Anatomy of the first AFLW draft – Carlton Football Club

IN THE weeks and months preceding the inaugural AFLW Draft of October 2016 the eight foundation clubs, Carlton included, were permitted to cherry-pick their first players.

AFLW rules dictated that the clubs could specifically secure marquee signings on increased salaries across any state; priority players with existing club connections; and up to two rookies who had not participated in competitive Australian Rules in the three lead-up years.

On July 27, 2016, the clubs recruiters confirmed their first marquee signings the St Kilda Sharks (and future Carlton captain Brianna Davey) and the Darebin Falcons Darcy Vescio.

Permitted one priority selection, the club also went with Vescios teammate Lauren Arnell, whose name is forever consigned to history as Carltons first AFLW captain.

As fate would have it, Arnell originally hailed from East Ballarat, a short, ten-minute drive from Sebastopol - the old hometown of Jimmy Aitken who led the men of Carlton onto the Brunswick Street Oval for the clubs very first VFL match in May 1897.

Carlton used its rookie selections on the soccer player Nat Exon and basketballer Kate Shierlaw.

On October 12, 2016, a state-based draft was conducted; the draft order having been determined by random draw on September 29 of that year. The draft order operated in snake formation, with the club holding the first selection of the first round also holding the final selection of the second round, and so on.

The Blues went with Cranbournes Bianca Jakobsson as their first-round selection and three overall), Seafords Kate Gillespie-Jones (second round and 14th), Seafords Sarah Hosking (third round and 19th), Melbourne Unis Gabriella Pound (fourth round and 30th), Cranbournes Danielle Hardiman (fifth round and 35th), Diamond Creeks Shae Audley (sixth round and 46th), Bendigos Bella Ayre (seventh round and 51st), Diamond Creeks Lauren Brazzale (eighth round and 62nd), Cranbournes Breann Moody (ninth round and 67th), Seafords Jess Hosking (tenth round and 78th), Seafords Natalie Plane (eleventh round and 83rd), Bendigos Sarah Last (twelfth round and 94th), St Kilda Sharks Tilly Lucas-Rodd (thirteenth round and 99th), Diamond Creeks Katie Loynes (fourteenth round and 110th), Melbourne Universitys Madeline Keryk (15th round and 115th), Victorias Kate Darby (sixteenth round and 126th), Diamond Creeks Alison Downie (seventeenth round and 129th), Diamond Creeks Laura Attard (eighteenth round and 140th) and Eastern Devils Rebecca Privitelli (nineteenth round and 142nd).

Following the draft, two more players Bendigos Jess Kennedy and Hayley Trevean - were identified as undrafted/free agents to complement Carltons senior list of 25 players.

So where are they now?

Brianna Davey Davey, the former Matildas goalkeeper, took out her clubs best and fairest award in hers and the teams first season, as well as All-Australian honours. She was appointed Carlton captain in 2018, but after 17 matches in three seasons sought a trade to Collingwood.

Darcy Vescio Following in the footsteps of Carltons Wally Koochew more than 100 years before, Vescio, AFLWs first footballer of Chinese heritage, impacted from the outset - booting four goals (more than Collingwoods score) in that memorable first encounter before 18,000 people at Ikon Park. An AFWL leading goalkicker and All-Australian in 2017, the highly-visible Vescio is now 30 games and four seasons into her highlight-catching Carlton career.

Lauren Arnell Having previously worked at the club in an off-field role, including in the development of Carltons bid for a womens team licence, Arnell was named the club's inaugural AFL Women's captain and was first to break the banner in the historic opening round at Ikon Park. Replaced as captain by Brianna Davey the following year, she completed duties as vice-captain before furthering her career with Brisbane in a three-way deal involving Collingwood.

Nat Exon Another feted member of the inaugural AFLW match, in what would be her one and only season with the club, Exon was, together with Bella Ayre, traded to Brisbane in a complex arrangement involving four teams, five players, and a draft selection. In April 2019 and after two seasons with the Lions, Exon joined expansion club St Kilda along with Kate McCarthy.

Kate Shierlaw Having completed her debut in the second round of 2017, in a match with Greater Western Sydney at Ikon Park, Shierlaw was a fixture for the duration of the season. On the completion of season 2018, Shierlaw was delisted, but on the eve of the 2020 season was contracted by St Kilda and took on leadership duties as co-captain.

With Sarah Hosking having recently been traded to Richmond for an end-of-first-round draft selection, only eight of the original 25 squad members for Carltons inaugural 2017 season remain - Lauren Brazzale, Katie Loynes, Gabriella Pound, Jess Hosking, Breann Moody, Alison Downie, Natalie Plane and Darcy Vescio.

Grey’s Anatomy Showrunner Says COVID-19 Protocols Have Changed the "Feeling of the Show" – E! Online

Vernoff kept herinterview spoiler-free, but she did confirm that the premiere, a two-hour crossover event with Station 19, will find the characters weeks into the pandemic. It will also include flashbacks to life before COVID-19. While she was originally hesitant to include coronavirus in the storyline, citing viewers' "fatigue," her colleagues in the writers' room encouraged her to think differently.

She said that co-executive producer Lynne E. Litt told her, "I think it's the biggest medical story of our lifetimes." And Naser Alazari, a doctor on the writing staff, echoed her statement. According to Vernoff, he said, "This is the biggest medical story of our lifetime, and it is changing medicine permanently. And we have to tell this story."

These days, it's safe to say the doctor knows best.

Season 17 of Grey's Anatomy premieres on Thursday, Nov. 12 at 9 p.m. ET on ABC.

WVSOM faculty member recognized as Professor of the Year finalist – mountainmessenger.com

A faculty member at the West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine (WVSOM) was a finalist in a program designed to reward innovation and creativity at West Virginias higher education institutions.

Peter Ward, Ph.D., a professor of anatomy in WVSOMs biomedical sciences department, was one of five finalists for the Faculty Merit Foundations 2019 Professor of the Year award. Ward said he was grateful for the statewide acknowledgement of his devotion to students.

Being recognized as a finalist for such a prestigious award is a great honor, he said. I hope that I, or another WVSOM faculty member, can again bring the Professor of the Year Award to Lewisburg to showcase the quality of our educators.

Ward has been a WVSOM faculty member since 2005. In addition to instructing first-year students in anatomy labs and lectures, he leads an anatomy elective in which third- and fourth-year students conduct focused investigations on topics relevant to their future residencies. He has served on numerous WVSOM faculty committees, was faculty chair from 2018 to 2020 and operates the schools plastination facility, which produces anatomical specimens for educational use. Ward also has worked with Bone Clones, a company that casts simulated human and animal bones from polyurethane resin, to create commercially distributed models illustrating bone injuries.

Ward spent three years as the association secretary for the American Association of Clinical Anatomists. He is nearing the completion of a textbook for which he is the sole author, Clinical Anatomy Explained Netters Musculoskeletal System, an Integrated Anatomical Text, for use at medical schools that, like WVSOM, use an integrated curriculum.

This was Wards second time as a finalist for Professor of the Year. He was previously selected as a finalist in 2016. He said he credits his success as a professor to using interesting techniques to engage with students.

My focus has always been on finding new ways to teach the anatomical sciences effectively, Ward said. That could mean making videos to explain difficult concepts, or being able to make a pop culture reference that allows students to suddenly have a lightbulb moment to understand how things work. Youre always looking for novel ways to explain complicated things.

Ward has received numerous awards in his time with the osteopathic medical school, including five Atlas Club Golden Key Awards, three OPP Integration Faculty Teaching Awards and two Presidents Awards of Excellence for Faculty Achievement. Earlier this year he received the WVSOM Presidents Outstanding Employee Award, which recognizes employees for exceptional and dedicated service to the school.

The Faculty Merit Foundations Professor of the Year typically is named at a spring banquet, but the COVID-19 pandemic caused the events cancellation and delayed the announcement. The program is intended to bring outstanding achievements among the faculties of West Virginias public and private colleges and universities to the attention of the public.

Issa Rae, BTS and ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ lead nominations for the People’s Choice Awards – The Loop

The nominations are out for the Peoples Choice Awards and the biggest films, TVs and songs of the years are all being honoured. The annual event, which will air live on E! on Sunday, November 15 at 9 p.m., has added several new categories this year and announced Jennifer Lopez as the recipient of the Peoples Icon Award.

Issa Rae leads this years acting nominations, earning nods for both TV and film. The writer and actor is up for Female Movie Star of the Year and Comedy Movie Star of the Year for The Lovebirds and Drama Star of the Year for The Photograph. Rae also received a Comedy TV Star nomination for the fourth season of her dramedy Insecure, which is up for Comedy Show.

Charlize Therons hugely successful 2020 action film The Old Guard nabbed the Oscar winner a Female Movie Star and Action Movie Star nomination. Theron is up against Birds of Prey: And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn actor Margot Robbie in both categories. Jamie Foxx and his role in Project Power also earned the Oscar winner a Male Movie Star and Action Movie Star nomination, two categories Bad Boys For Life star Will Smith is also being recognized in.

On the TV side, fan favourite Greys Anatomy has a total of four nominations this year. The medical drama, which returns to CTV on November 12, is up for Show of 2020 and Drama Show of 2020. Ellen Pompeo and Jessie Williams have also been nominated for their work as Dr. Meredith Grey and Dr. Jackson Avery. This Is Us also earned nominations for Show of 2020 and Drama Show of 2020. Mandy Moore will face off against her This Is Us co-star Sterling K. Brown for Drama TV Star, with Brown also nominated for Male TV Star.

Talk shows, late night and reality series are being recognized by the PCAs, including The Masked Singer, which earned Show of 2020, Competition Show of 2020 and Competition Contestant of 2020 nominations for Kandi Burruss and Rob Gronkowski. Kelly Clarkson earned her first Daytime Talk Show nomination for the premiere season of The Kelly Clarkson Show and is also up for Competition Show of 2020 for her work as a coach on The Voice, which returns to CTV with Season 19 on October 19. Clarksons The Voice co-star Blake Shelton also earned two nominations this year for Male Artist of 2020 and Country Artist of 2020.

Also on the music side, K-Pop groups BTS and BlackPink will go head to head for Group of the Year and Song of the Year. BTS are also nominated for Album of the Year and Song of the Year for their recent single Dynamite. Megan Thee Stallion earned an impressive six nominations this year, coming in just behind Lady Gaga and Justin Bieber, who both have seven nominations.

Kendall Jenner and sister Kim Kardashian-West are both nominated for Style Star of 2020, a category that also includes Janelle Mone, Lady Gaga, Lil Nas X, Rihanna and Dune stars Timothee Chalamet and Zendaya.

Voting opens today for fans who want to make their voice heard and help choose who should take home this years awards. The PCAs have a total of 44 categories for 2020 following the addition of three awards, including The New Artist of 2020, The Collaboration Song of 2020 and The Soundtrack Song of 2020. ‘Grey’s Anatomy’: People Really Hated Callie When She First Appeared on the Show – Showbiz Cheat Sheet

The medical drama Greys Anatomy has been wildly popular from the day that it first aired, and most of the characters have become fan favorites. Although we have seen many people come and go over the years, it almost seems as if just about all of them were unique and special in some sort of way.

It is always sad to see a character go, but when new people arrive at Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital, fans are usually pretty eager to see what they will bring to each storyline, and most are on the edge of their seats with anticipation.

Actor Sara Ramirez was able to charm millions of viewers during her time on Greys Anatomy, but it turns out things werent so great in the beginning. Lets discuss why people really hated Callie when she first appeared on the show.

For those who dont know, lets take the time to talk about just who Callie Torres is. She made her first appearance in the second season of Greys Anatomy and definitely took the other characters by storm.

As the head of orthopedic surgery, Torres had an important role, and she cultivated her personal relationships as well. During her time on the show, the character married and divorced Dr. George OMalley, and their relationship wasnt exactly the most open and honest.

It was after a decade of portraying Torres that Ramirez left the show at the end of Season 12 when her character reconciled with her ex-wife and daughter and ultimately moved to New York.

It may seem pretty hard to believe, but when Torres first made her appearance on the popular show, she wasnt exactly welcomed with open arms.

According to Reddit, fans felt that she was pretty annoying and even desperate, and she was actually one of the most disliked characters on Greys Anatomy. It stayed that way for a few seasons, and even with her personal relationships, viewers always thought that she was a bit too clingy for their preference.

Apparently, there wasnt much chemistry between Torres and her significant others, and it didnt go unnoticed. However, by the 4th season, things began to change and fans saw Torres in a new light. She eventually became one of the most coveted characters on the show.

Since Torres was able to get on the good of so many fans, it is no surprise that her departure affected people so deeply.

The actor released a statement via ABC News saying that Im deeply grateful to have spent the last 10 years with my family at Greys Anatomy and ABC, but for now, Im taking some welcome time off.

So, how exactly did fans feel about this? It was pretty emotional, and according to Closer Weekly, quite a few tears were shed during her final appearance. The storyline was deep and personal, and it was like saying goodbye to a beloved friend.

Looks as even though Callie may have slightly rubbed people the wrong way at first, she was able to turn the tables in her favor, and win over the hearts of many.

The actor appeared in several television shows, including The Mindy Project, CSI: Miami, and Barney & Friends. Her endeavors certainly werent limited to television, and she was cast in roles in Bad Kids of Crestview Academy, The Walking Deceased, and Military Man.

Ali captured the attention of millions of viewers when she appeared in Greys Anatomy, in a role that no one will soon forget.

Why did she leave the successful show after several years of being a fan favorite? According to the executive producer Krista Vernoff via Carter Matt: Being a part of Greys Anatomycan be a wonderfully rewarding experience, but also challenging. She also goes on to say that Its a show with a huge cast, including a number of established leads. Its hard to find a way to get a ton of time to stand out there.

Hopefully, some of Alis new projects will allow her to do just that.

For those who dont know, Qadris exit from the show was pretty dramatic, with her having been fired after an intense confrontation with Miranda Bailey.

According to Reddit, it left her with missed opportunities regarding her relationship with Jackson Avery, and fans arent happy.

Although it was pretty abrupt and millions of viewers would have preferred that Ali remain on Greys Anatomy, it looks like the talented actress is pursuing other avenues that will allow her to succeed at what she does, and she will be absolutely fine.

‘Grey’s Anatomy’: Camilla Luddington Thanks Fans For the ‘Jo Love’ on Her Character’s Anniversary – Showbiz Cheat Sheet

Its been more than 15 years sinceGreys Anatomypremiered on ABC. Many beloved characters have come and gone throughout the series, while a few others have stuck around. One actor who joined several seasons in but quickly earned the hearts of fans is Camilla Luddington. Discover what she said to fans on a special anniversary.

Luddingtons character is introduced as Jo Wilson. An intern, she grows close to Dr. Alex Karev. They discover that they have something in common both had difficult childhoods and spent time living out of their cars. Their initial friendship grows soon blooms into a romance.

BeforeGreys Anatomy, Luddington had appeared in a handful of projects. Aside from episodes of series such as proceduralCSI and soap operaDays of Our Lives, she was perhaps best known for portraying Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge, in the Lifetime flickWilliam & Kate: The Movie.

Every character onGreys Anatomyhas a complicated past, but Jos is one that resonates strongest with fans. Then came seasons 15 and 16. Jo finds her birth mother, learning the truth about her birth father, and eventually checks into a mental health facility after dealing with depression. After she and Alex finally tie the knot, he leaves her to be with his ex-wife, Izzie, and raise their children. Many fans felt the character deserved better.

Luddingtons debut episode as Jo (in what was, at the time, a recurring role) was theGreys AnatomySeason 9 premiere. The episode first aired on Sept. 27, 2012. (Almost exactly one year later, on Sept. 26, 2013, the season 10 premiere her first episode as a starring cast member aired.)

In celebration of the eighth anniversary of the date, a fan on Twitter wrote, today 8 years ago jo wilson joined greys anatomy, @camilluddington thank you for playing this beloved character. The actor responded. Wow!!!!!!! I didnt know this! Filming my 9th season now and so thankful for the jo love all these years.

As Luddington noted,Greys AnatomySeason 17 is underway. Production on season 16 was shut down in early March 2020, amid precautions taken against the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. The planned 25-episode season was cut short, ending with episode 21, Put on a Happy Face.

While those working on the series have not revealed much about the season to come, showrunner Krista Vernoff said it will address coronavirus. Theyre talking about it as war a war that they were not trained for, she said in a conversation for theTelevision Academyin July 2020.

Exercise identified as key to halting progress from diabetes to heart disease – Study – Voxy

An international study led by the University of Otago has revealed how exercise can reduce the chance of diabetes leading on to heart disease.

The research has identified that exercise triggers the release of small sequences of genetic code in the heart called microRNA, which increase protein production to improve heart structure and function.

The study 'Exercise regulates microRNAs to preserve coronary and cardiac function in the diabetic heart has recently been published in the prestigious journal Circulation Research, one of the worlds leading publications in the field of cardiovascular medicine.

Associate Professors Daryl Schwenke and Rajesh Katare, of Otagos Department of Physiology, found that specific microRNA are adversely altered in the early stages of diabetes. These altered microRNA can reliably predict the inevitable onset of heart disease. Associate Professor Katare believes this is a pivotal new development as microRNA can serve as a reliable early biomarker for heart disease in diabetes.

"Weve proven that by using exercise as a treatment, we can increase good microRNA, and reduce bad microRNA from causing damage. Exercise effectively improves regulation of microRNA to prevent the onset and progression of heart disease," Associate Professor Schwenke says.

Along with highlighting the role of exercise in regulating microRNA, the study also shows that microRNA are a potential novel target for the therapeutic treatment of heart disease in people with chronic diabetes.

"By increasing the good microRNA using pharmacological drugs it is possible to effectively reduce heart disease in diabetic subjects. This approach is not solely reliant on exercise," Associate Professor Schwenke says.

Over 250,000 thousand New Zealanders have diabetes according to the Ministry of Health, which defines diabetes as a serious health challenge to our country.

Associate Professor Schwenke believes this research has clear long-term benefits on both the quality of life for diabetic patients with heart disease, as well as alleviating the economic burden associated with current treatment of diabetes.

"By understanding the physiological role of microRNA we can see without doubt the positive role of exercise in preventing diabetic heart disease," he adds.

The study is a collaboration between the University of Otago, Japans National Cardiovascular Research Institute, and the Synchrotron Radiation Research Institute, also of Japan.
