Kathrine Heigl's reputation took a hitafter she abstained from Emmy's nomination in 2008 for the supporting role in Grey's Anatomy. According to Meaww, in 2008 Heigl released a statement that she did not feel she was given the material in that season 4 to warrant an Emmy nomination and in an effort to maintain the integrity of the academy organization, she withdrew her name from contention. Even though she clarified that her statement had more to do with her own performance than the show's writing, the media did not stop paying close attention to her. Soon enough, she gained the reputation of being 'difficult' to work with.

Years after the incident in 2016, in an appearance on The Howard Stern Show, Heigl saidshe was not feeling very good about her work during that season.As a nominated actor, she was supposed to submit her work and she did not submit any because she could not find anything she felt good about. When the story of her opting out for Emmy blew up, she was really embarrassed by her statement and immediately apologized to the Grey Anatomys showrunner Shona Rhimes. Heigl clarified that she did not think it would become as much a big deal if she did not submit for the nomination. After it became huge news, she felt obliged to make a statement on it,which did notgo very well.During the interview, she mentioned that when she was working in an independent film, she was afraid of saying anything. She recalled wearing shoes that were too small because she was afraid to tellthe wardrobe that they werent big enough asshe did not want to be labelled difficult.

Katherine Heigl was arguably one of the most famous television stars for the character of Dr. Izzie Stevens on Shonda Rhimes hit medical drama Greys Anatomy. Anatomy of a separation: How the Warriors failed to make the most of Roger Tuivasa-Sheck – New Zealand Herald

When Roger Tuivasa-Sheck signed for the Warriors almost six years ago, it should have been the start of a golden era for the Mt Smart club. But it never quite happened.

A carousel of coaches and assistant coaches, the ownership saga and shareholder disputes, a constantly rotating roster, poor recruitment decisions and some injury misfortune have seen the Warriors mostly struggle since his arrival.

While Tuivasa-Sheck has delivered, he's been part of an organisation that hasn't been able to match his standards of dedication and professionalism.

Michael Burgess examines how it could have all been so different.

The 21-year-old was an emerging superstar. His switch to fullback at the Roosters had been a revelation and landing his signature, confirmed in April 2015, was a massive coup.

Tuivasa-Sheck saw the club's potential, as they had finished ninth in 2014, missing the finals on points differential. Alongside a desire to live in Auckland, Tuivasa-Sheck was sold on chief executive Jim Doyle's legacy pitch.

Doyle told him that while winning a grand final with the Roosters was special, being part of the first Warriors team to land the NRL premiership would still be talked about in "50 years".

The Warriors were flying high in mid-July 2015, fourth on the NRL ladder after a memorable win over the Storm.

But they lost Shaun Johnson with a season-ending ankle injury in the following game and never recovered, dropping their last eight matches in an awful run.

Instead of arriving at Mt Smart with something to build on and the club on a high, Tuivasa-Sheck walked into an environment with more questions than answers and coach Andrew McFadden under intense pressure.

Tuivasa-Sheck had a short pre-season, coming off the 2015 Kiwis tour of England. He had carried a heavy load on that trip, with an added playmaking role in the absence of Johnson, Kieran Foran and Thomas Leuluai.

The Warriors lost their first three games, including a shock defeat to the Tigers, but then started to turn the corner, with Tuivasa-Sheck scoring the winning try to defeat his old club in Gosford.

That optimism turned sour in round seven, when the fullback tore his anterior cruciate ligament playing against the Bulldogs in Wellington.

"It's the cruel side of football we've certainly had more than our share of bad luck," noted McFadden.

Tuivasa-Sheck was desperately missed. The Warriors were still seventh equal in mid-August, despite three golden point defeats, but lost their last four matches to miss the playoffs by three points. McFadden was axed, replaced by Stephen Kearney.

The club's dogged pursuit of Foran ahead of the 2017 season like Sam Tomkins a few years before illustrated a misplaced obsession with the spine. It was also a major gamble, as the club hierarchy poured massive amounts of time, energy and resources into Foran, who was rehabilitating mentally and physically after his exit from Parramatta.

But more importantly, the most pressing need was a dominant leader in the pack.

It was symptomatic of decisions made between 2015 and 2019, when the Warriors were either unable or unwilling - to land the big fish they needed, to provide the platform for Tuivasa-Sheck's talents.

Instead, there were puzzling decisions; signing Kiwi international Gerard Beale, when they already had Peta Hiku and other centres and throwing big money at Adam Blair when, for all his qualities, he wasn't the yardage forward they required.

Coaches and management would talk tough, but it was the likes of Tuivasa-Sheck that had to battle behind a pack that rarely dominated.

"We don't have the biggest forward pack, but can still do damage with the forwards we have," said the diplomatic captain ahead of the 2020 season.

Tuivasa-Sheck was a surprise choice as skipper before the 2017 season.

Kearney correctly saw his potential, though it added to the burden for a marquee man who had barely played for the club.

While Tuivasa-Sheck embraced the role, it was a brutal season. Seven defeats in their first 11 games ended any playoff ambitions and they didn't win a game after the 23rd of June, with a club-record nine consecutive losses.

Playing on home soil, the tournament was meant to be a career highlight for Tuivasa-Sheck but it turned into a nightmare.

Coach David Kidwell was out of his depth and defections, injuries and withdrawals severely weakened the Kiwis squad, who were beaten by Tonga then stunned by Fiji.

After witnessing the fervour, hype and packed stadiums that had greeted the British Lions tour earlier that year, Tuivasa-Sheck noted the contrast playing in front of a half-empty Wellington stadium for the miserable quarter-final loss.

The Warriors had high hopes playing in their first finals match since 2011, but they evaporated when Tuivasa-Sheck limped off in the 28th minute against Penrith.

The team was already struggling the forward pack couldn't assert themselves and halves Johnson and Blake Green were poor but were only trailing 14-12, before the loss of their talismanic captain.

Tuivasa-Sheck, who had become the first Warrior to claim the Dally M medal, had a wonderful season, setting the tone in the first game with an incredible defensive stop against the Rabbitohs.

Tuivasa-Sheck played in nine playoff matches at the Roosters but has only one finals appearance for the Warriors.

Johnson's departure had massive ramifications.

It remains one of the biggest strategic blunders in the club's history; even if it was decided Johnson wasn't the long-term option, to engineer a situation where the halfback demanded an early release was a lose-lose situation.

Instead of building on 2018 where the club finished two points behind the minor premiers the Warriors floundered.

Their attack lost creativity and punch without Johnson the right edge had been near unstoppable in 2018 and Tuivasa-Sheck had to carry an increased burden, as the major source of offensive inspiration.

It was meant to be a consolidation year, with another finals appearance, but they were out of the picture in 13th place.

The 2019 failure meant Kearney, the football staff and the team were under more pressure, especially with ambitious new owner Mark Robinson.

But Tuivasa-Sheck didn't shirk; instead he wrote a three-page plan, which he presented to chief executive Cameron George and other management staff.

"I wrote my own report about how I see the club going, and how I was going," he said in January 2020.

"I took the way we went [in 2019] really personally and really want us to do better."

The Covid-19 pandemic, then the abrupt sacking of Kearney, caused major upheaval for the Warriors but also exhibited the qualities of Tuivasa-Sheck.

His leadership was outstanding, and his playing standards never dropped, as they transformed into a more consistent outfit under Todd Payten.

But it was probably the final straw for Tuivasa-Sheck.

As well as being marooned away from his family, he carried a captaincy load unmatched in the NRL.

Tuivasa-Sheck enjoys that challenge, but the thought of several more years of upheaval was maybe too much to contemplate.

$25 million donation to fund brain science research at Brown – The Brown Daily Herald

A $25 million gift from an anonymous donor will support new, innovative research projects in the field of brain science at the University. The donation will also fund the Innovation Awards Program at the Robert J. and Nancy D. Carney Institute for Brain Science.

Research, discovery and innovation is a long-term process, Diane Lipscombe, director of the Carney Institute for Brain Science and professor in neuroscience, said. Gifts like this stimulate the leading edge of a field where we have phenomenal researchers already. It will season the existing momentum.

Although the distribution of the gift is still being discussed, a portion of the funds will be devoted to computational brain science research. A lot of progress has been made regarding the computational functions of the nervous center, especially the brain, but we are only scratching the surface, Director of the Carney Center for Computational Science Michael Frank said.

Computational brain science research has the potential to expand across different fields, according to Frank. In his own research lab, Frank applies machine learning to study psychiatry and neurology through a computational approach, which can help inform the development of pharmaceuticals and other therapies for mental health.

Another way this gift can impact promising research is through the Innovation Awards Program, which invests in early research projects. One key element to stimulate innovation is by putting some resources into ideas at the point of inception, Lipscombe said.

The National Institutes of Health is typically more conservative, funding less risky, long-term projects with more data, Lipscombe said. We want to fill in the gap between the point of establishing creative ideas and receiving stable funding.

University Professor of Brain Science Alexander Jaworski, a recipient of an Innovation Award in 2015-16, has identified the molecules that determine the assembly of neurons with his lab. Through this research, the researchers discerned the evolutionary history of such molecules.

Discoveries like Jaworskis have applications across multiple disciplines. From a human health perspective, our work can help understand the etiology of neurodevelopmental disorders, and it can inform therapeutic approaches to repair networks of neurons in the brain, Jaworski wrote in an email to The Herald.

Jaworski currently aims to use computational methods to uncover how dynamic changes in gene expression impact neural function. This work will benefit from the expansion of resources, computational infrastructure and faculty collaboration in the brain science field, according to Jaworski.

A gift of this size is obviously a huge vote of confidence for brain science at Brown, Jaworski wrote. It can serve as a great recruiting tool and elevate computational neuroscience at Brown to the next level.

Flow Neuroscience, creator ofa medically approved brain stimulation device to treat depression at home,has acquired the assets of Halo Neuroscience, a US-based company developing brain stimulation technology to optimise performance and wellbeing.

The acquisition of Halos technology, R&D and patents aims to advance Flows research into treatment for depression and other mental health disorders.

Flow Neuroscience will build on the years of research that Halo has undertaken in conjunction with US universities, and will continue to build strong ties with the scientific community in the neuromodulation space. Applying this research, Flow Neuroscience intends to enhance its current medically certified tDCS headset for depression and will collaborate with clinicians toaddress otherpressing medical needs such as rehabilitation and motor impairment.

DanielMansson, CEO and co-founder of Flow Neuroscience, and clinical psychologist, said: Our aim is to dramatically improve the lives of people who struggle with their mental health. People diagnosed with depression have been found to have lower neural activity in the left frontal lobe, the area of the brain controlling cognitive skills and emotional expression. Flows headset uses tDCS to deliver a constant, low direct current via electrodes to stimulate neurons to that area. The headset is used in conjunction with Flowsdepression app, which is based on psychological research and neuroscience, guiding users through a series of personalised exercises informed by behavioural therapy.

Halos patented tDCS headset stimulates the motor cortex, an area in the brain involved in the planning, control, and execution of voluntary movements. Over the past two years, Halo has been working with leading researchers including theNeural Engineering Groupat The City College of New Yorkand theAir Force Research Laboratoryin Ohio to further develop its neuromodulation technology to improve not only movement, but cognitive performance and mental well-being.

By acquiring Halos technology, Flow aims to progress its tDCS capabilities to be able to expand treatment to include mental health issues that are commonly comorbid with depression.

Study uncovers the effect of media professionalization on cognitive neurodynamics – News-Medical.Net

Professionalization in any field requires long-term experience and training. In the past decades, studies have demonstrated that the professionalization of athletes and artists create differences in the behavior of the brain while carrying out activities related to their area of expertise.

To detect the effects of media professionalization in the brain, a research team from the Universitat Autnoma de Barcelona, the Instituto Rdio Televisi Espanyola and the Universidad Pablo de Olavide in Seville conducted a study published in Frontiers in Systems Neuroscience in which audiovisual contents were presented to a group of media professionals and a control group, with the aims of registering and analyzing their brain activity. The study covers what happens to professionals in audiovisuals when they view media works, using a triple approach: eyeblink rate, electrical activity of the brain and functional connectivity.

Researchers observed that audiovisual cuts have a greater impact on media professionals, generating a decrease in their eyeblink rate, while non-professionals are not affected in the same manner when viewing these cuts. They also detected that the experience of media professionals has a greater effect on the brain's mu rhythm in the somatosensory area immediately after a cut. Non-media professionals, however, demonstrate a highly diverse Granger causality in terms of connectivity when compared to their media professional counterparts, whose connectivity is much more concise in the visual cortex, somatomotor and frontal areas.

Videos and other audiovisual contents are filled with cuts that artificially segment narrative content. Films can contain dozens or hundreds of cuts and viewers are nevertheless not conscious of them. Previous studies conducted by the same team of researchers demonstrated that scene cuts have an impact on the management of viewer's attention. In this study, researchers aimed to discover how this impact differs among media professionals. The experience acquired through years of producing and working with media contents causes a long-term impact on how professionals process these contents. Given that society produces and consumes more and more of these types of contents, there is an interest in discovering the effects the visual perception of these contents have on brain activity.

Doctor Celia Andreu-Snchez, head researcher of this study and member of the Neuro-Com Group at the Universitat Autnoma de Barcelona, considers that the results can be of interest for neuroscience, given that "knowing that spending many hours with media works as a professional not only affects visual perception, but also the brain rhythms such as the mu rhythm, is without a doubt of great interest to science. These results present neuroscience with a highly important work tool: audiovisuals. We know that working and consuming these contents professionally affect the brain's behavior, therefore, it seems plausible that the design of consumption strategies for videos may be relevant in several areas of neuroscience research".

Doctor Miguel ngel Martn-Pascual, from the Instituto Radio Televisin Espaola and the Universitat Autnoma de Barcelona, also author of this research published in Frontiers in Systems Neuroscience, believes that these results are of utmost importance in the professional audiovisual production field.

Knowing the impact audiovisual professionalization has on its professionals is of vital importance for the development of long-term strategies related to the occupational health of this group".

Jos Mara Delgado, researcher at the Neuroscience Division of the Universidad Pablo de Olavide, highlights that "this study and other similar ones conducted by our two groups points out the enormous amount of unconscious processing taking place in the brain (particularly in the non-media professional group) during the viewing of videos and films, especially when the material is edited to contain very short scenes. However, in some way this unconscious processing can have an effect, for example, on our emotional state: although we do not fully perceive all the shots in the video as displaying aggressive interactions, we are able to detect them from an emotional point of view".

This study was developed by the Neuro-Com Research Group of the Universitat Autnoma de Barcelona, the Instituto Radio Televisin Espaola and the Neuroscience Division of the Universidad Pablo de Olavide in Seville. It was conducted under the framework of public grants from the Spanish Ministry for Economics and Competitiveness and from the Regional Government of Andalusia.

Over the past century there have been several paradigms or patterns of explanation by which philosophers and neuroscientists have tried to understand the mind.

Behaviorism was the view that the input to and output from the nervous system was all that mattered. The mind was deemed irrelevant to science. Behaviorism was eclipsed by realityit was more or less demolished in the 1960s by Noam Chomsky (1928), who pointed out that language could not be understood in behaviorist terms. The study of the mind is indispensable to linguistics, neuroscience and philosophy. That this needed to be said is a scandal in itself.

Identity theory the view that mental states are identical to brain states was the rage for several decades, until it was acknowledged that in order to be identical, mind states would have to be the same as brain states, which they arent.

Eliminative materialism the belief that the mind does not exist has had a run for a couple of decades as well. Materialists acknowledged that they had no material explanation for the mind. But rather than jettison materialism, they jettisoned the mind. I predict that eliminative materialism will have a short shelf life, as more effective psychiatric care becomes available.

The theory that survived all of this debate seems to be functionalism. Functionalism is the view that what makes something a mental state is the role it plays its function in a cognitive system. Functionalism is often explained colloquially as the mind is what the brain does.

Functionalism bears a superficial resemblance to the Aristotelian understanding of the soul, which is one of its strengths. Aristotle said the soul is the active principlethe powers, so to speakof a human being. Colloquially, we might say the Aristotelian view is that the mind is the spectrum of cognitive abilities of a human being. Aristotelian psychology* makes sense and corresponds well with the results of modern neuroscience. I think it is the best understanding we have of the mind.

Functionalism differs, however, from Aristotelian psychology and the differences are fatal for the functionalist understanding of the mind. There are two major reasons functionalism fails.

1.Functionalist theories generally describe mental states as functions of brain states, rather then as functions of human beings as a whole. This is the mereological fallacythe erroneous attribution of powers of the whole to its parts. Only human beings see, hear, remember, understand, and will. Brains do brain thingsgenerate action potentials, secrete neurotransmitters, metabolize glucose, etc.

It simply makes no sense to say that brains think, so the assertion that the mind is what the brain does is not merely wrong. It is, literally, nonsense, analogous to saying that feet run (ignoring the rest of the body) or that the ability to smell is a square root. Its gibberish.

2.The most common version of functionalism is computer functionalism. Computer functionalism is the assertion that the brain and mind are a form of computation such that the brain and the mind bear the relation of hardware to software. This is also nonsense the brain is not a computer and the mind is not a computation. The brain can be studied using computational models, but to call the brain a computer is just nonsense. Voting patterns can be studied using computational models but that doesnt mean that voters are computers.

The most egregious error in computer functionalism (as if being nonsensical were not egregious enough) is the assertion that the mind is a kind of computation. Computation is the algorithmic matching of an input to an output. The hallmark of computation is that it is blind to meaning that is, it matches signal to signal, regardless of the semantic content of the signal. A word processing program works just as well for an essay expressing a yea opinion as it does for an essay expressing a nay opinion. Computation is blind to meaning.

Mental states, on the other hand, always have meaning. That is, thoughts always point to an object to a tree perceived, or to a person loved, to a concept understood or a goal pursued.

Not only is it untrue to say that the mind is computation but the mind is the opposite of computation. Computation always lacks meaning and the mind always has meaning. The computer functionalist couldnt be more wrong.

As I noted, I have some sympathy for functionalism because, although it is deeply flawed, it is an effort to explain the mind as abilities, which is a good start toward genuine insight. But theres no reason to embrace functionalism when there is a much more acceptable and profound theory of mind Aristotles clear and cogent view that mental states are the cognitive powers of a human being is on tap.

Comets Honor MLK’s Legacy with Help for Hungry, Heartfelt Words on Day of Service – University of Texas at Dallas

Handwritten greetings were among the 200 cards that UT Dallas students, faculty and staff made for health care workers and isolated seniors in North Texas during the Universitys day of service.

Volunteers delivered food and supplies for the Comet Cupboard and made cards for health care workers and isolated older adults as part of The University of Texas at Dallas annual day of service to honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

During the Jan. 29 project, donors dropped off 361 food and personal care items for the campus food pantry, while virtual volunteers created 200 cards to say thank you to Parkland Health & Hospital System workers and to provide encouragement to seniors at various locations throughout the Dallas-Fort Worth area.

The Comet Cupboard provides weekly distributions of food and personal care items to enrolled UTDallas students in need. Many volunteers who were not able to deliver items for the food pantry were grateful to be able to contribute by making cards at home, said Anne Hart, program coordinator in the Office of Student Volunteerism.

Through our cards, we hope to express our support and gratitude to our local health care workers who are working around-the-clock to take care of our community, Hart said. Ultimately, our cards will help to foster Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.s vision of a beloved community and allow us to connect with each other during a time when connection seems quite fragmented.

The event, which was adjusted this year to accommodate volunteers in person and virtually, was sponsored by the Multicultural Center in the Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion and the Office of Student Volunteerism. The MLK Day of Service was created in 2018 to fulfill Kings challenge for people to help their communities.

What better way to be that [beloved] community that we talked about than to help our Comet family by supporting our community.

With the theme of Moving from Injustice to Justice, this years Dream Week events also included a session of Comets Cultural Conversations. The event featured guest speaker Priscilla Escobedo, special collections archivist at UTArlington and a board member of the Dallas Mexican American Historical League. The celebration breakfast, sponsored by the Multicultural Center and the Student Union & Activities Advisory Board, featured speaker Dr. Froswa Booker-Drew, founder and CEO of Soulstice Consultancy and vice president of community affairs & strategic alliances for the State Fair of Texas.
