissing, she said. There's a lot of sexy lifting of clothes, and pulling down of clothes, and taking off of things, and standing behind a person in a sexy way. Theres a lot of ways to skin a cat, so to speak.

A few actors are getting bumped up to series regulars. Richard Flood and Anthony Hill are officially Greys Anatomy series regulars, according to the Hollywood Reporter. Meanwhile, Stefania Spampinato, who plays DeLucas sister, Carina, will be transitioning to a series regular role on its firefighter spin-off, Station 19.

Richard Flood as Dr. Cormack Hayes with Ellen Pompeo as Meredith Grey

Flood plays Dr. Cormack Hayes, the widowed pediatric surgeon whose relationship with Meredith is giving us major enemies-to-lovers vibes, while Hill portrays Dr. Winston Ndugu, Maggies (Kelly McCreary) next love interest.

I am so excited to add Anthony Hill, Stefania Spampinato, and Richard Flood to the Station 19 and Greys Anatomy families, said Krista Vernoff, who serves as showrunner on both dramas. They are huge talents who made a big impact with our fans, with our casts, and with our writers, who are eager to write more for them.

This post will be updated as new information becomes available.

University subject profile: anatomy and physiology – The Guardian

What youll learnIf you want to get under the skin of the human body and delve into the functioning of everything from the skeletal structure to the nervous system, an anatomy or physiology degree might be for you. You could learn how cells develop, how limbs form in the right places, even how muscle groups are used in different sports. You may touch on hot topics such as cell cloning, genetic engineering or the impact of malaria or HIV on a human being.

Anatomy degrees will involve dissection of human and animal cadavers, while physiology involves the study of both the healthy body and the body as affected by disease research which can lead to the development of new medical treatments. Degree courses will impart an excellent knowledge of how the body works and can encompass a variety of disciplines including biology, genetics, immunology, embryology, neuroscience, pharmacology and disease processes.

How youll learnCourses are hands-on, so you could be doing anything from dissection classes to fieldwork or data analysis. As well as learning independently, youll probably need to complete group work, and a hefty original research project in the final year. Expect to spend lots of your time in lectures, seminars and laboratory practicals.

Entry requirementsMany universities will ask for at least two A-Levels (or equivalent) in biology, chemistry, physics or maths. Psychology may also be desirable.

What job can you get? Many graduates work as physiotherapists, or in fields such as cardiology, audiology, neurophysiology, or speech and language therapy.

Others undertake further study, sometimes in medicine or dentistry. If you love the academic side, a career in scientific research could be right up your street. This will require extra study, but you will be able to specialise in an area of particular interest. This doesnt always mean you need to stay in a university pharmaceutical companies, charities and government departments need researchers too.

Teaching is another option, while the analytical and data-handling skills youll gain should make you an attractive candidate for multinational corporations.

Penis, the copulatory organ of the male of higher vertebrates that in mammals usually also provides the channel by which urine leaves the body. The corresponding structure in lower invertebrates is often called the cirrus.

The Human Body

Which of these glands produces tears?

The human penis is anatomically divided into two continuous areasthe body, or external portion, and the root. The root of the penis begins directly below the bulbourethral glands with a long cylindrical body of tissue known as the corpus spongiosum (or corpus cavernosum urethrae). This tissue extends through the body of the penis to the tip, where it expands into a mushroom-shaped structure called the glans penis. Running through the centre of the corpus spongiosum is the urethra, a common passage for semen and urine; the urethra ends in a slitlike opening at the tip of the glans penis. Beginning alongside of the bulbourethral glands are a pair of long cylindrical bodies called the corpora cavernosa penis. These continue through the body of the penis, occupying the sides and upper portion directly above the corpus spongiosum; they terminate immediately before the glans penis.

The corpora cavernosa consist of empty spaces divided by partitions of tissue. The tissue consists of muscle, collagen (a fibrous protein), and elastic fibre. The corpora cavernosa are termed erectile tissue (see erection), because during sexual excitation, their fibrous tissue is expanded by blood that flows into and fills their empty spaces. The blood is temporarily trapped in the penis by the constriction of blood vessels that would normally allow it to flow out. The penis becomes enlarged, hardened, and erect as a result of this increased blood pressure. The corpus spongiosum is also considered erectile tissue. This area, however, does not become as enlarged as the other two during erection, for it contains more fibrous tissue and less space; unlike the corpora cavernosa, the corpus spongiosum has a constant blood flow during erection.

The corpora cavernosa and corpus spongiosum are enclosed by a circular layer of elastic tissue. This in turn is covered by a thin layer of skin. The skin, which is slightly darker in colour than the rest of the body, is loose and folded while the penis is in a flaccid state. At the beginning of the glans penis, a circular fold of skin, commonly called the foreskin (or prepuce), extends forward to cover the glans. At birth or during early childhood, the foreskin may be removed by an operation called circumcision.

In humans, the penis may be affected by various developmental abnormalities, diseases, or injury. Severe anomalies of the penis are rare; examples are the absence, torsion (twisting), and duplication of the penis. Other anomalies include an abnormally large penis, which typically is associated with precocious puberty, dwarfism, or an overactive pituitary, and a small penis, which may be associated with infantilism or undersecretion of the pituitary or pineal gland. Balanitis, or inflammation of the glans penis, and posthitis, or infection of the foreskin, result from the retention of secretions and bacteria beneath the foreskin and can be prevented with proper hygiene. Tumours of the penis are almost all of epithelial (covering or lining) origin and usually involve the foreskin (prepuce) or glans; penile cancer is infrequent among men who were circumcised during infancy.
