Four Ways to Tell a Prophet From a Political Puppet – Word&Way – Word and Way

(RNS) In the streets of Washington, D.C., we have seen religion used as a political prop and we have seen it exercise its prophetic voice.

On June 1, President Donald Trump infamously had the street in front of the White House cleared of protesters so he could use St. Johns Episcopal Church on Lafayette Square as a photo backdrop. Not only were peaceful demonstrators tear-gassed, clergy were chased away from the church, which was turned into a political prop without the permission of its pastor or bishop.

The crassness of this photo-op was transparent to all but the president, who is used to being blessed by obsequious clerics in the Oval Office. If this were done in China, it would be denounced by the U.S. State Department as a violation of human rights and religious freedom.

Meanwhile, many of the demonstrators who had been pushed aside were responding to the prophetic call of their religious leaders. Racism was denounced as a sin, and police violence condemned as an assault on the life and human dignity of Gods children. This prophetic voice was heard especially from black clergy, but white clergy and white believers also responded to the call.

Religion and politics have been locked in relationship since the dawn of humanity. Sometimes that relationship is healthy and sometimes its exploitative. Working together in a positive way, the two forces have created community and fostered the common good. With the blessing of the gods, political leaders could rule without brute force. With the help of political leaders, great temples and works of art were created that enriched the religious and cultural life of the community.

Conflict between the religious and political leaders could also be healthy. Before there were elections, independent courts and the rule of law, religion often provided the only check on political power. There was a higher law than the law of the king, and the prophet could challenge the despot with the voice of God.

On the other hand, rulers sometimes became the only ones powerful enough to reform religious institutions that had become corrupt.

Over the course of history, prophets and reformers have only succeeded when the people supported them.

But when religion and politics were in an incestuous relationship, religion turned rulers into gods and political leaders corrupted religious leaders with wealth and gave them power to impose religious beliefs on unbelievers. Temples and churches became not houses of God but monuments to clerical power and privilege.

The history of the United States has seen these themes play out. Political and religious leaders supported slavery and racism in an incestuous relationship where religious institutions even owned slaves. On U.S. soil, religion too often became part of the establishment and turned against new immigrants, whether Catholic or Muslim, Irish or Chinese.

Too often religion stood on the side of the status quo against workers, blacks, women, gays and social reformers. It too frequently used its political influence to protect criminal clergy and hush up scandals. It tried to impose its views about human behavior long after it had lost the support of the public.

But religion in America also had a prophetic voice, whether it was Catholic clergy defending Irish immigrants against the WASP establishment or black clergy leading the civil rights movement against racism.

Today, there are prophetic voices on almost every issue, sometimes on both sides. There are pro-life prophets and feminist prophets. How can we judge true prophets from false prophets?

Here are four ways to test a prophet:

1. Follow the money. No prophet in the Scriptures was ever rich. What did you go out to the desert to see? asks Jesus about John the Baptist in Lukes Gospel. Someone dressed in fine garments? Those who dress luxuriously and live sumptuously are found in royal palaces. A true prophet does not get rich speaking for God.

2. Who are the prophets friends? A true prophet is friends with the poor and the powerless. A false prophet keeps company with the rich and powerful. Jesus was criticized for keeping company with tax collectors and sinners. Put no trust in princes, says the psalmist in Psalm 146. Prophets should not get in bed with politicians.

3. For whom does the prophet speak? The job of the prophet is to comfort the afflicted and afflict the comfortable. False prophets tell their congregations what they want to hear. We can see some clergy fawning over political leaders as others challenge them to protect the marginalized and serve the common good. A prophet who ignores the sins of his friends is a prophet for a party, not for God.

4. How does he speak? The words of a prophet can ring with righteous anger but not with hate. The prophet must condemn exploitation but have compassion for sinners. If there is no love in the prophets voice, then he does not speak with the voice of God. A true prophet speaks only after listening and praying.

Religion can be a political prop or a prophetic voice. History should teach religious leaders not to get in bed with political leaders. Religious and political leaders can work together for the common good, but they should be enriching the community, not each other. A prophet can speak courageously about issues, but when he starts endorsing political parties and candidates, he is no longer speaking for God.

Devoted to Salivary Bioscience: International Journal of Behavioral Medicine Publishes First Special Issue Focused on Saliva-Based Research – PR Web

This issue of IJBM illustrates the innovative use of salivary bioscience to answer important behavioral medicine questions.

CARLSBAD, Calif. (PRWEB) June 15, 2020

For researchers in biobehavioral science, Salimetrics has been a reliable partner for over 25 years, providing needed support to navigate research opportunities in the multidisciplinary field of Salivary Bioscience. Utilizing knowledge gained from saliva and oral fluids, Salimetrics continues to facilitate new milestones through an expanding line of high-quality collection devices and assays. Recently, the field has passed several milestones, including saliva-based assays for COVID-19, the release of a foundational reference guide, Salivary Bioscience Foundations of Interdisciplinary Saliva Research and Applications, and the first special issue of an international journal devoted to Salivary Bisocience from the IJBM.

The International Journal of Behavioral Medicine (IJBM) is the official scientific journal of the International Society for Behavioral Medicine (ISBM) which aims to present the best theoretically driven, evidence-based work in the field of behavioral medicine from around the globe. The recently published IJBM Special Issue emphasizes saliva-based research utilizing varied research designs (i.e., experimental, longitudinal, dyadic), incorporating a broad array of salivary analytes, and investigating the influence of psychological and social factors on human health. This issue of IJBM illustrates the innovative use of salivary bioscience to answer important behavioral medicine questions, says Michael Hoyt, Ph.D., of the Population Health and Disease Prevention and the Chao Family Comprehensive Cancer Center, University of California, Irvine and article contributor. The interdisciplinary nature of behavioral medicine has expanded and so has its basic scientific and clinical practice missions. Its distinguished history in understanding behavioral influences on the onset, prevention, and management of disease and on the promotion of well-being and health points the way toward a future of continued innovation and discovery.

The special issue also features an overview of the use of salivary measures in behavioral medicine with original salivary bioscience studies, reviews of two prominent salivary markers (estradiol and alpha-amylase), and guidance on the physiometrics of salivary data. Several of the studies, supported by Salimetrics tools, were selected as representative of expanding critical mass in behavioral medicine. Specific highlights include:

Hoyt et al., Salivary Bioscience and the Future of Behavioral Medicine. This article introduces Salivary Bioscience in Behavioral Medicine and chronicles the overarching aims by translating saliva specimen data to identify mechanisms, decode moderating processes that turn adversity into risk, and verify the impact of clinical intervention.

Segerstrom et al., Physiometrics in Salivary Bioscience. This article highlights how studies depend on accurate estimation in statistical models through sample size but also, critically, reliability of the measure itself, and explores which study designs call for stable and generalizable measures.

Riis et al., Long-Term Associations Between Prenatal Maternal Cortisol and Child Neuroendocrine-Immune Regulation. This study investigates the relationship of prenatal factors and neuroendocrine-immune dynamics over time. The findings suggest prenatal maternal HPA activity moderates child neuroendocrine-immune functioning.

Eiden et al., Prenatal Tobacco & Cannabis Exposure: Associations With Cortisol Reactivity in Early School Age Children. This study lends insight into the potential impact of prenatal tobacco and cannabis exposure and physiological stress responses in later development. Results suggest that prenatal polysubstance exposure is associated with greater risk for lower cortisol response in children.

As Salivary Bioscience continues to expand into new disciplines, Salimetrics is well positioned to provide new, high-quality tools that further advance the field. Weve been collaborating with infectious disease researchers for over five years and began our infectious disease initiative about one year ago. This shift in focus made it possible for Salimetrics to have the needed salivary bioscience tools for researchers to monitor inflammation and infectious diseases using oral fluids, says Supriya Gaitonde, Ph.D., Salimetrics Senior Applications Scientist. Who is on your research team matters, and Salimetrics has acquired the unique knowledge to get the science right. Our knowledge serves the scientific community, and we give researchers the most effective tools to complete their study.

Researchers can Contact Salimetrics for more information or review the International Journal for Behavioral Medicine Special Issue on the Springer Website. For more detailed information and examples of the application of salivary bioscience tools in a diverse range of disciplines, readers can refer to; Salivary Bioscience Foundations of Interdisciplinary Saliva Research and Applications.

Kashmir’s least affected district has higher sero-prevalence of COVID19 than all-India average: Survey – Greater Kashmir

A survey has shown higher than national average sero-prevalence of COVID19 in Kashmirs least affected district, Pulwama, raising questions about the prevalence of the viral infection in other districts here.

A sero-prevalence survey carried out in May in district Pulwama by Government Medical College (GMC) Srinagar on behalf of Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has shown some surprising results. As per department of social and preventive medicine of GMC Srinagar, that carried out the survey, the sero-prevalence of COVID19 was 2 percent in Pulwama. ICMR has said that in non-containment zones, and low prevalence districts, of which Pulwama was a part when the study started, the prevalence was 0.73 percent.

Sero-prevalence involves testing for IgG levels in an individuals blood, and tells whether they have been infected in the recent past with SARS CoV-2. It also helps in gauging the degree of protection they have achieved in terms of antibody response to the virus. The ICMR nationwide study covered 83 districts and hotspots with 26400 population covered.

Dr Saleem Khan, head department of social and preventive medicine at GMC Srinagar said that the results obtained from testing in Pulwama were suggestive of the prevalence of COVID19 in a particular community at a point dating back to two weeks prior to sampling. The samples we took on 28 May would tell us how many people were infected, among those we tested, two weeks prior, he said.

Pulwama was among the lowest prevalence districts of Kashmir around the time of the survey and had been selected based on this. Dr Khan said similar surveys in other districts and other populations could help in understanding the spread of infection.

Dr Khan said sero-prevalence was a measure of bodys immune response to COVID19 and it could also help in gauging whether antibodies provided some kind of protection against future infections.

He said sero-prevalence of COVID19 in healthcare professionals project started on Sunday. We will be testing around 3000 samples of healthcare professionals in Srinagar district as a collaborative research project by Departments of Community Medicine and Biochemistry.

We shall be testing doctors, nursing paramedic, support staff of various Associated Hospitals of GMC Srinagar and various hospitals and health centers of Directorate of Health Services under CMO Srinagar, he said.

A handout by the department said the blood samples would be collected and processed by Department of Biochemistry GMC Srinagar through ARCHITECT immunoassay analyzer which has been shown to have 100 percent sensitivity and specificity after 17 days of SARS CoV-2 exposure and clinical symptoms.

In addition, a sero-prevalence study in general population was also in pipeline.

Principal GMC Srinagar, Prof Samia Rashid said the sero-prevalence was an important measurement and the surveys will help in understanding the spread of COVID19 better. Healthcare professionals are a high risk group and we are trying to test as many of them to safeguard lives, she said.

What Does Virtual Learning Mean For The Future Of Higher Education? – Forbes

Michael P. Toothman, 15 years in higher education.

As an educator for U.C. Riverside, Michael P. Toothman, PMP, has worked in higher education for the past 15 years.

In that time, he's developed more than 4,000 project managers from 1,000 companies, and 40 countries and led global collaborations for multi-cultural teams andwon awardsin the process.

But for Toothman, and for the rest of the States, his world has turned on a dime in the advent of COVID.

As U.C. Riverside had already begun moving several courses online, the transition was somewhat underway before California, and national mandates in mid-March required all education to jump online and most communities to shelter in place.

Toothman seemingly dodged a bullet in March when one of his students, who'd just returned from China, abruptly cancelled a brunch appointment last minute as she was not feeling well.

Sure enough, she was diagnosed with COVID, and immediately hospitalized, and fortunately has survived.Regardless of the pandemic, Toothman sees the future of higher education and professional training believes education is forever changedespecially at the college level. He also states many schools are running a hybrid teaching model in the fall, and many universities are moving entirely online.

As a former Air Force Staff Sergeant, Toothman knows he's at a higher risk. Already isolated, he put his time toward working on an in-depth experiment regarding how to make online education work well.

As we might have anticipated, the first iteration of online-only education was not good.

Toothman said, "I experienced some level of student dissatisfaction, at first, as many students were expecting the dynamic interaction of a live course. Additionally, some had poor experiences with online courses in the past and this drove their inherent dislike for online learning. It was vital that I set the tone early. To keep students engaged, an instructor must be visible and active, and exhibit care, empathy, and trust for students.

My students were joining my online class discussions from all over the world; many balancing the competing demands of newly remote positions, homeschooling, and self-care. So, it was vital that I create a learning environment which added real value to their lives.

Toothman realized he had two choices to make when it comes to teaching today.

Here's what he stated:

With time on his hands, he's chosen the latter.

Knowing it would be most difficult to replace the energy of the live interactions with instructors and other students, Toothman turned his attention to what an online platform could provide that other mediums can't. He realized the medium allows room for students to shape their own adventures in ways that a live and static lesson plan can't provide.

For example, in teaching courses on Project Management, Toothman can build in video resources on the aspects that might interest students mostsuch as Future Proof Technologies, Soft Skills, or Critical Thinking. If students are most interested in A.I., robotics, and data science, they can build a pathway to lead them to additional resources in those channelssimilar to a choose your own adventure scenario. He is currently working on integrating Flipboard magazines to dynamically curate course content.

All participants complete the same core work to meet and demonstrate the required capabilities. Still, the full shape and extent of the adventure can be their own to decide, with the addition of vibrant and visual supplements that can capture and hold their attention.

Likewise, Toothman has learned and maximized the ways to replicate the robustness of face to face discussions online through tools like Zoom, although it has made for a certain amount of personal sacrifice.

Toothman said, "Imagine that 20% of your enrollment is outside of the United States. They didn't plan to attend remotely; they enrolled to attend live, but due to the pandemic restrictions, the university has sent many students back home."

He has also made the intrepid choice to hold live Zoom sessions for for international students. He knows that most instructors will not do this, and it may not be a workable solution forever. Still, as the world adjusts, it is vital to ensure first and foremost that students are met with the most exceptional experience possible as they navigate the move to learning online.

You can learn more from Toothman in a recent T.V. interview with C.G.T.N.here.

An organization led by a scientist in visualization and simulation, Bryan Brandenburg has similarly made a pivot in prioritization of the physiology visualization platform he's brought forward in his newest company,Zenerchi L.L.C.

Brandenburg's visuals from previous organizations D.A.S. 3D and Zygote Media Group, continue to populate medical journals and press.

His new company, Zenerchi L.L.C., is taking the technology further through integration with V.R. and A.I. to create visualizations so distinct participants can view the human heart or lungs with detail that can take them down to the level of atoms and quarks.

The technology touches sectors including health, wellness, medical education, and, interestingly, edutainment with the ability to transition museum and event realms into full immersion experiences.

Online learning about the medical field.

This strategy can make those avenues of education self-funded while also bringing in new streams of revenue.Listening to the younger populace has shown increasingly less interest in traditional museums.Additionally, the technology holds high appeal for online education.

Launched in 2019, Zenerchi L.L.C. has successfully achieved early funding, but in Q1 enacted a pivot of its priorities in the realm of COVID.

They went with online education as their first commercially available product. This choice was partly due to the need to provide deep visualization and a more profound education on the pandemic issue.

To that end, the company partnered with Carrus, a leading provider of online healthcare training and professional development, to take online medical education to a higher level with new online courses that use the Zenerchi physiology simulation and visualization platform.

"We wanted to make this technology available at the highest level and to the largest audience possible," Brandenburg said, as to the decision to approach online learning first.

Zenerchi will shortly release a library of stock images and AR/VR simulations of human physiology under the trade name S.T.E.A.M. for use by educators and developers. This format ensures readers get what they need on the fly and to surmount the barriers of storage and internet bandwidth. These will be vital steps in the future of learning.

The shift to virtual learning has significant implications for the future of education.

Arecent articleby researchersVijay GovindarajanandAnup Srivastavafor Harvard Business Review underscores the experiences of Toothman and Brandenburg.

Their current experiments indicate the traditional model of a four-year face-to-face college education can no longer rest on its laurels.

A variety of factors, most notably, the continuously increasing cost of tuition, already makes higher education out of reach for most students and families. It makes the post-secondary education market ripe for change.

Day by day, we see further evidence that the pandemic crisis may force this change in higher education.

The ways we respond and react to the need for better methods of virtual learning will have a significant impact on whether and how online education develops as an opportunity for the future.

It may change the impact of education on our economy at large, and its viability and availability to a broader set of participants. Likewise, the time and geographic flexibility of online learning may serve to make it available to a more comprehensive set of participants.

As Govindarajan and Srivastava note, some politicians are pressing or have promised the concept of a free college education but what if the newest developments prove that a college education doesn't have to bankrupt a person? The implications are tremendous for all.

Govindarajan and Srivastava suggested, "After the crisis subsides, is it best for all students to return to the classroom, and continue the status quo, or will we have found a better alternative?"

Toothman is excited to continue his quest to forge forward in all of these developments. In the interim, he continues to teach his courses.

‘The King of Staten Island’ | Anatomy of a Scene – The New York Times

Hi, Im Judd Apatow. And Im the director and co-writer of The King of Staten Island. This is a scene from early in The King of Staten Island. Thats Maude Apatow, who is playing Petes sister Claire. And in this scene, she is about to leave for college the next day. And shes giving her brother a set of paints to encourage him to pursue his tattooing dream more aggressively. I know youre into art, so I thought you could expand your horizons while Im gone. You got a gift receipt for this? But its also a guilt gift, because shes leaving and on some level, abandoning him. So under the guise of being nice, she is bee-lining for the door. Be nice to mom, O.K.? Dont give her a hard time. She deserves a break. I always give her a break. When am I going to get my break? Like What are you talking about? All anyone ever does is worry about you. In this conversation, Petes character is really on to her. They know each other so well, and he knows this as a guilt gift. He knows shes trying to get away from him. And hes also guilty and insecure that hes made her childhood difficult, because hes taken up so much air in the room from all of his problems. What are you going to do? Are you going to get a job? Or are you going to leave the house? I dont know. Im going to open that tattoo restaurant. No, like, for real. I am being real. Its never been done before. I looked it up. I googled it. Its never been done, not even as a joke. Because no one wants to go to a restaurant and watch people get tattooed while they eat. Its gross. Its the best idea ever. Ruby Tat-Tuesdays, where everyones welcome chicken and tattoos. What I like about this scene is its very real. Its very tense. And yet, both the actor and the actress find a way to be really funny in showing how their relationship melts down. In the scene, they talk about how Scott thinks it was worse for him, because he got to know their dad. And its easier for her, because she was too young to have gotten to know him when he died. Thats something that Pete Davidson talked about that, thats something that he debates with his sister. Who had it worse? And in a way, the scene is almost an apology to his real-life sister for not acknowledging how bad her pain was at times. We shot this scene over an entire day. We had rehearsed it a lot and done a lot of improvisations. One of the reasons why I wanted Maude to do it is shes very alive and very present, and so is Pete. And I knew you would feel it in her eyes every moment that she loves him, but also, shes so guilty about leaving the house.
